Biglands

I appreciate that it was never going to be a good move ethically or morally for the AFC to ask Rhett Biglands to retire but for the betterment of the club, that something they should have considered.

Now this is what I do not understand – if we are not a premiership contender in 2007 (according to Marty), how are we going to become one when he returns in 2008?

He is not the missing ingredient.

How is he not the missing ingredient???? When 2007 hasnt even started yet and we havent seen how a ruckman coming back after 18mths out of the game will go and two unproven ruckmen will go????

yes it looks like you have missed something :D

why would you think he hasn't been a good AFL ruckman?

Because we have been knocked out by the WCE in the last 2 finals series and Dean Cox has been one of the influential players on the ground.

We need to get a ruckman that can counteract his dominance around the ground and Rhett Biglands could not do that.

I see no need to answer the rest of that question because you will just contradict yourself and then go around in a circle by umming and erring and then suggest that I want to delist everyone.

I cannot see the point in keeping a 30 year old ruckman (with a long term injury) and a second tier player who has exceeded all his talents and is not going to get any better.

isn't that a good thing..... to "exceed your talents" ?

Did you even pay attention to the 2006 PF??? Biglands had very good control of Dean Cox until he was injuried late in the 2nd quarter, Adelaide had control of the game, Biglands gets injuried Clarke had the task by himself the momentum swinged game over.

He was doing ok until he got injured

So if Rhett doesn’t go down, we win the game?

You have not once responded to some very sensible comments I have directed at you. You've ignored anyone who has tried reason/compromise a position with you on why decisions/calls on axing Biglands and Massie can't be made now.

Then to top it off..... YOU ask someone to lock the thread??!?!?!

Thats me done on this one I think.

why do you need a definitive answer to everything....??

I made the comment - "he was doing ok until he got injured".....as an indication that Rhett was holding his own against an AA ruckman and was not getting stitched up as you would assert.

Thanks for the proof that Im not baiting him, shall we call it exhibit A;)

Put all the facts to him and he blindly ignores them then because nobody is going along, or he is to stubborn to listen asks for the thread to be locked:rolleyes:

Exactly before Biglands went down we had the momentum, and run, we had two ruckmen to rotate through the ruck, lost Biglands, Clarke had to ruck the entire last half by himself, momentum swings lose PF.

The way I see it is:

  • Rhett Biglands is a proven AFL ruckmen. Sure he’s no Polly Farmer, and he is the kind of player who needs to work at being good – but he is a big unit and has beaten his fair share of opponents over the years
.

  • The club was correct in offering him a new 2 year deal last year given Clarke’s impending retirement and Huddo’s injury
.

  • Rhett’s injury was a tragedy for him personally and robs the club of an experienced ruckman for the 2007 season.

As with everything – the timing is unfortunate on this one – Rhett has a 12 month injury – will be 31 on the 5th of September – and has a couple of young guns breathing down his neck for a ruck spot……

If the Dirty Dancer hadn’t gone down - from a list evolution perspective – you would have expected that 2007 would see a real ********-fight on for ruck spots with Huddo, Rhett, and the M&Ms battling it out – then in 2008 a changing of the guard somewhat as Rhett turns 32 and possibly in the last year (or 2) of his career.

Taking a positive – the injury fast-tracks the development of Ivan and Liam……albeit at a risk given anything could happen with Huddo’s knee.

It is true that if Biglands returns and plays 22 games in 2008 – the question must be asked – “what happened to the others??”…….but we must wait and see and let that situation evolve……we should not be terminating and paying out Biglands now because on paper our ruck stocks look promising……..Ever heard of a bird in the hand ???

Huddo could win the Nobel prize for services to physiotherapy and take up a position at the WHO – The Meese could decide that the Norwood Football Club has everything he has ever wished for in a life and sporting challenge and accept Drummond’s offer of the Captain coach position and retire from AFL football – while Ivan could have Greg Phillips fall on him at a family BBQ and be wheelchair bound for life.

WE JUST DON’T KNOW – a year is a long time……..let’s not burn our bridges –

Rhett stays on until things become a little clearer……

:)

Well we were 23 pts up, with two good ruckmen, you figure the rest out:thumbsu:

Macca, do you ever get the feeling that you are just bashing your head against a wall? Logic just doesn't work on some people.....

I gave up on this thread some time ago.

How anyone can say we can't win a premiership with Biglands in the team is just one of a number 'opinions' which defy logic. As you (and others) point out, losing Biglands was a major reason why we DIDN'T make the GF last year.

We also won premierships with ruck giants like Ben Marsh, Aaron Keating and Pitto playing for us. While not wishing to denigrate Pitto's contribution, I think that Rhett is is a much better player than he was.

Still, if Crows98 was born in '98 (a reasonable assumption given the standard of posts) then it is understandable that he/she would have scant knowledge of who made up the team in '97 & '98.

Anyway, that's certainly my last post on this subject!

What do you want me to say, that I will be a happy little chappie if Rhett Biglands lines up as a ruckman for the Adelaide Football Club round 1 2008? Because I will not be happy as it is potentially stopping the future development of Meesen and Maric.

I cannot see a future for Rhett Biglands at the AFC.

And I will say it again, I understand that it will be seen as a heartless move and it is not showing all that much loyalty to a player but sometime a football club has to make the tough decisions on a player.

I also know that he will never be delisted at this time of the year and in no way am I suggesting they do it today.

What am I blindly ignoring? By playing Rhett Biglands as a ruckman in 2008 will potentially limit the development of Maric and Meesen?

According to you we have ran out premiership race with this group, so why shouldn’t we start getting the next generation of player ready and have a crack as soon as we can.

But now we are not a premiership contender for 2007? How does that work.

Don’t talk about Trent Hentschel because as goods as is and was he can be covered by Perrie, Welsh and McGregor. Ben Hudson will have more or at least the same amount of influence in a game as Rhett Biglands did. But now we have no chance according to you?

How does that work.

Macca_no1 was the one who said we cannot win a premiership for 7 or 8 more years as the cycle needs to go full tilt.

There is no reason why we cannot win a premiership in 2007 but the probability of doing so suggest that the player in the team will have to work even hard than they have for the last 2 years, and it will even get harder in 2008.

If we do not win it in 2007 that is when we start to look at the future, not today (17th of January), and if we do start looking towards the future that is why I cannot see a future for Rhett Biglands at this football club.

It's the same side bar 2 players but you have completely written them off, do you understand that.

You have given up, you have conceded defeat already. .

Whoi else has given up on season 2007? not the ******** me. But you have.

Macca_no1 was the one who said we cannot win a premiership for 7 or 8 more years as the cycle needs to go full tilt.

That is the way it works clubs peak then bootom out, take a look at Brisbane, its due tot he draft and salary caps, you arent too clever if you cant work that out

You make the call to Biglands then and tell him he has to retire and pay out the two years of his contract then.

TOOL:rolleyes:
