Pick 61 - Luke Lawrence
Pick 61 - GWS
Luke Lawrence
183 cm | ?? kg
MCUE Goannas | GWS Academy | NSW
Midfielder/ General Forward
luke.jpg

Wanted a Key Forward but don't particularly rate the options around here, so thought I'd pump up arguably our best Academy prospect for this year. Lawrence first caught my eye in the NAB League last season against NT, where I had the following to say about him;
#14 Luke Lawrence

The bottom-aged forward target was the go-to man in the attacking half for GWS, with his leading patterns at a high level, he was often well placed inside 50 to follow up with a shot on goal when he held onto the marks – but did have some trouble with holding onto them at times. He worked hard without the ball as well, laying an impressive tackle in the third quarter where he ran 25 metres to lay it, rightfully being rewarded with the free kick. When he had the ball he generally used it well, not looking to do anything flashy, but always what was right for the team.
and once again when assessing the Northern Academy crop coming into 2022
Luke Lawrence Looming as a dangerous midfielder that can rest forward in the future, Lawrence has made the most of his limited appearances in 2021 – including a three-goal haul in his only NAB League appearance. Mostly playing through the midfield through the academy series, Lawrence’s ability to get away from, or around, opponents with his speed and agility is eye catching, while his ability to find the right handball option in close most impressive.

I think Lawrence has a lot of positive attributes, with a high defensive workrate and good agility, he's going to be a danger as either a forward or midfielder in the future. Whilst his disposal can at times be a little wayward, particularly under pressure, for a pick this late I'm more than happy to secure him here.

The only key forward I considered here was Freo NGA's Jasper Scaithe, along with the guys I consider at the last pick and Angus Curry, another Academy lad for us.

So you believe the depth of the draft runs out at this point?

Pick 58 - GWS
Steely Green
178 cm | 70 kg
South Fremantle | WA
Midfielder/ Small Forward

A recent inclusion into the WA U18's hub, Green has been impressive early on in 2022 at WAFL Seniors level for South Fremantle. Green has speed and good skills, particularly when out in space, but what stands out most is his toughness at the contest and willingness to run both ways, despite his slight frame in comparison to his opposition. Whilst he doesn't have much exposed form in the forward 50, I have no doubt he has the attributes to play there at the next level.

The major reason I chose Steely is of course his last name, feels wrong to have a Green on any other list in the league, but I did also seriously consider some similar players (smalls) in Jack O'Sullivan, Kai Windsor and Jaxon Binns, all of whom I believe should've been taken earlier

Davo-27 up next I believe
Damn you, highly doubt he falls this low in the real thing

Pick 62 - Wade Derksen
Pick 62 Geelong - Wade Derksen (195cm, 90kg forward from Peel)

Quick write up while I watch the football. But this pick is for Snuff. 20 year old KPF who moved down from the NT, he’s kicking goals and taking marks. What more can you ask for. I like him.

Billy Dowling from SA was my highest rated player left, #34 overall. I’d have happily taken him. But I’ll change it up and go a mature aged guy.

Pick 63 - Seth Campbell
Pick 63 - Western Bulldogs
Seth Campbell
179cm | 69kg
Tasmania Devils
Forward/midfielder

Finishing out this Dogs draft haul with a guy who'll look hilarious in the photos with three talls. A speedy goal-kicker is a need in the Dogs' forward line, and Campbell's recent 32-disposal, 6-goal haul in the NAB League is hard to look past. Could do much worse with a fourth rounder.

Pick 64 - Coooer Harvey
Pick 64 - North Melbourne
Cooper Harvey
Northern Knights | VIC M
General Forward/ Midfielder

Was never going to be anyone else despite having higher rated players on my board, keep the Harvey legacy at North with a smart and crafty forward

Pick 65 - Luke Michael
Pick 65 (Gold Coast) - Luke Michael (General Defence/Western Australia)

Another excuse to showcase WA talent here, with a player that's somewhere in my top 50, maybe even top 35. Luke Michael is your typical backline general, a lot of plays start with him executing kicks from the backline or taking a nice intercept mark. His skills are clean and his ability to read the play is second to none. In the future Michael provides great leadership and a calm-headed player in the backline. He's one who I'm more hopeful of his chances to get drafted if anything, but I think he offers a lot

Pick 66 - Jasper Scaife
Pick 66: Jasper Scaife
West Perth
Height: 197cm
Forward / Ruck

I think that Freo will be in the market for another tall forward that can also play as a backup ruckman (but I don't think they will want to use an early pick on it unless it is the right value). A Freo NGA, Scaife has been playing colts for two seasons now and has been putting goals on the board fairly consistently, more so than the other player I considered here in Claremont's Luke Brown, however this all feels very speculative and I think I would want to see what happens at the carnival level (if there is anything to see) first.

Pick 68 - Ely Pearce
Pick 68 - Sydney - Eli Pearce
192cm 84kg
Bendigo Pioneers/Vic Country
Medium Forward

Pearce has plenty of upside as a great runner and a clean player able to link up well between the wing and deep forward where he uses his strong running capacity to his advantage.

The contested side of his game needs the most work but I feel he could be a very fine addition to a teams long term best 22 maybe not as an AA type but an important cog in a winning team.

Pick 69 - Nick Madden
Pick 69 Melbourne Nick Madden 204cm 105kg Ruck GWS
massive mountain of a kid who is improving game by game. Ruck work around the ground shows some touch and has the the size to physically compete. He will have trouble with the jumpers at the centre bounce but there are not too many of them. His marking and around the ground play has improved and he is a competitive footballer which I think is a necessary ingredient for any young ruckman to have. I liked that he went forward against Bendigo and kicked two important goals. I remember watching Sean Darcy in his draft year and questioning if his competitiveness would be enough with a perceived lack of athleticism. I get the same vibe with this bloke.
Melbourne would be a great club for madden to land and learn from Gawn and Jackson.
if your name is Madden you are chance to be a pretty good ruckman!
Plays like Sean Darcy

If this kid can improve his athleticism he can be a genuine star AFL ruckman.

How did he fall to your pick? I hope Hawthorn picks him up.

Pick 70 - Finn Emile-Brennan
Pick 70 - Finn Emile-Brennan (General Defence/Victoria)

If Luke Michael is the more clean and composed general of the backline, then Finn Emile-Brennan is the spark that makes the backline more exciting. His long kicks generate quick plays from the backline and like Luke Michael he has a great ability to read the play. The thing that differentiates FEB from other defenders is his ability to take dangerous kicks and make them work. He's an incredibly confident player and has the smarts to know when to take a dangerous kick or take a safer kick down the line. Long term FEB has the potential to be one of the best defenders in this years pool and I'm pretty stoked to get him at 70, given he's another player in that 50-35 range on my draft board right now.

I'll do a full recap of my picks later on, and go over some players I didn't draft but like the look of.

There's still a player in my top 35 left on the board, didn't pick him because he's a defender and we don't need anymore of them. Interested to see whether he gets taken here

I'd really like to see his testing results, just plays a little slow for me.

Pick 72 - Jovan Petric
Pick 72 Melbourne Jovan Petric 196cm 89 kg Key Forward Western Jets

Another big unit for the Demons. Jovan has the right size for a key position forward. His hands are improving and he has a neat kick.
Jovian can find the ball in the forward half and plays with a bit of physicality which I like. I think he would flourish in a professional environment. A natural replacement for Ben Brown who has a tonne of upside

Plays like Mitchell Lewis
