I reckon the darling move to the midfield has been a disaster - hes never been a one touch player thats required as amid and playing there has sapped his confidence

Was a mistake and its time to put it to bed - hes too small to be a kpp as well so thats two myths put to bed - can we not resurrect them.

Hhf ftw - playing high up on the wing as the ball goes i to the oppositions fwd fifty - waitingfor the the big kick out of defence.

I'm hearing that a lot on this thread, but who in our team is a one touch player apart from Bennell (does fumble but rarely, especially comparatively)? I've got no problem trying Darling in the midfield for the rest of the year, I mean it takes time to learn a new role. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think Mundy was an instant success when he was moved in to the midfield.

Le Cras is a one touch player. Besides that, I'm struggling for 'clean' players...Hill, I suppose...Ellis...Hurn?

Yeh Lecras is pretty clean, but not sure if Ellis and Hurn really cleanly pick up the ball from the ground at full pelt, maybe they do, just cant remember an instance. I just think we need to understand that Darling isn't going to be Judd in the midfield but he may well be better than most of the options we currently have if given some time

I wouldn't be critical on any of our forwards this year or last year.

Who can work out just how our mids are going to pass it to them? They might come in at their ankles and they have to pop a shoulder to mark the ball or they might come in as if they dropped from the stars and people have time to run in from perth city to spoil the ball.
Darling is learning the midfield gig and is only 21. Give him time and he will be someone in the mold of Goodes for us who can play forward and midfield..

I dont like the way he throws his head back and waves his arms around trying to milk frees, just win the footy stop being a bitch, also cant shake a tag and crumbles when the slightest bit of pressure is put on him

If he can work on those things he will be good

This is an underrated point.

Because the delivery is so inconsistent - and usually shit - the forward can't really lead into any part of the ground with certainty... so even on the rare occasions they get good delivery they're often not in the right spot or they haven't burnt their opponent on the lead as there's no point putting in a killer lead only to see it go 3 metres over your head.

I don't know, if McGovern can clunk so many marks I see no reason why Jack and JK can't step up and do the same. It's not as though our midfield is vastly different to how it was last year when JK and Jack had their mojo.

It's more where they get their marks. Darling is averaging more marks than 2013, (less than 2012) and even getting a few more contested, it's that he's getting less inside 50. So he's ranging up the ground more where his height is more useful.

Kennedy unlike Darling has had a fall in total marks, around one mark per game. But it's his contested marking that makes up most of the difference (0.7 of 0.9), which can't be blamed on supply alone. What's more interesting is that in spite of having less marks inside 50, he's getting more shots on goals than last year, which means more shots from general play and less accuracy.

but but but thats what everyone wanted. big body tick, dominant some other position tick, can't actually play midfield tick. 3/3 meets eagles fans' criteria for shoving a player in "midfield".

I'm with Thorne.

Peeps should stop making excuses for Kennedy and Darling. Yes, our midfield is pathetic. But it's been pathetic for quite a while now, and that hasn't stopped JK and Darls from being such good players before this year.

The same 1 on 1 kicks into our 50, JK and Darls would win in the past. But present day, they totally suck at 1 on 1's it's just not funny. The only time I can remember Kennedy in 2014 clunking decent marks like he used to, was when he beat up on the expansion teams. Apart from that, in the majority of games this year he's just been a passenger and yet to stamp any sort of authority on this season whatsoever.

Gov comes in and BAM.... knows how to take a ****ing mark or three. JK stumbles around, jumps early, falls over, or fumbles trying to pick up the ball.

Darls get a bit of leeway because his season hasn't been s bad as JK's, and he's still very young.

Yeah on the weekend it was so embarrassing when he was in a bit of push and shove with someone and he threw his head back when pushed in the chest.

Made me cringe.

Hi guys
This is my first post so be gentle.
When that incident happened didn't anyone see the silly smile on his face? He made the gesture to make fun of himself. The throwing back of the head was ages after the push (OK only a half a second) but it was definitly a piss-take on his behalf. I can even remember thinking to myself that the commentators will pick up on the humour...but no one did.
Did anyone else see this or am I deluded.

I saw the grin afterwards. He was taking the piss - but instantly the commentators were talking about fining or suspending him for diving/acting.

No, that's how I read it as well.

It was no piss take, he was playing for the free and it was embarrassing.

Mcgovern is the best contested mark at the eagles and has been since before his debut - kennedy and jd are more leading marks

Shit delivery kills leading marks - and we are the afl poster team for shit delivery.....

Bit harsh. Not like we are trying it for the sake of it. We are trying because our current crop aren't cutting it, better to try something in a lost year than keep on doing something that we've been doing for the past 2 years

One on one yes - not dommmuch since they double and triple team him

Kennedy's not being tripled teamed.
Especially when you have the likes of Darling and McGovern also lurking around in the forward 50.
The fact is Darling and especially Kennedy have been down on form, and simply not taking enough marks or winning enough contests.
Harp on all you want about shit delivery, but McGovern makes the most out of it, and last season the delivery was equally as bad, yet Kennedy had an impressive season.

Kennedy seems to struggle to keep on his feet a lot these days. Darling plays for frees, probably out of frustration, but he seems to be preoccupied with out-muscling opponents when his real strength is his speed for a bloke his size.

a bit like if your opening batsman sucks, and there is a bowler bowling well in first class, bring in the bowler to replace the batsman? see what i am getting at? people want the goals but how can he kick them if he is playing in another position? doenst make sense. but nothing does to eagles fans except the typical simplistic and plain dumb way of looking at football.

I would say that's a terrible analogy. Football is completely different game from cricket. Freo moved a full back when drafted (mundy) into the midfield. Essendon moved a forward (Watson) into the midfield. I think it's quite an obvious ploy to try moving an undersized key position player into the midfield as opposed to opening the batting with a bowler, terrible analogy. A better one would have been moving an all rounder to open ala Shane Watson, as something worth trying without a guarantee of success.

first bolded bit -> wow, thank you genius.

second bolded bit -> not really. being an all rounder suggests ability. darling is not an all rounder when it comes to midfield. someone like Pavlich is an all rounder in football terms.

'worth a try' indicates coaches don't know what they are doing. just because fans don't know how someone 'will go' playing in a separate position, doesn't mean coaches don't. do they all sit around and play with themselves all the time? pretty sure they have a very good idea who can do what, when and how. but everyone likes the hope. even if misplaced. and now we are where we are.

we need to wait until we draft proper midfielders to improve. everything else is really desperation which leads nowhere.
