Following the popularity of my Sid Barnes and Stan McCabe posts, here is one on Bill Ponsford (especially requested by Dipper from Cricket board).

Ponny had an appetite for runs. His bat looked twice as broad as any other batsman's.

4 of his first class tallies were 437, 429, 352, 336. No other batsman has reached 400 on two occasions inb first class matches.

"I always gave myself a chance against Bradman, but Ponsford seemed a different proposition. Like the elephant he never forgot. He was ready for every little trick up your sleeve." This quote from Bill O'Reilly signifies the brilliance of Ponny.

Grimmit also thought Ponny more difficult to bowl to than Bradman.

Grimmet & O'Reilly are 2 of the finest Australian bowlers ever.

Like Bradman, wet wickets upset Ponsford. Player's never asked if it had rained. The question was "did Ponny wake during the night".

Born: 19/10/1900.
First Class Career: 162m, 235 innings, 47 hundreds, average of 65.18, HS of 437 (Vic v Qld).
Test Career: 29m, 48 innings, 7 hundreds, average of 48.23, HS of 266 (Aus v Eng).

Ponsford was named in the Australian team of the century.

Of course, he was originally Bill Western.
