No, the Europa League is like an extended League Cup run. Would much rather concentrate exclusively on the League as it would give us a big advantage over both City and Liverpool in the top 4 race next year.

and seriously, why does everybody whinge about Gomes? He's in poor form but he doesn't make these mistakes all the time. Being our best player toward the end of last year should be enough to secure him the #1 spot for us next season. Focusing on a new GK is also something we absolutely shouldn't do when our best striker is Jermain Defoe.

and Kranjcar wouldn't be whiny if Harry gave him the oppertunity to play more, which he never does unless we're loaded with injuries and he's our last option. Sure, he's off now, although I'd much rather see Pienaar or Defoe go rather than him.

No to Europa.

LOL @ Gomes doesn't make these mistakes all the time. No he just makes them 66% of the time (2 out of 3 seasons).

Agree on Niko, Pienaar and Defoe. Defoe scoring recently has ensured we are stuck with him next season :(

Gomes has to go. We don't need someone who can make miracle saves. We just need a dependable keeper.

I'm surprised Redknapp and the senior players were so diplomatic about the blatant favouritism on the weekend. If we won, we would only be 4 points behind City. Hypothetically, if City drop points at Everton (likely) and we beat Blackpool (at home), we could go to Eastlands needing a win to get 4th spot. I'd love to know the last time a lucky decision went our way in a big match.

You qualify if your 5th or 6th for Europa like Mac City and Liverpool. Or am i missing on something?
I'm not 100% sure, but:

Stoke win the cup - Birmingham, Stoke and 5th place
City win the cup and finish top 4 - Birmingham, Stoke and 5th place
City win the cup and finish outside top 4 - Birmingham, 5th place and 6th place

What can you do? Genuine mistakes both of them fairly understandable ones IMO (offside non decision worse than the goalline one IMO). And you got the benefit of your own goalline decision against Stoke earlier in the year, Crouch chesting it off the line when he was a good foot off line to start with.

Read a piece in the Guardian saying FIFA may start testing video technology by the 2012/2013 season. If it's not done by then, I might start to lose interest in football. It's a farce that so many big matches are decided by poor officiating.

The decisions were not understandable IMO. I think its a case of the referee/linesmen buckling under the pressure. Stamford Bridge is an intimidating venue. I'm sure the England captain, Lampard, Cole etc put unnecessary pressure on the officials. Had the match been against Wigan at WHL, I'm not sure we would have lost 2-1.

How is the Lampard goal a genuine mistake? He made a judgement call without having the evidence, he wasn't in a position to be nodding his head like a wanker saying it was a goal. No wonder the plodder has been dropped from officiating this week.

moomba is smug because his club will be playing in the CL next season after spending enough money to feed the entire third world. It's a shame tin pot clubs like City and Chelsea will be playing CL but that's the way football is headed

FWIW, every Chelsea fan I've spoken to admits we were robbed. The match cost us a top 4 spot and will probably win Chelsea the title.

Tin pot eh? Thats a new one. Hopefully when when we've played in the champions league for a whole one season in a row like you we won't look down our noses at other clubs.

It must be abit embarrassing for that for all your grandness and importance in the game that you've only managed the same number of titles as little tin pot City and have managed two less than little tin pot Chelsea.

I feel for you.

FWIW, every Chelsea fan I've spoken to admits we were robbed. The match cost us a top 4 spot and will probably win Chelsea the title.
I've never said that the decision was correct, just that I can understand why a linesman could see what he would have seen, and make the decision that the ball was over the line. From that angle it will always involve an element of guesswork, and he would have been crucified if he disallowed a goal that was a few mm over the line. For me the offside was a worse decision (not sure if same lino) as there was no reason why he shouldn't have spotted the man in the offside position.

But it didn't cost you a top 4 spot, just as the disallowed Stoke goal that was a good foot over the line against you earlier in the season didn't win you a top 4 spot.

If you had beat Chelsea (no guarantee) you still would have been 4 points back with 4 matches to go, 2 of which you will be expected to drop points in.

Starting to get extremely worried now.

Bale, VDV, Modric etc have been on song with their delivery today and yet, our best effort came from a Michael Dawson effort from outside the box. Jermain Defoe is, yet again, awful. Pavlyuchenko isn't as bad as he was against Chelsea, but still pretty shit. Absolutely no clue why Crouch isn't starting, he's been our best striker all year (even though he doesn't score much, he provides a lot of support to midfielders).

With that said, there at least have been some nice positives. Danny Rose at left back looks like a work of genius (funny, considering Harry's in charge). Looks very comfortable and unlike BAE, possesses plenty of pace and makes a lot of runs. Wouldn't mind seeing him there next season.

The ref has been shit but there's still no excuse. If we can't win against Blackpool at WHL, we can forget about winning anything next season.

I'm having a hard enough time with the Bulldogs in the AFL, the last thing I need is more of this shit but of course, all of it was due to happen.

Watching both replays, both penalties may have been there (Both 50/50 calls) but they were still ****ing soft, and it still shits me how the Spurs whinge brigade will be on here to bash Gomes in a matter of time.

Charlie Adam is a dirty prick and I hope he really does go to Liverpool, just so he can rot on the bench.

Only positives coming out of today were Modric, Sandro and Danny Rose. Modric especially. He's one of the best players in the world at the moment.

Seeing as Harry will be in charge next season, it's gonna be a long 24 months...

And Moombas Spurs hatred resurfaces again. He just couldnt resist to come on here and gloat could he, and at the same time rub our noses in it. Showing some real class there. I got a red card for less.

I could say something about you having unlimited millions and owners that have so much disregard for transfer fees and salaries that they have forced UEFA into making rule changes. But I wont. I'll leave it to you to act the big man.

Who was gloating? I offered an opinion about a decision, which I thought was an incorrect one. Anything else was just responding to posters who didn't like my opinion on the decision.

I don't think you guys were robbed v Chelsea. Sure, the first goal for them was poor. Taking that away Chelsea were denied a stonewall penalty for a foul on Malouda. And the second goal was not offside. Kalou was offside in the buildup to the goal however it was a passive offside situation.

It's unusual that he spends so much time on the Spurs thread. He ****ed off before but had to come back to fuel his obsession. I've noticed a sudden increase in the activity of the City thread. Interesting.

Onto the game... I think everyone saw that coming. Harry has lost the players. Pretty obvious there is a rift between Harry and Lennon from the Real Madrid disaster. If that's the case, we can get good money for Lennon and hopefully wont have to sell Bale or Modric. Pav clearly doesn't want to be here either.

And Blackpool are ****ing scum. Disgusting football club that will hopefully go down this season. Taylor-Fletcher did a textbook dive for the penalty. He was already on the way down before Gomes touched him. Most of their x-rated tackles went unpunished by Lee Probert.

We were robbed. Again.

Is 6th good enough for Europe?
It is looking that way for spurs this season. They can overtake Liverpool if they beat them in the last game but I don't like their chances with the way they are playing.

Next season they must buy two new strikers if they are going to challenge for top four again.

6th won't get you a Europa spot, Stoke will get it for playing in the FA Cup final which makes Sunday's clash even more important

Again, why the heck do people want to be in the Europa League?

CL should be the top priority and to get that next season, we're far better off without having to worry about European Games, which are like an extended Carling Cup run.

Not even gonna bother watching the Liverpool game. We have nothing left to achieve this season.

I reckon theres a number of reasons why. Gives young and squad players an opportunity to experience different teams, different styles of football and different away trips. That can only help if/when you do get back to the chimps.

It's great for the fans, especially European aways.

It's a chance of silverware.

It's more money for the club, important with FIFA rules nowadays.

No Europe hurts your UEFA co-efficient for five years, so if/when you do make it, you might have a tougher route to go through.

All these apply to a very small extent.

The financial benefits aren't that great at all. Adding to that, it hurts our key priority for next season, which will be making the Champions League again, which we have a big opportunity to do, as the competition, your lot and Liverpool, will be traveling all over the world for tough away games.

As if that isn't bad enough, you could be put in the same group as a team like Rubin or Shakhtar or some other Russian/Scandinavian team, which can kill your momentum in the league.
