Very good selection and I was hoping he would fall another four spots. But alas not to be.
I think that Setterfield can play from day one.

doubt he does given North's depth but yeah, body wise and game wise I agree, such a solid unit already.

He pretty much picked himself tbh, I think I've got a bit of value here.

they wont let him go to another club. huge investment in him. also a type they want.

Agreed. Doubly so if Marchbank leaves. They've got Davis locking down one spot, but Buntine and Corr have been injured a lot and Patfull and Mohr aren't long term solutions. Himmelberg looks good and Finlayson has been playing down back in the reserves but there's a lot of question marks over every non-Davis option there.

Coming in, I probably would have agreed that Todd Marshall at #3 was maybe a bit high. Is he the third best player in the draft? But then I looked at it properly, and he arguably is - especially when it's Fremantle who have the pick. It's such an even spread, even McCluggage isn't on another level to Marshall.

If SPS was available, I probably would have picked him. And I expect Fremantle would do the same, he'd fill so many holes in the midfield. But the real question would be do they overlook Tim English or not. I suspect not, even though I don't agree.

I was deciding between Todd Marshall and Josh Rotham, so if anything I went the conventional route!

Well that would have rocked my boat!

Pick #13 Adelaide - Jonty Scharenberg Glenelg 186cm 80kg

Ok some may say boring and predictable which is fair enough but nutting it down, the crows will need a good inside mid once ST leaves. They have plenty of good young defenders now, a plethora of forward options but for mine the midfield needs more work. Scharenberg would be the best SA lad and just about best available overall at this point. No go home factor as well.

I've liked this lad for a long time now and if this is how it panned out on draft day for real I'd be pretty happy.

Jonty is a strong inside mid with some outside ability. He exhibits strength in the contest and plays a no fuss brand of footy that will stand up at AFL level. He reads the game very well, is composed and makes good decisions. Can rack up big numbers but not so much in 2016 where I feel his overall progress curve has flattened out a bit compared to his 2014 and 2015 where he was a fair way ahead of his peers of a similar age. Has played senior SANFL in 2015 and again this year. His carnival was solid without being spectacular and I feel he is just building his game slowly and steadily. He does have the ability to pull out Priddis like numbers with clearances and inside contested ball. Has no fear of congestion and does a lot of grunt work that many wouldn't see as he's not dashing and aggressive on the outside. Thus his pace is only average. But plenty of good inside mids fit that mould. Hands excellent, you can tell he's a natural with the hands. Kicking is sound but does miss targets

Great pick. Was my next selection. I love his ability to absorb a tackle and get hands free to release. He has Jordy Lewis ability.

Pick 5 - Carlton - Ben Ainsworth
POS: Small forward, Ht 179cm, Wt 74kg, DOB 10/2/98
From Gippsland Power/Vic Country

On the Carlton board we have the normal conversation about the desire for tall forwards. I then checked out the Hawthorn forward line structure.

Cicily, McEvoy, Pup
Rioli, Gunston , Bruest

?, McKay, Sumner
Ainsworth, Curnow, SOS

(While I do understand Adelaide/Geelong have a more traditional tall forward structure.)
I think Carlton have recently recruited, McKay, Curnow and SOS to fill some forward line roles. We're seriously lacking some small forwards at the moment.
Ainsworth has had a multitude of injuries this season and combine that with his four game suspension he was semi forgotten about. I think along the lines of SPS you did not get to see their true potential at the under 18's.
He one of the most explosive small forwards going around with a combination of strength of leap. While he is short, his leap and power cover his lack of height.
He is the kind of player that in 1 quarter may win you a game with a 4 goal burst, like he did in the VC v VM game.
I watched him move into the midfield for a short period of time and did not look out of place so I gave me hope that he will not be a pure forward.

I personally think he is close to the best kick into the forward 50 in this draft. His kicking into the forward line reminds me of Walters from Freo.
I think at worst he will be like Jamie Elliot from Collingwood and at best we may see someone like Paul Chapman.

He will need to work on his endurance (Just like Walters) and defensive efforts are not a strong point at the moment.
He has a hard edge and ever interview with him I've heard, he sounded like a seasoned veteran.

(I was close to selecting Andrew McGrath)
I can understand why you selected Ainsworth. The small forward slot is the only one we have that is totally vacant. And we NEED a class small forward. We cannot be a top team without at least one.
At this point I can't see Ainsworth in the midfield: he appears to be something like Eddie Betts athletically. That may change. Ainsworth is young and hasn't had a prosper pre-season yet.

I as understand why you didn't take a tall forward: we have a number. However, they are not ready yet and will take time and patience.
Already on our list are Harry McKay and Charlie Curnow. In 2017 Ben Silvagni will be eligible. (Yes, I am making assumptions, but he is already 4-5cm taller than Jack at 16 years of age.) We appear to have some interest in Patrick Kerr (although who knows how that will pan out). We have our 'established' forwards in Levi Casboult, Liam Jones and Kristian Jaksch (yes, calling them 'established' is something of a misnomer, but they are on our list and each is improving. Whether any of them ends up actually being a top quality key forward is another question for another time).
That looks like plenty.
They won't all click, but we should get a couple of that collection.
Then we have Jack Silvagni as a mid sized forward, with Everitt and Walker as backup (such as they are).

Small forwards? Sumner hasn't kicked 0.5 goals per game yet. Lamb is also not producing a lot of goals and neither of them gets many crumbing goals. Gallucci is a rookie and an injured one at that.
That leaves plenty of space for a young man with talent and X-Factor.

Mind you, I have also been impressed by Andrew McGrath. If he does not go top 10 I will be amazed. I love the way he approaches his football.

McGrath's game reminds me of 2 players when coming off Half Back. One former and one current.

The former is Campbell Brown - a bustling, enthusiastic, high energy player when coming off Half Back. On the shortish side but has the demeanour and carries himself like a bigger player. Plays with strength above his height. Good overhead mark. Sometimes his bustle and high energy makes it feel like he is going too fast for his kick to be accurate or reliable sometimes.

The current is Sam Docherty - who has much the same qualities as Brown, but an improved version and the added on/off field leadership traits that Campbell probably lacked.

Docherty was a Pick 12 and has probably turned out optimally for a Pick 12 Half Back.

I feel McGrath would need to turn out optimally to be a Top 10 Pick.

In saying that, i do have him around 8 - 12 on my scribblings because he has those added leadership traits..

The player Ainsworth reminds me of is Robbie Grey. Like Grey I see him developing into a player who can spend plenty of time in the midfield. He already looks class when he is in there and I have no doubt that he can excel in there if given minutes.

Pick # 14 . West Coast.

Joshua Rotham . 192 cm 79 kg. Defender / Utility . West Perth.

This was not an easy pick as I could have gone one of several ways.

As far as "needs go" West Coast need some more quality inside midfielders to bolster their crappy C grade midfield. There were four mids that I would have liked and valved at this pick, but no surprise they are now all off the board. I could have slightly reached for a mid but I don't see a lot of difference in the quality of mids still on the board and available for this pick than several options that I believe will still be there with subsequent picks.

So I went best player available.

SPP was a consideration as he does bring some traits that are needed but Rotham is IMO the best player left on the board.

He has played unsexy roles in unsexy positions in the last two championships that have been team orientated but haven't allowed him to display his best attributes to the max.
Rotham has very good pace and in particular his closing speed is up there with the very best of his cohort. But here is the point of difference for me Rotham just doesn't miss targets by foot , so when foot skills are Royalty then Rotham is King.
I have watched him over the last two years and he is a tantalising athletic prospect who's skill set will eventually see him play up the ground, most probably on a wing. Rotham generates good separation with his run and carry and then his delivery is pure class.
I recall how a lot of draft commentary put the mock on Bontempelli as only a tall half back flanker and dismissed the notion that he could also play in the midfield..... there is a bit of the same negative mind set by some on Rotham also.

Rotham from all the information I have heard and gathered, indicates that he is a very coachable and a smart young kid who's attention to detail in his own preparation to his training and his game is second to none. All Clubs love this attribute and mark kids high if they tick this box. He also has good leadership qualities.

He has a great leap and plays a touch taller than his 192, however he will not be a genuine KPP, but as a wingman / flanker with the combination of size and speed he will be a tough match up.
He is very slight and needs to add some bulk before his full impact will be felt at the next level.

There is a lot of the Bulldogs Bob Murphy about the way Rotham plays and I see a high ceiling for him.

So at worst this selection delivers an speedy and accurate by foot third tall and at best an attacking tall very quick wingman who breaks the lines.

Snoop Dog your up.

GWS # 15 - Harry Perryman / 184cm / 75kg

Just a really classy player who I expect I will be called to bid on a lot earlier come the real deal. He is just really composed in traffic and makes great decisions on what to do. He has lovely foot skills on either side of his body and another one who offers a bit of scope to play in a few different roles. His pace is an issue but with blokes that think quick, decide wisely and execute then I can get past the speed issue.

Surprised lasted this long I must say!

I'm surprised Hamish Perryman got picked at all tbh!

Pick #16 Sydney Swans will select Jack Scrimshaw.
Height: 194 cm Weight: 80 kg D.O.B: 4/9/98
Position: Half back /Midfielder

Classy player who has been crulled by injury the last few years. Plays as a rebounding half backman who can pinch hit in the midfield and has a ceiling higher then most players. Has potential to be the best player in this draft but will need some time to fully develop and make up those years lost through injury. The reason I chose him here is that he is the best available and can add versatility to a strong Sydney line up.
