Yes but he wasn't recruited to play seconds was he? We paid on potential not with 20/20 foresight.
So the reality is he's overpaid, on 500 K a year and can't get a game ahead of Tim O Brien lol. Even if he was playing that support Ruck role/ Forward he's still not worth 500k. I assume if you think Vickery is worth 500 k, you must also think Tippett is worth 800 K ?

I'm not going to judge Vickery yet - based on other recruits who started slowly and ended up contributing a huge deal (Gibson, Hale, Burgoyne). Hell we made Matt Spangher a premiership player.

Based on where we were at last year without Ceglar injured, McEvoy looking a bit cooked and Roughy's comeback nowhere near a guarantee (and most expecting another 6-12 months out) he was an important signing. In the modern game, $500k isn't crazy money - so an experienced forward who could also pinch hit in the rock was probably worth exactly that amount based on where we were at in October.

Recruiting AVERAGE MEDIOCRE FREE AGENTS is recipe for mediocrity. Sam Reid fits smack bang in the middle of this lot

Look on the bright side. We only have big Ty for 2 more years while the Pies put Mayne on a 4 year deal from memory.

In all seriousness would love big Ty to find something and lift himself and become a good contributor each week for us.

I would say we are not the only Victorian club with a war chest and others are in a much better position listwise than we are.
Are they ?!!
Are they really !!?
Every cloud has a silver linning and I'd suggest ours is looking at us in the eye ...

We Finnish last and we and ANY FA who wants to join us hold the ace in the deck . PSD and the number one spot could /would be our best friend this year ....like last year when GC threatened to push JOM to it with the threat of the Bombers swooping in its time WE play hard ball !!!

Yeah I'd rather us not finish last though. After the Luke Ball incident no player will ever walk for free again either - so the PSD number one pick is useless.

finishing last would be a disaster! cue wooden spoon memes!
Interesting , so for the sake of a little bit of shit from the footy community ( which would last 6 mths tops ) you both would rather Finnish let's say .....9-14 ?
Sorry I just don't get that , when the whistle blows to end the season 2nd turns in to last , and last becomes the leader of the pack , that is fact .
I for one will cope whatever comes my way if it allows our club to take control of this current situation .

Yes, I would rather finish 9-14 and look halfway able to compete to lure potential free agents and out of contract players than finish stone cold last with our first round pick being used by St Kilda. The PSD draft pick is absolutely worthless - players who are out of contract get traded. Clubs aren't stupid enough to be the Saints with Ball and cut off their nose to spite their face. Look at the last 4-5 offseasons and you'll see that the PSD is irrelevant these days. The last 2-3 didn't even happen because clubs went straight to the rookie draft because of the delisted free agent period effectively replacing it.

Sorry, but finishing last for us this year has ZERO silver lining or benefit.

Tanking to give another team on the rise the no. 1 pick just doesn't seem right to me
Especially when your best bargaining chip is the PSD, which has become virtually useless nowdays!

Even in our crap years, we refused to tank, I doubt the club and Clarko would want to go the Melbourne route. As you quite rightly point out as well, why tank if we are not going to directly benefit from it?

mate, 3 time Premiership players will have that spoon hanging off their neck, I for one don't believe any good to very good players will fall through to the PSD, and am hoping our club doesn't bank on something as flimsy as that. their is a certain type of pride that comes with been the best for a long time, finishing 12-15 is okay imo, its not as if there are first round picks at the end of it.
