This Saturday the tigers aim to win their first flag in 37 years, they finished 13th last year. I know the pies finished last in 1976(12th) and were runners up in 1977 however if the tigers win on Saturday will that be the greatest single season improvement in the history of the game?

I'd say that Brisbane Lions from the end of 1998 to 1999 would be a bigger improvement than Richmond this year.

They finished 16th in wooden spoon position with a percentage of 75.8% (5-1-16) in 1998.
They then leaped to 3rd in 1999 with a record of 16-6 (10.5 more wins) and a percentage of 144.9%, an increase of just 69.1%. They made the PF that year too.

Perhaps wait until the Grand Final is over first before claiming this.

To answer the question, there have been 4 instances recently of teams improving 12 positions on the ladder (which Richmond will equal IF they win on Saturday):

- Bulldogs- 1996 (15th) - 1997 (3rd)
- Brisbane- 1998 (16th) - 1999 (4th)
- Melbourne - 1999 (14th) - 2000 (2nd)
- West Coast- 2010 (16th) - 2011 (4th)

Richmond also won 8 games last year, 18 this year IF they win on the weekend for a possible improvement of 10 wins across 2 seasons. West Coast improved by 14 wins in 2011, Brisbane by 13 in 1999, the Bulldogs 11 in 1997 and Melbourne 10 in 2000.
