How is Port Adelaide vs Adelaide not winning this?

Its probably the biggest professional sporting rivalry in the world apart from Celtic vs Rangers.

Those saying that the showdown isn't the biggest should perhaps go to a showdown. I'm sure their opinion would change very quickly.

Until the line in the sand game... the only game that generated any type of melees were the Carlton and Collingwood game and the Freo and West Coast game from when they started going nuts on policing it..

I agree with Carlton/Collingwood but what are you trying to say here?

How is Port Adelaide vs Adelaide not winning this?

Probably because of time is my guess. I know you'll say it's been going on forever but most people voting here don't give a shit about the SANFL. There's no doubt you hate each other year round and have a great rivarly though.

That's not entirely true. Port dominated the SANFL for 126 years before getting the license to play in the AFL. We were completely hated. Imagine if Collingwood had won flag after flag over the past 50 years. That's how hated we were.

The Crows were basically an amalgamation of people from all the other clubs. That hate carried over big time. Not to mention the 1990 issue with the Crows being created to keep Port out of the AFL and all the ill feeling that came with that.

well, that's not entirely true either. as far as i'm concerned, port power's history began when you entered the AFL.

yes, the port adelaide ppl went to the power and the others went to the crows, but they are still basically two new clubs.

carlton and collingwood have existed in their current form for over 100 years.

the carl vs coll rivalry has suffered of late due to carlton's decline in the 00's. if both clubs start to face off in finals, the crows vs port rivalry will pale by comparison.

The only CURRENT rivalry with a bit of spite is Essendon and Hawthorn..
Adelaide and Port would be up there but ive never been in adelaide for the game so i couldnt really say..
Collingwood v Carlton.. pfft.. when was the last time that game fired a shot worth talking about....

To be honest the Essendon Hawthorn rivalry hasn't been truly alive for 25 years. Derm tries his best to pump it up now and again, but it barely exists anymore.

Geelong are our biggest rivals at the moment.

Ill just add that over the history of the game carlton and collingwood have a rivalry, just not really over the last 10-15 years with collingwood and carlton both being celler dwellars at different times over the period.

Because no-one outside Adelaide cares.

Collingwood v Carlton for mine, 100+ years of hatred between the two clubs.

Its not meant to be based on whether people in victoria care. If someone were to ask what the biggest rivalry in soccer was, and you were to say Melbourne victory and Melbourne heart, you would clearly be wrong.

The fact is that there are over 100 years of history between Adelaide and Port Adelaide. Not directly between the two clubs, but between the supporter bases.

Even not taking that into account, I think you would find that the hatred between Adelaide and Port Adelaide supporters far surpasses that of any other two club combination. The fact that Adelaide supporters refused to go to the second showdown so that they wouldn't give money to Port Adelaide is very defining of this.

I'd also like to include the story of Brad Symes. Whos mother barracked against Port Adelaide in the 2007 Grand final. He was promptly traded to Adelaide the next year. I've never heard of anything like this with Collingwood and Carlton in the last 10 years.

The rivalry stems from the hatred between fans and the fans have hated what the other represents for a lot longer than the Crows have existed. The Adelaide/Port rivalry is an extension of the SANFL v Port hatred that has existed for decades.

No doubting Collingwood and Carlton are great rivals, but that rivalry is diluted because you have so many other rivals in Victoria. You'd never understand the intensity of a rivalry in a two team town.

Port had a few rivals in Norwood, Sturt, Glenelg and others, and those rivals basically amalgamated to form a new club purely to best Port Adelaide's attempt to join the emerging national competition in the VFL.

collingwood v carlton. all other teams pray for a rivalry like ours.

Can't believe West Coast v Essendon doesn't even rate a mention. The JACKET WAVING PHENOMENON PEOPLE!!!!

Paul Salmon made me cry at the G' TWICE in the early nineties.

Sheedy's 'finger across the throat' gesture

Hird's goal and then hug of some random bloke in the crowd

Peter Matera's 7 goals at the G'

The game at the Dome in 07' when Juddy first got injured and we went down by a point.

Essendon and West Coast Fans back me up on this. Surely it rates a mention.

The problem is most east coasters kinda like the eagles. Eagles fans think that everyone in the east hates them to death but the reality is that most of us don't care... Sorry

Fos Williams a very long time ago took my Dad to Port games when he was coaching, I know from my Dad how much hatred between Port and Adelaide exists.
It is HUGE

So wait, most east coasters (Melbourne is not on the east coast btw) kind of like the Eagles. But nobody cares??

Having lived in both states I can say there is very little love from both friends, family, people I have met, at games or in the media for WC.

In fact the national competition which we helped build was stacked against the Eagles from day 1 (though mostly this has changed).

And there has certainly been a fair bit of emnity and angst expressed in the Vic media and by the Vic footballing public since our early days. Comes with success.

The Essendon "rivalry" whilst not big, certainly added heat and interest to our encounters over the years and the Sydney rivalry (actually on the east coast) was a hard fought one and almost always entertaining.

Posting about how little anyone cares, smacks of a churlishness which almost certainly indicates you do care, or dislike WC enough to make the jibe.

Here's a friendly suggestion, buy a plain ticket to Buenos Aires and go see a Boca Juniors v Riverplate match, now that's a ******* rivalry!!!!!

Just curious, but have you yourself been to a Carlton v Collingwood match at the G?

Yea forgot those guys. Real vs Barca etc are also pretty insane.

And no I haven't, but my old man has, and hes pretty certain that Adelaide vs Port Adelaide is the worst hes seen by a long way.

Fitzroy and Collingwood.
Melbourne and Collingwood.

The word "rivalry" has friendly competitive connotations.

North and Essendon despise each other. Pure hatred.

Wha?

Dude I think that hatred might be one way......

Ok so you yourself have never been to a Carlton v Collingwood game yet are telling people to go to a Power v Crows match because its the ultimate, funny that..... Carlton v Collingwood has lost a bit due mainly to the fact that it lost the suburban element in the early 90's. If the games were played at a ground that holds a similar amount to AAMI instead of at the G it would be intense to say the least and would IMO certainly outstrip the showdown.

From the Essendon wiki page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Melbourne
North Melbourne – A rivalry that first began over supporter boundaries, and then over Essendon's thwarting North Melbourne's final hopes in the 1950s, this would spill over again in the 1990s. Many Essendon supporters believed[citation needed] the outcome of North Melbourne's 1996 and 1999 Premierships would have been much different had the Bombers managed to win the Preliminary Finals in each of those years. Coach Kevin Sheedy's famous 'Marshmallow War' jibe only served to strengthen the rivalry. The Bombers managed to get the upper hand in the rivalry for a while with their famous comeback in Round 16 of the 2001 season where, trailing by 69 points halfway through the second quarter, the Bombers came back hard, scoring a flurry of goals to eventually win by 12 points. The Bombers didn't beat the Kangaroos again until Round 1, 2008 when they came back from 27 points down in second quarter to win by 55 points. Essendon won the most recent match by just three points, in round 17, 2010.

A sanitised view, but a correct one nonetheless.

From the North wiki page:
Essendon – North and Essendon have a chequered history that dates back to the late 19th century. Firstly in 1896, Essendon had North excluded from the VFL, because both clubs drew supporters from the same area. Later on in 1922, Essendon stole the cream of North's squad after the two clubs went through a failed merger. To add insult to the rivalry, when North was accepted to the VFL in 1925, North were forced to cede all of their neighbouring recruiting territory to Essendon.

North supporters have long been bitter with Essendon for excluding them from the VFL, and have blamed that for their small supporter base in comparison to Essendon's.

North's first VFL Grand Final was against Essendon in 1950. Although Essendon were the victors, North won the casualty count in a torrid enagement.

The rivalry was reignited in the 90s, and in 1998 some North fans decided to inform Essendon of their softness by throwing marshmallows at coach Kevin Sheedy.

North Melbourne's Grand Final victories in 1996 and 1999 have both came against opponents that had defeated Essendon by a point in the preliminary final.

I also lived both sides of the country (Canberra and Perth) and that is why I comment. Victorians don't like South Australians, but like I said from the people I know have a kind of arms length respect for the Eagles. For a long time they were my 2nd Fave team (Freo is now). Your insight of care is somewhat accurate however as I used to pissed when I lived in Perth and (especially eagles) supporters talked about how everyone in Vic hates them unfair this unfair that. For the first 10 years of the existence the eagles were basically a state of origin side tell me how that is unfair.
