AFLW Fantasy on BigFooty

RULES:

1. League setup for Season 1

For the inaugural BigFooty AFLW Fantasy league, the aim will be to have eight clubs. To sign-up, coaches will nominate their interest, and their club of preference with a second and third preference.

Preferred club:
2nd preference:
3rd preference:

Once eight coaches have nominated, the coaches will be provided with two clubs from which to form their list. In order to ensure as much fairness as possible, these clubs will be the opposite ends of the spectrum. For example, if a coach receives Adelaide or Melbourne, they will also likely receive a West Coast or St Kilda (depending on club nominations).

2. Team setup

Once the coaches have received their two clubs, they set about picking a minimum of 20 players and a maximum of 30 from those two lists. The maximum of 30 means that coach will not partake in the preseason draft. A coach who selects the minimum of 20 players will have 10 selections in the preseason draft, while 21 players will have nine, 22 players will have eight, and so on.

3. Preseason Draft

Once the coaches have made their selections, the Preseason Draft will feature the full lists of the two clubs who were not chosen, as well as those players not picked by their respective coaches. The draft will be a maximum of 80 picks (10 selections x 8 clubs).

Once the Preseason Draft is complete, then coaches will confirm their list of 30 players.

4. Preseason Trading

A short Preseason Trade Period will take place while the Preseason Draft is on for coaches to trade players. These trades must be of equal value, ie. 1 for 1, 2 for 2 etc. The Preseason Trade Period will close before the first bounce of Round 1.

4. List changes throughout the season

There are two ways lists can change throughout the season:

  • Long Term Injuries (LTIs)
  • Mid-Season Draft
In the case of LTIs, if a player is ruled out for a minimum of six (6) weeks, then they may be replaced by a free agent. This free agent would then come onto the list and become a permanent member of the team, with the LTI player then back in the open pool at year’s end.

The Mid-Season Draft will be held at the end of Round 4, and allow clubs to delist up to three (3) players and recruit replacements. These can be for any reason be it short-term injury, form or otherwise.

In future seasons if successful, mid-season trading will be implemented, but for now we will keep it simple.

5. End of Season list management

The end of season list management will be confirmed, with the hope to increase to more coaches in 2023. There will be an element of carry-over players and long-term list management, with the exact number of carry-overs to be confirmed at season’s end. This year will be treated as a tester year to see what happens.

6. League structure

For the inaugural year, there will be eight teams, which run for seven (7) regular season rounds between Rounds 1-7. From there, a three-week finals series will take place. The finals series will be as follows:

Round 8 – Semi-Finals: (A) 1 v 2 | (B) 3 v 4
Round 9 – Preliminary Final: (C) Loser of A vs Winner of B
Round 10 – Grand Final: (D) Winner of A vs Winner of C

7. Scoring

The scoring will be via the AFL Fantasy scores which can be found on the AFL Women’s app, or any provider that sources AFL Women’s statistics.
The team that scores the most combined points from the 21 will be declared the winner.

8. Premiership points

A win is worth four (4) points, a draw is worth two (2) points, and a loss is worth zero (0) points.

9. Draws in finals

In the scenario that a draw takes place in a final, there are several scenarios for tiebreakers:

1 The team with the highest captain’s score goes through
2 In the case that the captain’s scores are identical, the team with the highest vice-captain’s score will go through
3 In the case that the captain and vice-captain’s scores are identical, the team that finished higher on the ladder will win the match

10. Team selection

The team selection will consist of a line-up similar to the AFL Women’s with five (5) defenders, five (5) forwards, five (5) midfielders and one ruck (1) on-field, with five interchange players.

The team will also feature three emergencies to replace players within the team. The order that the emergencies come in will be from left to right. Coaches will also pick a captain and vice-captain each week, with the captain receiving double points. If the captain does not play, the vice-captain will receive double points.

Team selection is due before the first bounce of the Round. As it is the first season, we will be lenient on mistakes, with forgetting to submit a team meaning the exact line-up from the previous week will be used.

Hi there, I also play AFLW Fantasy and am involved in Draft Fantasy footy in TooSerious. I'd be keen to be involved if you can get others on board.
Awesome, what team preferences would you like?

Big Dockers fan so I'll go with them at 1 and then mix and match the rest as I'm sure most will want one of the "big 3"

1. Fremantle
2. Carlton
3. Bulldogs

Awesome, feel free to let the others know from those games if they want to play too :)

If we can find one more coach it would be perfect at least so we can roll with six and have three teams each to divide up. I decided I'll want to run this regardless because I feel that with more time there will be greater interest as we go on. Could even run a placeholder sixth team if someone comes in late.

If it stays at 6 teams, are you thinking about byes for the first three rounds? Gives more time to check out the players and select them. Or a league style, play everyone twice without finals? I wouldn't mind that really.

I'm thinking the play everyone twice. What I'll sort out now since I do want to try out the draft aspect is each coach has two teams and we'll run a draft (as I said max 80 picks and we effectively have just under, hopefully can get done in a week) for the rest. If we get any more between us confirming lists and the draft (a couple of days) which would be max two more, then it still allows for a draft of at least two teams (with 12 gone already and four more with two additional teams).

I think with more time what can be done for next season is in advance working out list management so by R1 we're all set to go.

Okay so what I've done is divide up teams to give each person at least one of their preferred top two teams and balance them out with another. I wanted each coach to have a top six side so the draft pool is filled with mid-to-lower sides for balance.

So here's what I've done:

Pie 4 Life - Collingwood / Port Adelaide
oneleggedwonders - Fremantle / Carlton
Munga - Adelaide / St Kilda
Determinant - North Melbourne / GWS GIANTS
samFFC - Brisbane / Richmond
Biggie - Melbourne / West Coast
Tarkyn_24 - Essendon / Western Bulldogs
spooner21 Gold Coast / Sydney*

*To be confirmed otherwise Collingwood as one

TEAMS FOR THE DRAFT:

Hawthorn
Geelong

From here:

If everyone can come up with a list of between 20 (10 picks in the draft) and 30 (no picks in the draft) from their two sides. In the case of inactive players they can be selected and not counted as list numbers. So in the case of Davey, Bonnici, T Smith, Gooch etc. they can be picked by the coaches then placed on the inactive list. When it comes to next season and they are off the inactive list, they'll count as a list number so to keep that in mind for delistings. Just list them here in this thread, so the free agents can be added to the draft pool.

The draft order will be randomised.

NOTE: IF MORE COACHES COME ON THEN EVERYONE WILL HAVE THE CHANCE TO ALTER THEIR TOTAL INITIAL LIST PLAYERS (as it will obviously dilute the draft pool)

In terms of positions, we'll go by the AFLW Fantasy site, as I said we're aiming for a full 21-player squad with the five defenders, five midfielders, five forwards, one ruck and five interchange (can be any positions). Given that there will be only the six teams at this stage, clearly there shouldn't be any issues with fielding a team as everyone should just about have 30 players playing each week. If anyone is unsure with a player just ask, we'll be flexible as it's effectively a test.

Though the amount of carryovers for next season is yet to be determined (depending on coach interest) it is designed to be a long-term management game, so a focus on beyond this season is balanced with winning overall (so youth won't be wasted). My long-term goal is to effectively be like the real AFLW and the list changes are minimal with a trade period / free agent off-season.

Sounds good. May I suggest the serpentine method for the initial draft, as teams can't be ranked yet? It's just fairer.

Also, I'd love to have T.Smith on the inactive list but she isn't officially down as inactive, even though the chance of playing a match is slim. So I won't do it hehe.

Yeah it will be serpentine, it’s why I’ve tried to balance teams as even as possible (obviously taking into consideration ladder position). At least by only taking a portion of each team’s list, they aren’t as affected back those with less depth.

Did you want Collingwood and one of the spare ones from the list to combine? I can just take another from the list if need be.
I’m happy to go Essendon and whoever else you feel will keep things pretty level, maybe Dogs?

Yeah they're probably the best, you're just picking 20 players from those squads, so though they don't have the depth of others, a midfield of Blackburn, Prespakis, Lamb, Gee and Cain (as an example) is a pretty strong one.
