What is it with girls who have these weddings that cost $30,000 and upwards and expect others to spend ridiculous amouts of money just so they feel special for a day?

I know lots of girls recently who resent having to be on a bridal party and have to fork out for a dress, shoes, make up, manicure, hair etc etc. What makes girls expect their friends to spend upwards of $500 for one day just so they can feel like a princess?

One funny thing is this: Most girls always comment on how ugly the bridesmaid dresses are that they have to wear but for some unlnown reason think it will be different when they get married and get to chose the bridesmaid's dresses. The brides often delude themselves that the cost of the dress (paid by the bridesmaid) is justified because they can wear it again. Never seen a girl out anywhere in a bridesmaid dress other than after a wedding.

What is going on here?

ps before you pedantic ballet dancing picky police start harping on about how not all weddings are like that and sometimes the parents or even bride and groom pay for the bridal party's expenses - don't bother. I'm just talking about the ones who expect the bridal party to pay for it all - and there's plenty of them.

A few times. Not recently though. But many of her friends and my female friends often complain about this problem. They don't like going to weddings when they are expected to spend $500 upwards for one day for someone else's happiness. Particularly when they are saving for a deposit on a house or have bills to pay. And also because they have to fork out this money to wear an ugly dress.

If you find out the answer to women please post it.

Personally could never justify spending that amount of money on a 1 day celebration. With that sort of money, you could have a regular wedding and go travelling on a 3 month honeymoon. Each to their own - as stupid as it seems, for some girls it is the most important day of their life, a day that they have been dreaming of since childhood.

I can't understand why if someone put so much money into a wedding they would not pay for the wedding parties requirements. I have heard so many women complain about the expense of being in a bridal party, and seen the arguements and bitterness of paying for shoes and a dress that they will never wear again and don't even like.

But, there is a simple answer. Withdraw from the wedding party, and just attend as a guest.

I agree to an extent. I have always thought that some engaged couples spend more time and resources on the wedding day than the actual marriage- but that said coming from a wog background it was easier to go along with Mum's more extended list than to fight it (even though my wife and I paid for it!)

Surely the key is to never spend more on the wedding than you expect to receive back in the form of gifts.

The last wedding I was invited to had a free wedding service followed by a $300 a plate reception. Most attended the church service and the reception was a ghost town ... bride was well miffed.

I've been in 2 weddings, as a bridesmaid.. and both times, the bride said the dresses were being paid for by her..

the first one, was the ugliest dress ever. only wore it that day, and now is just packed away in a box. the second was that nice, i wouldn't have minded paying for it, and i have worn it since.

but..if people want/feel the need to spend that much money on a wedding, as it's their money, its their decision..
personally, i could never spend anywhere near $30,000 as was said in the first post.

Einstein in his younger days planned to do his PHD on "understanding the female psyche".

After the few months of this, he decided that finding out everything there is to know about the origin and fate of the universe would be easier.

Just say no, pure and simple. That is why i didn't go to the school ball when invited, as i thought it was no different to a night out with your mates - except that you have to wear a bloody suit.

God I can't imagine making the bridesmaids of my future wedding fork out their own money for the dress etc, unless it was a black dress or something they definitely would wear again but even then, it's my day, it's my responsibility!

Half of me desperately wants a big wedding, just because I always have dreamed of sashaying around in a big white dress etc...but as I've grown up, I just can't imagine it, how could I justify such an expense on one day when I've got a mortgage, bills etc, I'd rather spend the money on the honeymoon and have a good holiday and a small weddin if I was spending the money at all.

My wedding was at my inlaws place, great view, by the pool, fully catered. We paid under 2000 for 50 guests, including dresses.I paid for the dresses and everyhting for the bridesmaids.

Last year we went to the best wedding I have been to.It was at the little church in Mt Mee, amazing views over the Brisbane basin.50 guests.Walk across the road to the reception at Munchkins, food to die for.Open bar. I am told this extravagance cost 45 per head for the 50 people all up.

The couple could aford a lot more, and chose not to sway to family pressure to have it near her family on Sydneys North Shore, but to be more realistic.

With the extra cash, they threw a huge shindig BBQ the next day at their house, fully catered, bused all the guests in, plus airconditioned their house fully, and had the honeymoon of their dreams.

I think they got it right.

I keep saying to my kids, don't marry the ones who want the trimmings, they will send you broke. Why pay 1000.00 just for bonbonaire.
