“We’re probably unlikely to go and grab the big fish that’s worth the $1.2 or $1.5 million a year because we think that should be shared around a greater depth of the playing list,” Clarkson said.

“That’s the philosophy and rationale that we’ve got at our club but it’s not shared by every club in the competition.”

Which players are actually worth 1.2 to 1.5 million?

Realistically, Clarko is saying we're "unlikely" to get Dusty. That is all. Maybe Kelly.
We could still in the running for Rocky, Lever, Whitfield and a host of others.

Jackson Trengove for me. Comes in to play a role at CHB with the ability to play other positions.
Don't think he would be commanding huge money which fits our trading/free agent philosophy.

True, but how do we know that Dusty will attract over $1.2? His current contract is reportedly significantly less than this. At the start of this season reports were swirling that Richmond were going to offer him a "significant, long term contract worth close to $800k". Sure the new agreement has increased all wages, but a $400k pa increase is pretty top end I would have thought.

Compare him to someone like Fyfe who by all reports was already on close to a million and has just re-signed on for around $1.2 per season over 6 years.

I would have thought that he will be offered a few pretty good deals that will all be around the same ball park of maybe $6.6 / 7 million over 6 years and it will be his call where he wants to play, can't see Richmond matching if he decides to go.

But I agree with others, I would rather see a couple of potential A graders added or smaller fish rather than going bust with one huge fish. We didn't pay huge money to retain Buddy, who we developed and would have probably been more accepted by the playing group, why would we do it for someone who is an outsider?

I read A lot of the reported 20% rise in player payments is taken up by large increases in first and second year deals and the minimum salary etc.

The actually average extra cap available to spend is closer to 13-14%.

Might be a good idea to let teams blow their loads this year and pick up the pieces in the next couple of years.

Well I don't think we are so far off the pace I worded that poorly, what I meant to say if we landed a big fish it could jump us from 12th-13th to top 4... Take Martin or Dangerfield out of Geelong and Richmond and were would they finish ?
Or Tom Mitchell out of Hawthorn... we'd be clear bottom!

There is "big fish" like martin/buddy and there are "potential/established A graders" like rockliff/gibson (back in the day). Thats what he meant I believe.

8-9 A graders with some elite talent rather than highly elite talent and a big drop off.

Pointless recruit imo.

He will be 30 in 2020. I hope we give him a miss.

I don't actually think you can create a list that regularly challenges if you pay anyone mega salaries of $1.2m +.

Perhaps Sydney as their COLA has morphed into half their list getting ambassadorial payments but for the rest playing on an even playing field.

When we refused to match on Buddy, clearly the 9 years made it impossible but if they'd offered the same average annual pay at say 4 years I still think we'd have let him go.

I think Freo have been unwise and no doubt a few others will follow. The Dangerfield trade seemed to make a lot more sense alround. What's he on $800-900k? That's workable then you can pay the other champs what they're worth relatively.

If teams start paying FA stars huge amounts and payments are increasing for draftees etc then for those clubs relatively speaking there will be less money for decent- above average players, that will create opportunities and I would imagine there would be none better than us at picking on those carcasses.

If we work our way back to challenging the Lake and Frawley opportunities will then come. Two different situations but both were looking for trophies.

I'm sure a strategic view was put in place as soon as FA came in, and really it can only either be clear cap space to attract big fish or let others do so knowing that it will create trading opportunities, I mean in a way getting TOM for unders was because he was squeezed by the Buddy/ Tippet dream pairing, eggs in one basket strategy. There will be more like that. Mick Malthouse had it right, the Ox is slow but the earth is patient.
