I actually just put Slaughter of the Soul in for the first time in about a year. Couldn't be bothered with the new one to begin with and definitely not even going to give it a curious look after that appraisal. Slaughter of the Soul is awesome. I'm a guitarist first, 'metalhead' second these days and this album is a riff factory and like you said they can just churn out riffs. Besides the occasional gem released here and there you really can't go wrong sticking to the classics.
Slaughter of the Soul absolutely rips. However my all time favorite AtG song is The Swarm from Terminal Spirit Disease. The new one sure has riffs riffs and more riffs...just a blunted, expensive (late-era Haunted) production that I really wish it didnt have. Maybe I am being a bit too precious? Id give it a try as I have no doubt this will make plenty of those "best of 2014" lists....

Death or Glory

Under Jolly Roger

Probably my top 3. Black Hand Inn and Pile of Skulls up there too.

Blazon Stone the biggest letdown considering it came after Death or Glory.

The Rivalry my favourite of the later stuff. War & Peace! None of the albums after this one have had the same RW feeling or quality.

Whilst I enjoy the first two, most of the pirate stuff is better for me.
The Rivalry is top notch. The Ballad of William Kidd had me hooked the first time I heard it....

Walk the path of sorrow is such a great tune. Covered it for a couple gigs way back and remembered that no lyrics were printed so had to painstakingly listen through and match the shrieks :D
Is your band Brutal Death/Black Metal by any chance? What do you think of Satyricon's latest album? I'm unsure of it myself, prefer their previous albums.

In the last 10 years I've played in black metal, thrash/death, and one straddled some strange line between RAC punk and death metal :D Don't play in anything at the moment though.

Haven't listened to Satyricon's latest, don't even know what it is to be honest. But I genuinely like the split with Enslaved, Dark Medieval Times, Shadowthrone and most of Nemesis Divina. Don't know what possessed me to get Nero. I don't think I even finished it through once lol.

Was thinking your band may have been Belligerent Intent who are from Melbourne and the vocalist/bassist is a Richmond supporter. lol
Good band though and when you can, see them live.

New Blut aus Nord is sensational

Gave the new Ghost Brigade a spin, kind of meh on first listen seemed like there was a good 4 or 5 songs in a row in the middle of the album that were a bit average, will have to listen again. Starts and finishes well though.

New Winterfylleth is great.

Drove to Geelong this afternoon to watch Sinister. Just got back. Decent show and worth catching tomorrow night in Melbourne. Set is mostly lifted from recent albums (which I like) but they opened with Sadistic Intent, one of my favourite tracks. ******* knacked now. Drive killed me.

Went on a massive Megadeth binge yesterday (Rust in Peace through to Risk), and tonight/this morning moved over to some Load and Reload while just chilling out with some video games. You know what, people can bag Metallica for these albums but put another band's name on them and they're really cool hard rock/metal albums. I really enjoy the southern rock sound of tunes like Poor Twisted Me and Ronnie.

So, preparing for some of the most brutal and sick stuff in metal next weekend:

Finally Conqueror live!!!
Be a decent show. Varathron, Root and Nocturnus would be my highlights.

Do you post on the NWN board? I used to until I was banned for laughing at a Sabbat shirt he printed which read 'Cock Hard Records' on the back. YK 'Insulter of Christ' melted - big ******* sook. Had been on there for years, not one warning, nothing. He also banned my mate a few years back when he released an album (can't recall name) which had very strong goth leanings (my mate knew as his girlfriend is into that sort of music). Old mate makes comment along the lines of 'geez wonder if this album will have the usual NWN 'anti-Goth' catalogue number. Opps, banned immediately. Big ******* sook.
