I wanted to bump this comment to be clear that we have trade currency & we should use it!
I would also like to add Gunston to the list...
We need some serious help in list regeneration for the next premiership & I don't think any of he above can't be ruled out to get into the draft or target young players from other clubs.
There is no hiding from the fact that we've gone over the cliff!
Trade talk should be priority! Who can we offload to where & where are the kids to target.
Forget the big fish!
We need a wide net not a hook...

I wrote in another thread that I'd be happy to trade out>26 year olds for draft picks. Even better if we can turn a 26 year old Bruest into a 20 year old Hopper scenario. Need as many blokes as possible to be peaking at the same time as TOM, JOM and Burton, which means guys <23.

That's not to say I'd knock back Dusty as a free agent because he costs only cap space, which we have lots of for the next few years.

Can't say I'm sold on Hopper tbh. Sure he's built like a beast but I've been to the Giants games over the last couple of years and have found myself thinking that his disposal and decision making have been iffy. Could be an experience issue, but still don't think I'd be paying too much for him.

So he's a bigger Langford? No thanks.

How are we going to fill the salary cap unless we take 2 or 3 free agents? We have no draft picks to trade in young stars and we will be retiring 2 or 3 veterans.

It's easy to look to the current state of the side and say that it'll be the undoing of any proposals to free agents, but this overlooks 2 key points.

1. Timing of the initial contact to any potential players.
2. Ego.

List Managers are looking at possible list movement 2,3 and 4 years in advance, and are contacting player managers 2-3 years out from the end of current contracts to get a feel for where players are at. They're also looking at what or who will be dropping off our list in those same moments.

Lynch from the Suns for example, we spoke to more than 12 months ago. He knew then that when he was to come out of contract in two years time, we would be very interested in knowing what his next movement was.
We are in contact with multiple players, years out from the end of their contracts. I would assume most teams are.

Now, when it come to 'big fish' or established AFL players you're not selling them a dream of riding on the coat-tails to success on the back of champion players, you're telling them that they are the missing piece. They are the future. That they can get more out of themselves in your system. You're feeding their ego and telling them that they are going to have the opportunity to have a big say in the future of the club.

When Clarkson puts forward a case to Pittard(for example), he's looking him in the eye and telling him something "Your run and carry from the back half, is the exact thing we are missing at the moment. Your skillset would benefit our half forwards to a point where we believe we'd be a 4-5 goal better side."
He's not talking about former glory, or Hodge, Burgoyne, Gibson or any player on the decline, he's talking about the sort of style he wants to play, and he is telling this player just how he fits in to the plan going forward.

Look at guys like Trealoar, Prestia, Dixon, Varcoe, Dangerfield, Bennell, Brad Hill....so many players leaving to go to poorer sides, because its either their home state, or because they think that they can be the missing piece of the puzzle.

I am strong in my belief that players who we've been talking to for 24 months and longer are well aware that they're going to be part of the transition, and I don't buy the idea that players will sit back and say "Nah, not going to Hawthorn, Hodge and Gibson are cooked....".

Can't see Fyfe moving to St. Kilda without the Saints giving up the first round pick we traded to them.

There's no way Freo haven't prepared for this and built up a war chest in order to match any offer and force a trade (if the rumour is true).

For sure , assuming all this is true, they will get full value for Fyfe - ie 2 x top 10 picks possibly

Fyfe is a gun no doubt, but the Saints need players who are good by foot. They already have the midfield grunt and ball winners, but no elite users. Fyfe is not that type of player.
Isn't that what we need too? They say Saints & Pittard... we need a mid with reasonable foot skills, but can win the ball & bring others into the game or be a threat also.

Not according to St Kilda fans...

If Fyfe says he wants to come to your footy club you make it happen.

With 2 firsties this year + future picks they are beautifully placed.

Their list build has been very good since Bains started...

we need both. Saints need a good ball user.

Fyfe is just a gun. You'd do anything to get him. Any club would. They need an elite user too. Wells/Dal Santo/Kelly type
