Gary Ablett Wins 2008 AFLPA MVP AWARD

GARY Ablett was last night voted the most valuable player in the league by his peers, winning the plaudit for consecutive seasons.

The Geelong midfielder won the players' vote resoundingly, gaining 1088 votes to Hawthorn's Lance Franklin (718 votes) and North Melbourne's Brent Harvey (440).

Tiger veteran Matthew Richardson (148 votes) and Carlton captain Chris Judd (140) rounded out the top five.

Joining Greg Williams, Wayne Carey and Michael Voss as a two-time winner, Ablett last night accepted the Leigh Matthews Trophy at a dinner held by the AFL Players Association at the Grand Hyatt.

After being presented the trophy by Matthews, Ablett said: "It's definitely something that means a lot to me and it's a very exciting award to win.

"Growing up, the biggest part you love about football is actually being out there on the field. So when you get out there, you're always trying to improve your game, and I just get out there and try to enjoy myself and if I play better footy, I do, and if I don't but I give it my best, that's all I can do."

Whether Ablett can win the Brownlow Medal after missing four matches with injury will be revealed in a fortnight. After the home-and-away rounds, he had accrued 503 disposals, 84 marks and an average of just under five tackles a game.

Cats captain Tom Harley thought Ablett's 2008 season had topped his excellent 2007 and at the function last night described his teammate's form leading up to his foot injury as "breathtaking".

"He had an amazing season last year and our best-and-fairest, I think he won it by a record amount. It's a pretty hard season to top. But if you can do that … he's probably done it this year. He's just a fantastic player," Harley said.

Tom Harley Wins 2008 AFLPA Best Captain Award

The Cats' premiership skipper received 141 votes, 38 clear of Carlton captain Chris Judd with Sydney's Brett Kirk third.

Harley said he felt the role of captain went far beyond leading the team out onto the field every weekend.

"I think (it's) being a voice for the players inside the club and working with the senior players to make sure the guys are as best prepared as possible going into the games," Harley said.

Geelong 11.23 (89) V Hawthorn 18.7 (115)

Congratulations to the Hawthorn Football Club for their impressive win over the Cats. Geelong was plagued by inaccurate kicking at goal, kicking 1. 9. in the second quarter. This cost them the match in the end. Geelong Dominated most of the play for three quarters but just couldn't put the scoreboard pressure on the Hawks. While Hawthorn made the most of their inside 50's despite Franklin and Roughead being well held.

Serious questions will be asked about the forward set up at Geelong with Hodge proving that our forwards could be locked down. After dominating the season the Cats will now look back on 2008 as a year of wasted opportunities. The real measure of their merit will be in how they shape up again next season. Bad luck to the Cats, but we are still behind you 100%. Win, lose or Draw we will stand by our team.

We lost our way, says Bomber

GEELONG coach Mark Thompson admitted the side lost its way yesterday after failing to capitalise on a dream season with back-to-back premierships.

The Cats deviated from the game plan and made some uncharacteristic errors in the 26 point loss to Hawthorn - only its second defeat for the year.

Thompson denied the players were cocky and said he wouldn't have done anything differently in regards to planning or selection.

"I don't feel that they felt the pressure," he said.

"Like all of us, we expected to win and maybe that second quarter it didn't matter that we ran into goals and didn't handball off and kick points, because eventually we'd get the team that we were playing.

"That's just wrong. To win premierships you need to do everything right and Hawthorn were absolutely spectacular today.

"I don't think we were cocky. On the day we just didn't work well enough together.

"And that's just been a lot of the special traits and habits about our players and our team. I thought we didn't play consistently well enough as a team. That there were some people just going against what we planned to do.

"It might be just the occasion and the pressure. It was a Grand Final, too, and funny things can happen in Grand Finals and it certainly happened today.

"We thought that if we played OK we were a chance to win. There's no certainties in this business and we were beaten by a better team on the day."

Thompson said the side, which had won 42 of 44 games, was still a force and would not make any drastic changes.

He said the forward line, which wasted a mountain of opportunities and endured at least 10 rushed points, was most disappointing.

"I thought we dominated the play and did a lot right," Thompson said.

"I told the players, don't give up on the game plan because we've won 42 of 44 games, and if we had our day again today we'd probably plan the same way but we'd just hope to implement it better. We did a lot right, had a lot of entries, but obviously just didn't play quite as well as a team.

"The game plan's held up. Maybe if the game was played next week we'd probably do it better and beat the Hawks. But on this day they've got the points and the premiership and they thoroughly deserve it.

"But it doesn't mean that we're just going to panic and be ruthless and sack people and forget about what we've done. We're still a very, very good club.

"We had some players there doing some roles but they didn't do it as well. I just didn't think the forward line functioned that well together at all today.

''Our defenders were fantastic, our midfielders were reasonable and our forwards, to have 62 opportunities and score 10 or 11, it's not enough."

Gary Ablett was best for the Cats with 34 possessions, while Matthew Scarlett restricted Lance Franklin to 2.1.

Thompson said Ablett would have been a deserving winner of the Norm Smith Medal.

"He couldn't have done any more," Thompson said of Ablett.

"He was fantastic, Scarlett was fantastic, Lingy was great on Mitchell, Mackie gave us plenty of drive, the old boy Dasher (Milburn) was great, Enright rebounds . . . there were a lot of positives but in the end there weren't enough.

"Ablett's performance was sensational. He looked like he just wanted to win so much.

''I wish he had a few friends."

Joel Corey Wins The Carji Greeves medal 2008

wbAFLcorey_narrowweb__300x507,0.jpg

GEELONG midfielder Joel Corey has won the Cats' best-and-fairest award for 2008, edging out Brownlow Medal favourite and last year's winner, Gary Ablett, by 53 votes.

Corey played every game in 2008 and led the league for disposals in the home-and-away season, with 730. Corey also led his club in contested possessions, centre clearances, handballs and tackles, and was second for kicks.

The award is Corey's second Carji Greeves Medal, following his 2005 success.

Corey last night paid tribute at Crown's Palladium to his teammates, particularly Ablett and third-placegetter Jimmy Bartel, whom he referred to as "probably the best player in the league, and the second-best player in the league".

"The calibre of blokes running around these day is just about second to none, so to be standing up here, I've just got to touch wood," he said.

Ablett has missed out on a trifecta of coveted gongs in the past fortnight: the Brownlow last week despite being a hot favourite, and his star turn in the Cats' losing grand final effort — he collected 34 possessions, kicked two goals and had eight clearances — was not enough to win him the Norm Smith Medal, which went to Hawthorn's Luke Hodge.

Corey was one of the Cats' top performers in the Brownlow count, with 15 votes, behind Ablett (22) and Joel Selwood (19).

Other award winners were young defender Harry Taylor for best first-year player, Steve Johnson for leading goalkicker (53) and captain Tom Harley as best clubman.

Coach Mark Thompson made a point of praising his players, who lost only one game in the home-and-away season before last Saturday's grand final.

"Let me tell you, we all put the same amount of effort in (as last year), we just didn't get the result," he told the 1500 guests. "When we won the premiership last year, I said to you all, it doesn't really matter who gets the credit, and this year, a year on . . . there shouldn't be any blame."

He quipped: "It's certainly not the coach's fault!"

GEELONG needed just one quarter of near-perfect football to crush Collingwood and claim the NAB Cup premiership last night.

After a tight opening term, the Cats monstered Collingwood in the second - winning the ball at will and running in waves, they piled on six goals to nil to kill the contest.

Geelong maintained its pressure for the second half to run away 70-point winners, 0.18.19.127 to 1.6.6.51 at Etihad Stadium.

The only downer for the Cats' night came when Josh Hunt's knee buckled under a tackle - scans will reveal the full damage today.

In a quarter which wouldn't look out of place in the depths of September, Geelong registered 24 to three inside 50s in the second, with 17 more contested possessions and six more clearances.

The Cats' midfield, led by Michael Tuck medallist Joel Selwood and Gary Ablett, was irrepressible.

The pair won their ball forward of the centre and kicked to a queue of forwards featuring a busy Matthew Stokes and fit-again Tom Hawkins who galloped around the forward line like a bull.

An inaccurate but energetic Hawkins was a positive for Geelong. He regularly man-handled his opponent - often Simon Prestigiacomo - in marking contests and fought well at ground level.

But the form of Selwood and Ablett was the story of the night.

Selwood's 33-possession performance was the most complete of the NAB Cup. He won 14 contested possessions (seven more than the Pies' best), 10 clearances and delivered the ball inside 50 five times.

In close, opponents were largely irrelevant to the third-year player, any interaction typically a flailing hand over the shoulder.

His power around the packs was simply too much for Collingwood's on-ball brigade to handle.

And what needs to be said about Ablett?

His zip and penetrating kicks added the serrated edge to Geelong's attack.

For the last 45 minutes of the match, Collingwood seemed resigned to the inevitable - Ablett appeared to run free and finished with 35 possessions, five inside 50s and three goals.

All night, Geelong's pressure haunted the Pies like a spectre.

Too often they were forced into short, indirect disposals while in contrast, Geelong moved the ball through the corridor with almost comical ease.

This was a win of epic proportions, a complete physical domination which could have been worse had the Cats been able to convert at least six easy misses.

Congratulations Joel Selwood: Michael Tuck Medalist

THEY’RE not a bad footballing family, the Selwoods.

Two brothers already have premiership medallions, and Joel Selwood added to the trophy cabinet on Friday night when he won the Michael Tuck Medal for best afield in the NAB Cup grand final.

The Cats got hold of the Magpies in the second term and effectively ended the contest on their way to a 40-point half-time lead.

The Geelong midfield was the prime mover in the destruction, with Selwood kicking two goals and Gary Ablett three.

Selwood said everything just clicked in the second term as the team worked towards its pre-match goal.

"You go through little patches in games and I was still feeling pretty fresh going into the second quarter," he said of his own performance.

"You do feel like you’re getting the ball a bit, but you go back to the basics and I don’t think there was anything too special that I did out there tonight.

"Any premiership you play for, you want to win and Matty Scarlett made that pretty clear at the start of the game. Cameron Ling did too."

But despite all his success, Selwood, who won’t celebrate his 21st birthday until May, said he's in no danger of getting carried away with himself.

"As Bomber (coach Mark Thompson) said, it’s easy with the calibre of players you’ve got around to try and lift the standard, so it’s easy to follow suit," he said.

"It’s not hard down at Geelong – you get pulled back into line pretty quick.

"If you’re doing something wrong, I’m sure Harls (captain Tom Harley) or Lingy (Cameron Ling) – they’ll jump on it pretty quick.

"I don’t put too much pressure on myself. I just come out and play the role for the side and I think every team member did that today.

"Especially in the first three quarters, anyway – we played really good footy, and that’s where we want to be at."

AFLPA MVP AWARDS 2009

Joel Selwood voted "Most Courageous Player" for 2009

http://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au/article/2009/09/08/101741_gfc.html

IN three seasons at Geelong, Joel Selwood has won the respect of teammates and opponents for his fierce attack on the football.

At Crown Casino in Melbourne last night, Selwood's hard-nosed and ruthless reputation was officially recognised by his peers when he was named the winner of the AFL Players' Association most courageous player award.

The trophy, named in honour of former Collingwood and Footscray star and Victorian cricketer Robert Rose, is one of the most highly respected honours in the game because it is voted on by every player in the competition.
