Re: The Crowd

attendance for this game is the first above 25,000 since the Hickey stand was put in place and completed in 2005, when it was apparantely meant to be a 28,000 capacity.

I'd be willing to put a fair amount of money on it that we dont see an attendance there over 30,000 until the completion of the next redevelopment phase, whenever that is.

When we played the Dogs there in 2008 EVERYONE wanted a ticket to that and that was sold out for days leading up.....24,801 turned up. 3200 short of capacity for a game where scalpers would've cleaned up! looking around i couldnt see many empty seats, that definitely makes you think, and there is the resell option for members who can not make it as well

I guess, like someone already mentioned, it must be those empty scattered seats that are hard to see from afar and on TV that is the case.
Would there'd be a reason why the club would need to fib about the capacity???
i cant think of one off the top of my head but then again how often do you see 55k at Etihad or 100k at the MCG(obviously post Great Southern Stand days)??
Etihad = NONE (Once for soccer GF, not this years one)
MCG = Once (2008 GF)

It is very hard to get a 'full house' in this day and age of memberships (club, AFL, MCC, Medallion Club etc.), as a large proportion of seats or tickets (even the majority at Skilled Stadium) are reserved from the start of the season. So the tickets have been paid for and it is within the rights of the ticketholder to not turn up if they so desire.

Basically everything has to be perfect to get a full house or close to it, including the size of the two teams' supporter bases, their form and the weather (see 2008 Grand Final, 2009 Round 14 St Kilda v Geelong). I have heard that I think the total capacity of the MCG is 100,019, so only seven extras could have officially fit in that day.

On the topic of Skilled Stadium, I think a few thousand extra could have fit into standing room on Sunday. Add to this the empty seats, and maybe 28,000 now is a realistic possibility, on a dry day against a decent Victorian team. However I think when the capacity was previously listed at 28,000 or 27,300 it was being slightly generous.

i would certaintly hope 28,000 is now achievable.
interestingly enough this game was 1 of only 2 in the past 4 years i havent been able to make it to so couldnt judge for myself how "full" the place was
your right about the season ticket holders, i guess i just wish people would resell there spot to give others the oppotunity to go. It happens to two seats in front of me every second week. Personally its great because its a clearer view but others would love to have those seats in the 2nd row.

Biggest Crowd at Skilled for 9 years!

The crowd against Port Adelaide on Sunday was the biggest Crowd at Skilled Stadium (Kardina Park) for 9 years.

The last time we had a crowd of over 25,000 was against Richmond in Round 9 in 2001. The Crowd then was 27,421.

The big question is can that crowd be beaten this year. I know our capacity is meant to be 30,000 but I think it will be closer to 27,000 so I think it will be tough to beat. I think we may have to wait for the next development before we can beat that figure.

If Melbourne keep their form going, we will probably surpass that 2001 attendance figure when we play them at Skilled in Round 10.

Standing room was not completely full on Sunday and Port fans don't travel well so we'd have to be some chance of breaking that this season.

I think we will get a fairly good idea of our Capacity next week when we play Richmond. They get probably get the best support out of all the teams that travel to Geelong these days. I think the biggest crowd we could now get would be around 27-28k.

Was that the day King kicked four in the last quarter? The place was going off.

Is there a relationship between attendances and money's paid from attendances to the AFL for distribution?
I'm sure there would be a way to publish Members & Public attendance's , after all we are all treated like groceries when we go thru the gates but would it be in anyones interest to do so?

In the end , as long as the club makes an improved profit from their new stands I'm not going to lose sleep over the official attendance. One would have to wonder if and when we got the big World Cup Upgrade , the attendance would have to be documented in someway because its a must to sit the 44,000. I'm hoping we get the WC (massive long shot Id say) because being Wade Stand seatholder I don't think I will live to see that stand upgraded otherwise.

I reckon we will get a bigger indication of how many the ground can actually fit the following week when we play the Swans who are always well supported in VIC, plus there is also a chance that both teams could be 5-1 which would make it match of the round too!
