List Mgmt. Big key forward

Have you seen how much cash he’s asking Melbourne for? No thanks...
Less than J Howe asked MFC for.
He's not worth $650k and won't get it. The argument might fracture the relationship though. He's worth talking to IMO. We have outside mids and that's what Melbourne need.

It's about 30% more than the average AFL wage. Too much for a player like Weideman.
I think $371,000 is the average last time I checked I believe so if he is asking for $650,000 he is asking for too much.

$400,000 type player imo

Howe had a godfather offer from GC on the table as well though, so a very different scenario. Lucky for us he decided that playing for Collingwood was more important than $$$!

I actually think that all Melbourne need is a game plan that increases stoppages and takes advantage of their inside quality, rather than a game plan of open games with plenty of run, which doesn't seem to suit their list.

That was our 2002/2003 game plan. It wasn't enough foir them last year and it hasn't worked for them this year. If they can turn it around this season then they will be less inclined to seek runners but if not they will be looking.

I'd argue that it's also the basis of our current game plan. Create and win stoppages and then generate run through numbers and overlapping spread rather than through flashy outsiders.

So Stevo has a lot of weaknesses?
wow

That's tough judgement on a kid that's played one season, won the Rising Star and played in a Granny in his first year as well as kicking a whole heap of goals.

How'd you rate Bucks after his first year?

That might be skewed by the fact he was coming home after a wasted year at the Bears.

This kid is a free pick for anyone that pulls the trigger in the mid season draft

Will Kennedy – Western Jets (TAC Cup)

Moving from Sandringham to Western Jets as an over-age player, could provide an option for a club looking for a future key-position prospect.

Height: 198cm
Weight: 88kg
Current Team: Western Jets
Birthday: June 18, 2000 (18yr 10mth)

DRAFT ANALYSIS: “Deployed in multiple roles, Kennedy is a strong overhead mark, competes well in contests, and his mobility is superb."

OVERVIEW
Splitting playing commitments with the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup and Caulfield Grammar in the APS competition, Will Kennedy has caught the eye of recruiters and draft experts alike, well-corroborated by selection in the Vic Metro squad and, more recently, invitation to the National Draft Combine. Throughout the season, Kennedy displayed his versatility as a swingman. For the Dragons, Kennedy was often deployed in the backline, but frequently drifted forward and also provided ample assistance in the ruck. The 198cm prospect was regularly seen to compete well in defence, with his spoiling and intercept marking ability well-documented throughout the season. What has Kennedy standout from fellow key-position prospects, though, is his mobility around the ground. His movement is proficient for his size, in addition to a remarkable endurance base. Not only is he a booming, long kick, but Kennedy’s field kicking also proved eye-opening throughout the 2018 season. A standout performance came in round 10 of the TAC Cup season, where Kennedy’s 19 disposals, five marks and three tackles in a key-defensive effort saw him earn the full-back position in AFL Draft Central’s Team of the Week. Kennedy was also impressive in the Dragons’ 43-point win over the Bushrangers in week two of the TAC Cup finals series, with 16 disposals, six marks and 15 hitouts.

STRENGTHS
  • Versatility
  • Mobility
  • Kicking
  • Endurance
Kennedy’s versatility is his clearest strength, playing his best TAC Cup football this season in defence, despite being widely regarded as a developing tall forward who can pinch-hit in the ruck. His mobility around the ground has become a well-known feature of his game, for an almost 200cm player, Kennedy is able to cover the ground better than most in that regard. If he did not have the likes of Ben King beside him he would look even more impressive in that Dragons’ outfit. He is not a super athlete in the way that his acceleration and agility is not that good, but his high-level endurance allows him to keep a consistent pace throughout the four quarters and often wear down his opponents over time.
Furthermore, his kicking is often penetrating and accurate and while he finished the TAC Cup season with a kicking efficiency of 58.7 per cent, he had just 10.7 per cent of his kicks end in direct turnovers, so he was able to use the ball well when given the opportunities. Vic Metro was a hard squad to break into so while Kennedy did not quite get a chance there – with injury playing a major part – he was able to impress through school and TAC Cup football. Kennedy can also find the football which is an impressive trait, averaging more than 14 touches per game, better than many similar positioned players.

IMPROVEMENTS
  • Size
  • Consistency
  • Speed
At 198cm but just 86kg, Kennedy is still very much a raw prospect, who will likely need time to put on weight in order to compete with men at AFL level. His strength in the contest at under-18 level is strong, but will look to add at least 10 kilograms to his frame over the next couple of years in the AFL system. Additionally, Kennedy will look to improve his consistency, after drifting in and out of games throughout the 2018 season. Had a stellar elimination final against the Bushrangers, but could not bring the same impact against the Stingrays in the preliminary final, with just three effective disposals. At 198cm, Kennedy will never be the quickest footballer, but may also look to improve his speed over pre-season.

SUMMARY

Kennedy is likely to be a sought-after prospect due to his versatility; he has impressed as a key-defender, proved impactful up forward, and is more than capable in the ruck, where he has demonstrated ability not only pinch-hitting, but winning hit-outs himself. By extension, the Caulfield Grammarian is mobile across the ground, with his kicking also a prominent feature.

I'd rather take a chance on a kid like this than some mid 20's state leaguer HF/Hb/Mid type.

Have to wonder if adding Keene, Tohill and Wilson will cool the clubs interest in another KPP/ruck type.

Didn't rate his prelim game last time he was fit? almost dragged GWS into the GF. He has talent but knee's are a concern. For mine it would depend on cost and medical.

Think he is too big and slow for the modern game. We have Cox as that big forward. Don’t need another on our list, particularly with his injury history.

Cameron is the modern forward so no to Patton and other goalsquare gorillas, we wouldn't even be bothering with Cox except he's 8 ft tall.

Hang on, I thought DeGoey was the modern forward? Or was that last weeks modern forward?
Remember the days when Jarryd Blair was the modern forward?

(Too soon? I’ll see myself out.)

Don't spend big on one dimensional KPFs...

Cox, Mihocek, Magden, Keane, Tohill, Wilson... there are many KPP out there that wont cost a top 5 pick or significant salary cap. It is very much a punt (Ben Richmond) but likewise a top 5 rated KPP (Paddy McCartin) doesn't guarantee success.

Unless a suitable experienced type can be picked up on the cheap (Roughead).... Pies doing the right thing by utilising Category B list and prioritising 190cm+ types.

It's funny how 12 months ago this seemed like a glaring weakness now it's an abundance of riches with no change of forward personnel... everybody has just stepped up.

Imo it still is a weakness. Its not a position of envy for opposition sides and vs quality defences like WC and Geel it has been shut down.
The reason you see it as an abundance of riches is because Mihocek is performing his role, Reid came back looked decent and then the very inconsistent Cox is injured but rated on here highly for his ability to sometimes "halve a contest" but little else.

All 3 have flaws but doing enough to gel as a unit with the bevy of smaller fwds, so its generally working as a collective.

Our forward line rocks. Wce shut down our forwards by shutting down our mids, stopping our transition and starving the forwards.

I'll admit what I have seen of Naughton is limited but he looks to have all the makings of a gun key forward for over a decade. Stevo has a worrying case of 2nd year blues.

Even with the benefit of short term hindsight you still make a terrible call.

Stevenson has picked up the last few weeks. Don’t under estimate the dynamic of our forward line. One of the most potent in the league.

How long ago did I say that? Naughton has indeed kicked on even further since then almost breaking the most contested marks in a game record and kicking 5. Stephenson has gotten better in the last 2 weeks put in a position he is more familiar and potent in and I never said he was s**t, he was just in a funk. Both players have extremely bright futures. I actually prefer Stephenson up front than De Goey so I am a fan because he always wins his one on ones and is crafty enough to hide his small frame very well but at the start of the season it was clear Stevo wasn't yet having the same impact as he did in his first year in a different position but since he has gone back to playing forward he has picked up where he left off. I always said he was more damaging as a deep forward.
