Round One

Pick 1. Gold Coast Suns.

Matthew Rowell.

Oakleigh Charges & Vic Metro.
Inside Midfielder. 178cm. 75kg.

Gold Coast need to hit a home run with the first pick in the draft. Their most pressing need is for quality midfielders, ready to compete from round 1, 2020.

Matt Rowell ticks all the boxes. He's an inside mid who plays a consistent brand of football, showing up game after game. He wins first use of the ball, is clean by hand or foot, tackles hard in defence, and is a good kick for goal when up forward. He looks like a 200 game prospect.

The only possible knock on Rowell might be his size, but as we've seen with the likes of Lachie Neale, size is not an issue when you can win first use of the football and distribute cleanly by hand or foot, finding team mates in better position to hurt the opposition.

Thunderstruck you're pick.

Pick #2 Adelaide - Noah Anderson 190cm 87kg Oakleigh Chargers

A very rare chance for the crows to snare one of the best in the draft and Anderson certainly qualifies as that. A clear case of best available - Anderson is the sort of player Adelaide does not have and never really has had, a tall 6ft3 midfielder who can just about do it all, the modern style footballer.

Anderson can win his own ball, and be clearly the dominant footballer on the ground through sheer weight of possession and all round production. Has the added bonus of being able to play forward better than most midfielders, is sound overhead and can hit the scoreboard all whilst still winning it 30+ times out of the middle. Can be that man who stands up and others will follow, will also tackle defensively to a strong level. It's hard to find a major weakeness in his game, perhaps it could be said his performances can ebb and flow from week to week and during the game but as far as skills and footballing go, not many will surpass him.

Pick 3 - Brodie Kemp
Bendigo Pioneers | Vic Country
193 cm 82 kg
Tall Utility

Kemps versatility and ability to play to a high standard in any position was enough to sell him to me, and for Melbourne, a team that lacks versatility IMO, his scope to be an A grader in any position is something that can't be overestimated, especially considering Melbourne's a team without any clear weakness that can be addressed by other players in this range. At AFL level I think Kemp will start as a Back Flanker and gradually build up his time in the midfield over a couple of seasons, but might be used as a third tall up forward if Melbourne were to draft him
I was going to go through and list all the positives and strengths of Kemp but think it's easier to mention his few weaknesses; Possession count and consistency. As an 18 year old I'm not too worried about his consistency as it will naturally improve with age and his ability to find greater numbers should improve with more personalised development at AFL level.

Others considered: Dylan Stephens, Hayden Young

(Snoop Dog write up is up if you want to add it to the OP)

Deven Robertson (Perth Demons)
Small (183cm) "inside" midfielder
Ball-winning accumulator who also is tough and is a visible onfield leader who will also keep putting his body on the line and also just continually getting to contest after contest; this leadership is a key differentiator for mine from the rest of a highly congested pack. Decision making seems fairly reliable and quick enough, if a little safe.

The areas of concern for mine is any significant hurt factor by foot and maybe a little lack of outright speed in-game, but in reviewing I still think he has almost as much upside as the others around this mark but is much safer than all the rest, and there is an "x factor" of sorts in that I just feel that Robertson is someone who can one day lead a midfield and bring the best out of other players around him as well as himself.

pick 5 - Sydney

Tom Green – inside midfielder
Allies/GWS Academy
188cm, 85kg

Put simply, Tom is an inside hard nut and looks the best inside bull at the pointy end of the draft. His 2019 has seen him take his game to a new level with great consistency and delivered in an outstanding carnival, having trimmed down and built his tank to a strong level. Strong in the contest, doesn’t get knocked off the ball, clean hands especially when tight inside and a decent kick when leaving stoppages. He consistently gets his 30 plus possessions with 10 plus clearances. He will start in midfield from day one.

Sydney have been restocking their midfield with players who can also run through the midfield. This is a chance to get a pure midfielder and the ideal replacement for Josh Kennedy. Sometimes you need that pure inside beast to bring the best out of a midfield group.

Davo-27 you’re up

Pick 6 Caleb Serong - Gippsland Power
178cm 83kg (sml forw/inside mid)

i'm picking best available and with Serong that is an easy decision, as an underager he played small forw/inside mid to a high standard being one of the best players at Gippsland Power in 2018 and then this year he has been moved into the midfield full time and become an amazingly strong clearance and cont poss player, his marking is elite for his height, his tackling is very strong, he is a great kick for goal and uses the ball well in the midfield, in the recent Championships he dominated the mid in 3/4 games, if you listen to his interviews he comes across as a very competitive confident young man, he mostly plays cricket in the off-season so hasnt had a real pre-season, he seems to have a good character and potentially a leader of an AFL club in the near future.

Wizard17 you're up

Easy choice for mine

Pick 9 - North Melbourne - Lachlan Ash
186cm 80kg
Murray Bushrangers/Vic Country
Rebound defender

Ash ticks so many boxes as a player with not many weaknesses to speak of, he is super quick and loves to take the game on and he has the confidence not only to burn of an opponent but also to hit the difficult kicks which he often does with ease. Ash is also a good size already to make an impact but still some room to grow aswell. Ash looks most comfortable down back so he may not have the versatility like others in this range but he is just so dangerous down back that its not an issue. I would like to see how he would handle a tag from defence if possible this year but i feel he would rise above it due to his great leadership qualities.

#10 - GWS - Sam Flanders / Gippsland Power / 182cm / 81kg

One of our local kids and think has a really bright future. Very aggressive type and can influence a game through his work in the stoppages where he is adept at winning his own footy and being able to exit the stoppage with his powerful build and explosiveness. Can also influence a game down forward and his ability to take contested marks gives him a real edge. Had a couple of really good years and showing he can play as either a mid or a forward.
