Biglands confirmed as needing knee recon

In Hudson you have a #1 ruckman, and that is fine.

All of you expecting Meesen to come through are dreaming. Young big blokes like him take 3-4 years to reach a level where they can play AFL consistenly. Maric will have to be your second ruckman, and I think he can do the job, but if either he or Meesen get injured, then you are in hot water.

See at Melbourne, even though Jamar was inexperienced, he has had 3-4 years in the system. Meesen has had one. He will not make much of an impact next year.

Spider Everitt or Michael Gardiner anyone ??

Meesen and Maric have both been in the system for two years.

They will probably share the duties next year, with Hudson in the lead role.

Yeah he is playing SANFL finals at the moment for North Adelaide.
He will be fit and firing next year.
Brownlow medal chance........

The Crows should pull Hudson out of the SANFL finals. No point in risking an injury now the Crows are out of contention and given the injury to Biglands and possible retirement of Clarke. It would also allow O'Hara to play league.

1. You're right, Hudson will be our #1 ruckman in 2007.

2. And you've seen Meesen play how many times exactly?

3. Meesen and Maric have each had 2 years in the system.

4. Unless you've seen these guys play on a consistent basis, and if you can’t get your facts straight, don’t bother posting.

Glengowan, you arent nervous are ya? ;)

Im a little surprised he hasnt been pulled out actually, but we desperately need him. They really should take Knights and Skippy out (so he cant kick 6 ****ing goals against us again!!)

Back on topic, tough beak for the lad. Its bad enough to do a knee but to do it at the end of the year means he will miss the whole of next season which is a bummer :( :thumbsd:

For those people who are suggesting that we get rid of Biglands now, let me paint you a little picture that you all seem to forget. He just signed a new 2 year contract which means that whether you cut him or keep him you still have to pay him that money AND its included in the salary cap either way.

Now, lets also not forget that we are very close to the salary cap limit and there is not a lot of room to move. To cut a player supposedly to get someone else on the list will make that breathing space even tighter. Now take into account that Biglands did his knee while playing for the Crows. That means that he will be not only receiving his base salary but match payments as well. Cut him now and you are paying him as if he played every single game from now until the end of 2008 season. Add that to another 22 players that play every week, as well as salary for the new player and chances are you would be pushing your luck.

That’s not completely true; if Rhett agrees to retire the Adelaide Football club and Rhett Biglands can negotiate a termination package under section 12.3 of the CBA and once a player has retired under his own free will the payment will not be counted as part of the salary cap.

Drummond I know you're just sticking up for your man Meesen, but OWtS made a reasonable point.

If we go in with Maric or Meesen as a backup to Huddo, we're going to get some very inconsistent performances out of them. They've both got much potential, but history will show that there's not too many 21 year old ruckmen that make much on an impact at AFL level. They're generally just not ready at that age.

I really think Clarke has to stay on now. If he doesn't and Huddo goes down again, we are screwed big style.

Clarkey was just on Ten. I'd bet he's still gonna leave.

The guy is an absolute champion. I hope he stays in football, in the media or at a club.

is it better to risk inconsistent performances from developing players OR risk them getting p.ssed orf and leaving?

Some people love to shoot off the hip just for the sake of it, but there is a hell of a lot to list management than most think. Biglands will NOT be cut and neither should he be. Not only does it send an incredibly shocking message to every possible AFC recruit now and in the future but it sends bad message to the players who are currently on the list. Add to that the remifications it will have on the salary cap and there is much more value to holding onto a player than there is to cut him.

Well said Stiff, spot on. I can't believe people would even suggest delisting him.

This phobia of players leaving is really getting out of hand with some people. Lets put it this way, I would rather win a permiership and have both Meesen and Maric leave than play them both at the same time out of fear of losing them and struggle to make the 8.

I don't know why everyone is so nervous about Huddo, Meese & Maric being our 3 key ruckmen. Melbourne pretty much made the whole year with 2.

Good luck Swayze!
I wouldn't be so nervous if Huddo wasn't coming back from a knee injury ... as how often do players have a 2nd knee injury! If Huddo went down with another LT injury & we were left with Mx2 to carry the rucks, we could be in strife.

I would prefer we keep Clarke on for another year, but as insurance for Huddo - not to get in the way of the development of Mx2. Give him a mentoring/coaching role.

Best of luck to Biglands. Hope the op & rehab go smoothly.

We are effectively starting 2 men short next year. There should be a rule whereby we can put players on a LT injury list for a whole year & replace them for that year either be a player on the full list (& then have to delist extra players the following year when they return).

Biglands Injury - A Blessing In Disguise ?

Had Biglands not gone down and shared the Ruck duties with Huddo next year is it possible that we would've lost both Meesen and Maric and been left with no potential future ruckman ?

When Biglands went down obvioulsy the first thing you think..Is it serious!!
To all the Eagles supporters out there who say they are all well mannered etc...Every one of the people I was watching the game with (About 8 and ALL Eagles supporters) said..YEAH, hope he's done it serious or all similar comments...F*N TOSSERS!!
I'd never wish that on a player!!

The AFC has a dilemma......I believe it is seriously considering Michael Gardiner.

Why

There are serious doubts about his ability to ruck on his dodgy knee, and he's been far from convincing as a forward.

Let's crystal ball this.....Gardiner (27 years) joins Hudson (28 years) with Maric and Meesen as backup with one of the latter 2 being groomed for a KP......sounds OK to me

Now year 2 and Biglands is back, Hudson and Gardiner makes 3 what I would call primary ruckmen........where does that leave Maric & Meesen coming off one year contracts.

As I said a real dilemma recruit for now or plan for the longterm.....Adelaide unfortunately under Blight & Ayres has always only thought about this season.....Craig promised better list management and a commitment to youth. .....no evidence for me in this scenario.

Wouldn't it be better to recruit a key forward who can relieve in the ruck rather than a ruckman that is going to block our futures pathway and who is yet to demonstrate he can play forward with any sort of agility of forwards thinking.....

Sorry this is really upsetting

I agree. 2007 will show us if Craigy really meant this or just more coach-speak.

phobia? it is quite simply facing reality about our future ruck stocks which some people are missing. if clarke stays on then it sends a crystal clear message to maric and meesen ... "we dont think you are good enough yet!"

i mean come on these players arent stupid, they know they have short careers and if one club wont give them a chance then they will look elsewhere. i somehow doubt there'd be a shortage of clubs wanting either of them. also biglands will prolly be back in 2008 when they start talking contracts again.

ofcourse they may not leave but you are taking a big risk with our best two young ruckmen for 1 year of clarke. its not worth it.

Didn't Craig spruik just last week that we had to fast track our younger players development ......well his first chance to "walk the walk" just goes down the gurgler if he chases Gardiner or another Ruckman.

Now I don't mind if Clarke stays on under the understanding he plays mostly in the SANFL and will only be called upon after Maric & Meesen......Something BTW I doubt he would want to go thru a PS for.

But if by chance he did....why and the hell retain Griffin...who is a decent talent BUT is a min 2 years away from having anywhere enough weight on his skeleton to play in the AFL.

Absolutely correct and after they leave we'll chase another "Gardiner" hack to replace them and bemoan the fact we don't have enough talent

do u think that you would be interested in trading for spida, givin he will prob have 2 years left in him and he is one of the best tap ruckman in the comp.

Not personally. He's getting a bit old and based on reports, has a tendency to 'feather his nest' a bit at the expense of his teammates.
