Who would it be? I know people will probably nominate GWS, but I can't help but feel it's either Collingwood or Hawthorn.

I don't think there is one, I think the strongest negative feelings by Swans fans are probably about Hawthorn and Collingwood, but a good amount of that is toxic off-field stuff, and clearly neither of them are rivalries.

I think it's just more generally Victoria.

It seems to have changed over time.

In the '90s, probably North Melbourne.

In the 2000s, I'd say West Coast. Two consecutive grand finals in '05 and '06.

In the 2010s, Hawthorn. Again, two consecutive grand finals plus Buddy.

As GWS has grown stronger, the Giants.

And right now? Maybe Brisbane or Geelong?

They used to have the world's most boring rivalry with St Kilda. Some absolute stinkers at Docklands.

Just an epic showdown of defensive coaching and inaccurate kicking.

I'd still suggest they played the Worst Half Ever Played. 1.4 (10) to 1.2 (8) under the roof at half time.

It's Carlton from the Bloodbath Grand Final to trying to fold us as a club in the 90's everything else is just a moment in time.
This is absolutely the historically correct answer.

Carlton being absolute shit for the last thirty years would no doubt have softened it though.

Hawks for sure. Some epic battles both in MCG and SCG. Plus the whole Buddy thing of which was OK as we won 2 more GFs and Buddy none after leaving.
Add to that we still need some pay back for 2012 of which 2014 was not enough.
Hawks bad kicking cost us. Need to beat them again on big stage to avenge that sour day.

I'd say I hated Hawthorn with a passion until they fell off a cliff for the last ten years. But since they're back with Mitchell as coach I'm sure the hatred will grow again. If rivalries are based on hatred then it's probably Hawthorn for mine.

For some reason our games against Essendon have always been rather heated. Again, since they've been crap for 20 years the passion isn't really there for me. But there always seems to be an incident that occurs that sparks it up again (Rampe goal post. Mcveigh being ten metres out of bounds). And famous finishes. (Rohans goal. Plugger point.) Etc.

Collingwood? Meh.

Historically Carlton due to reasons listed above. StKilda we were the battle for the spooners for a long time and the proximity of the Lakeside oval with Junction Oval.

West Coast had potential but fizzled out.

Gws mean nothing to me yet. As much as they try.

GWS are like an annoying neighbour who moves down the street and tries desperately to get attention. Most Swans fans just kind of ignore them more than anything.

I'd say maybe Hawthorn. GWS is an obvious candidate, though as others have said it's mostly a one-way thing at this stage.

The reality is there aren't really any major rivalries that cross state borders. If you listed the top 10 in the league, it would probably be made up of various 'big 4' match ups, the WA and SA derbies, and Hawthorn v Geelong. Beyond this you get grudge matches that lose relevance after a little while. e.g. we've had temporary rivalries with West Coast, North Melbourne, Essendon and the Bulldogs at various points.
