My 2 cents (for what they are worth).
Play the kids get as much game time into them as we can.
now I know this one will get some kickback by people but, finish last convince hooper/whitfeild to come to us then do the best possible deal with GWS having the PSD as back up.
Get dusty as RFA and Trengrove from Port as RFA, I would also see about getting the other trengrove over from the Dee's as well

If we got that first PSD selection I'd be saying to them that there's an extra bit of salary in it for you to come that way rather than trade. Draft picks are gold to us right now.

Graham Wright is not logging in here to get ideas
So I've been secretly giving myself credit for building a 3x Premiership List for nothing!? o_O

Anyway speaking of trading, I wonder how long we should continue to carry all of Roughead, Gunston, Sicily, O'Brien, Burton, Vickery & Schoenmakers on the list. I regard them all as natural tall forwards and its obvious how little success we've had turning them into KPDs who are desperately needed.

Without Hodge, Burgoyne & Gibson the entire backline will be desperately lacking in class. Considering we have a weak midfield and three of the best small forwards in the league, the list is looking horribly imbalanced towards forwards who aren't scoring anyway because the structure in other parts of the ground is collapsing. Maybe it'll be time to cash in some of our surplus talent so that Graham Wright can finally go to the draft with a pick below 88 for a change.

TBH after a bit of thinking Im starting to lean towards AFL 360 being on the mark.....
getting Fyfe or Dusty now seems to smell of Carlton/Judd type of pick up where you think you're close but realistically you're not.
Neither of them will be the difference between a flag or not with our current list....

We need to get back into the drafts and build a base of 5-8 solid 10+ year blokes just like we did in 04/05 around S Mitchell and Hodge.... except this time we have T Mitchell and O'Meara to build around. Things are positive, but we cant teeter and go in half baked..... we need to really go for it....
Based on what I've seen this year I tend to agree. Not only because numerous holes have appeared, but also because if we're back in contention in 2-3 years we'll be competing with GWS & the Doggies for flags. Its going to take a very strong team to defeat them because scarily they both have plenty of scope for improvement.

I can't see how adding one elite mid, a ruckman, a KPD and a winger would transform our list into one capable of toppling GWS with Hodge, Burgoyne & Gibson all gone and Roughy, Birchall & Poppy's output diminished by that stage. I'm starting to think we need to construct another young core to build around, which Clarko is already doing by picking up Mitchell & JOM. Hopefully we'll continue targeting players in that age range through trading & FA, but will also need to at least build some depth via the draft.

Clarko hasn't been scared to trade 1st & 2nd rounders to recruit the likes of Hale, Lake, Burgoyne Gunston and co. but I'm not convinced a Premiership list can be built without snagging multiple gems from the draft. Does he believe we have enough young-ish talent already that we can afford to be conservative by trading 1st & 2nd rounders in future years for players like Mitchell, Trengove and such? On one hand its a solid strategy for pushing back up the ladder faster but no club is going to trade a 'franchise player' as the yanks call them like Bontempelli unless they have no choice, which begs the question where our next Hodge, Sammy & Roughy will come from.

I would say to this, it's not how Clarko thinks.

He's stated very clearly, for years and years, his game plan to win premierships revolves around finishing Top 4, at which point a new season begins and you've given yourself a chance.
Who's playing hotter as it starts, who has injuries, who can be inspired the most, even who runs into an opponent having a bad day.

There were no guarantees when we won any of our premierships that we were so clearly better it was a lay down misere we'd be victorious.

I'd be more than happy for him to rebuild us as a top 4 team, and see what we can get done each year to add cups.
Creating a super team ala GWS in terms of top young draft talent isn't happening.
So the other route is getting the most out of your draft, trading and free agency.

Get good players in, that's how I see it.
Hope for magic dust to be sprinkled across us like our trove of Buddy, Hodge, Sammy, Jarryd and Lewis and you could be left looking at rebuild after rebuild every 3-5 years should your draft picks not shape up.

Yes, our 'draft forwards then try to turn them into defenders' strategy has not been a great success. Trent CROAD is the only success.
It has possibly ruined the career of Shoe. Hopefully Sicily can be salvaged.
Until we replace B Lake with a strong defencer, we will not be a contender.
