Big Wood

I'm not sure that's correct, I believe he was 105 and unfit when he came to us , struggled on the track initially and has been trying to lose the weight over the last few months. Someone can clarify this.

i think initially the reports of him struggling weren't due to being unfit, they were caused by illness, where one particular report talked about him taking part in the tan run, and doing poorly, but earning praise because the coaches were happy for him to give it a miss. maybe people know something i don't so i'm not sure, but those player weights from one year to the next seem a little dubious to me.

I think Brisbane recruit on the 'best available' principle, rather than needs based, particularly in the early rounds of the draft, so when Leuenberger was still available at pick 4 when he ws widely tipped to be the no 1 pick in that draft, Brisbane snaffled him.

He must have overtook Wood as a young, developing ruckman and they had no need for that many ruckman but Wood isn't their version of Chris Bryan, he is very talented and would never have been let go if Leuenberger weren't there, and Leuenberger has huge wraps on him and Wood is highly touted as well just Brisbane had an embarassment of riches in that department so played on it and picked up Travis Johnstone instead to help the midfield.

Exactly. It was actually Wood who initiated trade talks. Being behind Charman and Leuenberger (who are both fairly young) his prospects of getting a regular senior gig may have seemed a long way away. This is why Wood looked elsewhere and why Brisbane didn't fight to keep him.

Where have you read this?

to me he seems like another stick type ruckman, who will end up being a slight type build.

Best comparison i could think of would be to D.Hale from the Kangas....he is a skinny but highly rated young ruck, but the bigger bodied McIntosh has flown past him now.

Hope Wood can fill out, but dont see it to be honest.

Fraser still will be our number 1 ruck in 08

Wood is hardly a stick ruckman. At 20 he is already a similar weight to Fraser.

Have a look at the photos from the Albany game. While he isn't a monster he has a decent frame.

He'll play every game this year if he's fit or not rested / rotated with Bryan.

Based on my viewings last year, he wasn't far off AFL if at all and at most other teams he would have got more of a run. This year he has put on some more muscle as expected and he'll be good to go.

When he wins taps, he gets them to advantage and he is capable around the ground. He does look a bit ungainly due to 205 cms size, as he looks to have an extra joint in his spine, but he is effective.

My expectations are not that he will dominate, but that he will be a good back up ruckman in 2008. It's not like he won't be first choice by default though!

Yep, he was good in patches which is what you'd expect from a young ruckman, and he earnt himself a rising star nomination.

i dont know why pies supporters are still doubting the move of getting wood. im guessing it was the basis of the reports in the media once it happened, part of the media thought it was a bad move(sheehan from memory, who has no brains anyway)

we had actual brisbane supporters posting on here when the trade happened, that they were sad to see wood go, as they thought he had a lot of potential and a lot to offer. from the games i also saw him play , i was impressed.

cant wait to see him play for the black and white

Hi guys, I went to Albany on the weekend and the 2 most impressive kids IMO were Cam Wood and John Mcarthy. Cam looks a bit like Monkhorst in his prime (physically not facially) and towers over most of our players. He made Rocca look midsized and his build was very similar but all muscle up against Cox (Eagles) he was impressive. He's no stick figure and although taller than Monkhorst (his build is similar) he stands as much taller than his team-mates as Monkey used to. His first kick for goals was a shocker and had me worried after all that I have heard about his kicking action. 50 out directly in front out on the full, but his 2 other shots were beautiful. The second of which from about 65 out straight thro the middle post height. Admittedly it was with the aid of a strong breeze but dead straight and struck sweet as a nut. His around the ground work was quite good too, in short I reckon he could have a big future as #1 ruckman. :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

John McArthy wasn't quite as impressive IMO as Wood but has courage, pace, class and a body ready made for AFL. He made some poor decisions ( I don't think they were inept kicks just poor decision making) but he looks the goods too. Iles worked hard and got plenty of the ball but many disposals were just not good enough, Wellingham also worked hard read the play well but had no luck whatsoever. Reid was more than handy but no Rusling yet, he has plenty more growing to do. Nathan Brown made some errors but showed plenty of promise.
Anyone else you want to know about?:)

This is a snap of Wood in the background, he is still a long way off being a big ruckman.

Being compared to Fraser aint anything special, Fraser is a stick!

The upper bodies of Stanley and R.Shaw are much more defined than Woods.

People need to lower their expectations for Wood, he is only a 20 yr old ruck......the last talented 20 yr old ruck we had we drove into the ground.....surely we will learn from what has happened to Josh and not over work Wood before he is ready.

Get off our board you sun screen drinking hillbilly, with a card board cut out and a back up ruckmen we almost beat you so i would watch my mouth if i was you

He will become our number 1 ruckman to release josh around the ground.
In 2-3 years time perhaps.

Woody is touted to become a bullocking ruckman once he fills out a little, similar in size and action to Jamie Charman.
 Doesn't play like Charman at all. In fact, as rucks, their styles are as apart as you coud find.

Think it is the fact that we aint had a quality ruck in a long time that people get overly excited by any kid that has some talent.

Perhaps some need to be reminded that G.Richards was the best junior tap ruck of his draft, and J.Fraser was the Kreuzer of his time.

Allowing ruckman time to develop and grow into their bodies is vitally important.

Fraser was never allowed to, and Richards was unable to.

Hopefully Wood can come good, but no gaurantee

He's definitely got talent, no doubt about that, but he plays nothing like Charman in style.
we all (well most of us) know that mate.

Did it surprise you to hear he went from 98Kg last year to 105Kg this year or has he always been good at putting on body weight

After Frasr abd richards Im scepticall with big men

And for all your success last year it's still 7 flags to 14, I guess that's the difference between big time and small town..

Better luck next century handbag :p

From what little I have seen of Cam, I am very confident he will be a very good ruckman. Now we just need to give him time and support and let him. :thumbsu:

well it was a good test on the weekend going against one of the best ruck duos in the league in cox and seaby. hearing that wood had a pretty decent game and held his own is encouraging. even if it was a practice match
