Not sure its a big fish but Aliir is still out of the side in Sydney and seems on the outer. He has a huge amount of talent and can be one of the best key defenders in the comp in the next few years, I would go after him
Not sure about as a KPD but he would make a nice Birchall replacement. Not like for like exactly but still offers a bit on the rebound. Sydney won't let him go easily even with their apparent salary cap issues.

Young player dropped for a minor disciplinary issue, the team wins its first game and he doesn't get recalled straight away? I'd say at this stage, that hardly qualifies as being 'on the outer'.

Anyway, Aliir is hypothetical - no way we are getting him.

Yep, agree with all that but we are going to have to be awfully creative in the draft/trade period in the coming years. We don't come into the draft until the second round this season - unless we trade a first rounder in - and I think getting a star may be out of reach. Why can't we target younger talent who might be homesick or not getting an opportunity an opportunity at their current club? We turned Jack Gunston into a star, no reason why it couldn't happen again rather than getting in a Fyfe, Martin or Rockliff.

Want to spend the money? Give the blokes who deserve it a pay rise. Get Burton on a long-term contract ASAP. If Hardwick and TOB keep going the way they then they'll deserve a rise in pay.

This year's draft/trade period will set us up for the next few years. Chucking everything at a Fyfe or Martin, coupled with retirements of, potentially, Hodge and Burgoyne plus others will set us even further back.
While I agree with you on Fyfe & Martin (not saying no to either by the way!) I think Rockliff could be a great asset to us if the price is right.
He is a tough hard footballer who gets the ball alot. He would provide ball winning ability, which by itself is enough to have him in the team, but he would also provide some 'protection' for the younger mids.
I'm not saying he should go around wacking blokes, but the physical presence to take some of the heat off Mitchell & JOM (Sheils, Langers etc) would be well worth it.
Yes will be 29, but 3 years + makes him a good 'money ball' option to me.

What I like about Rockcliff is that I think that if Brisbane received a band 1 compo, I doubt that they would match.
So example $800k per year for 3 years sounds reasonable to me. Brings in that harder Sewell like body, while getting possessions and protecting the kids sounds good to me too.
With Dusty and Fyfe will be looking at close to 1.5m a season to negate Freo and Richmond from matching.

While not as polished as Dusty and Fyfe, Rocky is the cheaper, safer alternative. Means we can look at other missing pieces from other teams without compromising our current list.

The main stumbling block I see to getting Rockcliff is that he would want a long term contract ie min 3 years and the Hawks may baulk at offering that to a 29 year old.
However if he took a 2 year deal with an option of 3 that may get it over the line.
He is a good player but I would be looking for someone younger ie no more than 26.

He's 27. Turns 28 end of Feb 2018. 3 years with a trigger for 4th would be the minimum for a free agent of his calibre. If we weren't to offer at least that then there would be another club that would.

Mea Culpa. I should have checked his birthdate. A 3 year deal for a 28 year old is probably doable.

If the club can land Rockliff as a free agent, Shiels should go back to his old role as a genuine tagger rather then trying to play as that ball winning midfielder. Getting Rockliff may push someone like Langford back outside the best 22.

Hey Guys,

This mail is a couple of months old so things may have changed, but the #1 big fish on the Hawks list is Tom Lynch (GC).

No idea how you get it done without a first rounder so don't ask me, but that is who they are after. Perhaps it's even part of a plan to get him at the end of next year, I don't know.

Also another tidbit, Hawthorn was apparently the only club in Victoria that didn't enquire about Dion Prestia and it was entirely due to his kicking efficiency.
We've been into him for a few years. Watching on from afar. As we did with Jaeger.

Bushrangers, Kings,
While someone might reply to this with a Champion data stat to prove me wrong I worry that a midfield of Rockliff Mitchell Omeara Shiels and Langford is below par in regards to kicking the ball.

I think we need some outside class because Burgoyne is still our most influential player in our side at the moment. He hurts the opposition and that is what footy is about.....mark my words when I say we are going to miss this bloke more than any other player that has gone in the past couple of years.

Fyfe or Martin with a fit Jaeger gives us 2 A graders that can finish....

Tommy is a gun insider that we are going to love watching but will never be that classy finisher like Burgoyne that we will need to replace.

Why? Absolute pipe dream. Never going to happen for various reasons. I'll happily take Rockliff who is at least possibly gettable for us.
A Victorian kid, who is an absolute gun, playing in a shite side, coming into Free Agency in 2018.

That's no pipe dream. That's a definite target of interest.
