From the updated OP

Well our season ended with a whimper and now we have to endure the inevitable Vic wankfest as Richmond and Geelong face off in a Grand Final but we still must review our year and find out who was the board's most valued player.

The votes have been tallied and we have our winner so over the next few weeks we will countdown who you thought was our best. From the Braydens and Brendons to the Nics and Liams, who will be our winner?

I'll be starting the count mid next week and aim to post a couple of players a day until we get to the Top 10 when it will be one player per day.

Last year Luke Shuey denied Elliot Yeo his threepeat in a nailbiting close finish that was decided by less than a vote, here are the 2019 results:

1. Luke Shuey 38.89
2. Elliot Yeo 38.41
3. Brad Sheppard 35.02
4. Dom Sheed 29.18

6. Andrew Gaff 26.84
7. Shannon Hurn 23.40
8. Liam Ryan 18.16

11. Willie Rioli 12.06
12. Jamie Cripps 11.70
13. Tom Hickey 11.37
14. Jack Redden 9.02
15. Jeremy McGovern 8.68
16. Tom Barrass 7.51
17. Nic Naitanui 6.76

Before we get started on the actual count, here are the players that failed to play a game in 2020:

18. Daniel Venables
Did not play in any capacity this season and there are fears for his future in the game after suffering a nasty concussion last season.

19. Nathan Vardy
Had another year in the wilderness where he suffered from injury and form which sidelined him all season.

26. Francis Watson
Sadly tore his ACL at training this year and due to shortened lists may struggle to keep his spot on the list for 2021.

38. Ben Johnson
Had a bad case of Partington's Disease this year and was pretty anonymous all season, mostly due to injury as he didn't get much scrimmage time.

40. Callum Jamieson
Our beanpole project ruck had a development year in his first season and was never really close to a senior birth. Spent time all over the ground due to the limited players available for scrimmages and should be good for the experience. Long term prospect.

43. Anthony Treacy
Didn't even manage to cop an emergency spot this season despite all our small forwards being broken so you would think he may struggle to get a list spot in 2021.

44. Willie Rioli
We all know the story here, as does hungrytiger.

45. Mitch O'Neill
Highly rated by this board, Mitch had a stress back injury this season and spent most of the year at home in Tasmania in rehab. Returned to the club and looked in good shape so hopefully he gets another go at it next year and beyond.

Players who played but did not score a vote will be tomorrow before the actual count starts on Wednesday.

Struggled this year due to injury and form as well as not being able to develop/return from injury in the WAFL. Only kicked the 2 goals for the year and his best game probably came v St Kilda where he recorded 11 disposals. Signed a 3 year deal at the end of the season.

Only played the 1 game this year when we were severely undermanned against St Kilda. Didn't show a whole heap as he was played out of position as a forward but you would suspect he will be moved on at the end of the year.

The big fella showed some promising signs in his first 3 games of his career. A powerful leap and strong set of hands shows he has the tools to be an excellent ruckman for us for many years to come. Kicked his first career goal against Essendon which was pretty tasty.

Never really looked like reaching the heights of his debut season this year after missing the preseason due to OP. He struggled to move around the ground and only managed to kick 2 goals. Hopefully an injury free preseason allows him to have another crack at a small forward spot.

Looked promising in his singular game for the year before concussion ended his day early. Harry would be excited to have another go next year as with Schofield retiring, he would be next in line for a game behind Gov and TB.

#46 Nic Reid

Huge effort to play AFL footy after being in the amateurs not too long ago. Reid struggled with the pace at the top level but he was good for pressure and managed to kick a snag courtesy of Darling. Uncontracted for next year and unlikely to be retained.

The big man only played 3 games this year and the first 2 (vs Melbourne before the shutdown and Port in that disastrous first hub) he was tried as the number 2 to Nic. This obviously didn't work at all so he was sent back to the scrimmages for the rest of the year apart from the Bulldogs game where he came in to spell NN. This Bulldogs game was statistically his best game where he knocked up 28 hitouts. Achieved his only vote for the season in Round 4 v Port where hudson2006 awarded him with 1.

Skinny X was one of the shining lights this year in terms of youngsters. Debuting in Round 13 vs GWS, Xavier played every game in the condensed fixture before losing his spot for the final H&A game of the season. His quick hands and neat footskills coupled with his apparent footy smarts got him a 1 year extension and there is hope that we have got ourselves a keeper here. His best game came in Round 14 vs Richmond where he recorded 16 disposals and 4 marks.

Despite being officially crowned the new BF whipping boy, Ainsworth managed 9 games including the final in his 3rd season of AFL footy. It seemed throughout the season that he was the first choice as a backup mid/HF and performed admirably in that tagging role. Brayden's best statistical game of the season came in the derby in Round 7 where he recorded 12 disposals and 7 marks.

A fall from grace for the premiership defender in 2020. Jetta started the year in the side and played the first 4 rounds of the season before being dropped and not recalled until rounds 15 and 16. A calf injury sustained in the Round 16 game vs the Bulldogs sidelined him for the rest of the H&A season and he was unable to regain his spot for the Elimination Final. Currently sits in limbo without a contract for 2021 and his fate probably depends on list sizes for 2021. Would be a sad way for the champion to go out if he is delisted this season. His best game came in Round 1 vs Melbourne where he recorded 18 disposals and kicked a goal and looked primed for a big year before the shutdown.

Two promising games from one of the last additions to our list in the offseason. Jones was delisted from Geelong in 2019 and picked up by us in the SSP. He played in the first QLD hub in the Round 4 v Port and Round 5 v Swans game and provided good pressure (laid 8 tackles in his two games) and skills during our small forward crisis. A hamstring injury in the Swans game ended his year early and remains uncontracted for next season but as he seems to have survived the first list cull, hopefully he gets another gig next year. Promising young player. Should have finished in the Top 10 (obligatory sponsor post).

A down year as a whole for the premiership forward. Cripps started the year in poor form; despite playing the first 14 rounds, he only received votes in Rounds 9 and 13 before he left the second hub to be home for the birth of his child. Cripps returned for the Elimination Final and was one of our best where he received 0.59 of his 0.66 votes and had 17 disposals which was his highest tally for the year. Only kicked multiple goals once this season when he had 2 against Sydney in Round 5.

Some good games and some not so good games for Jarrod this year. The wingman experiment was in full swing for him in 2020 and whether that was a success or will even be continued is up in the air. He played the first 4 games of the season which shows the club wants him in the side but was dropped after the Round 4 loss to the Power. Returned for a stint towards the end of the season where he played Round 12-14 as well as Round 17. Statistically his best game came in Round 13 v GWS where he recorded 16 disposals. Ranks 3rd in the competition amongst rising stars for Marks per Game.

The great man has retired. A champion of the football club and of the sledging community, Schoey hung up the boots at the end of a season where he only managed 4 games. The premiership defender played Rounds 3 and 4 vs the Lions and Port before a suspension caused him to lose his spot. He returned in Round 17 v the Saints and kept his spot for Round 18 v North. Wasn't selected in the Elimination Final in favour of a returning McGovern and there are arguments that he should have played. Regardless, Schoey retires a premiership player and a reliable 1on1 defender capable of a great dash out of defence. Congrats on the career Schoey!

A first choice forward line player in 2020, Ah Chee played 16 games which is the most of his career. He showed flashes of a good footballer but often his work-rate or skills would let him down. Kicked 2 goals v GWS in to go with his 5 marks and had 16 disposals against Sydney in what was ultimately a hold and cold year (mostly cold if we are being honest, he only received votes in 3 of his 16 games) for the former Port Adelaide player. Currently sits on the Rookie List so it is uncertain whether he goes around again in 2021.

Total votes - 2.01

Ranking - 20th

Games played - 10

2020 was a good year for Rotham. He cemented his spot in the backline in the back half of the year where he played every game from Round 11 before missing the Elimination Final due to injury. He recorded a season disposal high of 16 disposals against GWS in Round 13 as well as 11 marks. Looks to be firmly entrenched in the best 22 for next season as a reliable mid size defender.
