Elon is a very smart man. He figured out early that a good way to get rich was to scam government dollars under the environmental banner. A couple of local examples.

They have put up a bank of Tesla chargers in Corio. Corio!!! The median weekly income in Corio is $449.

The Victorian government heavily subsidises new charger points. Ironically the new chargers are not far from the Tesla big battery that the Victorian government shelled out $160m for a big Tesla battery near Geelong. When it was switched on it was on fire longer than it was operational.

Tesla chargers in Victoria are mainly powered by electricity produced from brown coal.

Tesla vehicles is a failing business model. All car manufacturers in the US have to pay taxes on internal combustion vehicles then there are credits for producing electric vehicles. Tesla, that only makes EVs, can sell the credits to the other manufacturers and it so it appears that their car division makes a profit. But as the other manufacturers ramp up their EV production that will disappear.

Has the Geelong plant ever been operational ?
The Victorian Big Battery is a 300 MW grid-scale battery storage project in Geelong, Australia which will store enough energy in reserve to power over one million Victorian homes for 1/2 an hour.

Not sure whether this is criticism or support?

Isn't the point of the big battery to do exactly as bolded. The benefit of the battery is to fill very short term gaps in the electricity market when demand exceeds supply. It works because unlike almost every other method of electricity supply it can switch on instantaneously.

Fair dinkum, a half hour - thats progress: if thats a step forward, we've got a long way to go IF
we expect to keep the lights on without the dispatchable power from coal.

We do expect to be able to keep the lights on, the heater or air conditioner, even the fridge.

You aren't Scott Morrison by any chance are you? Holding up your lump of coal.

I don't think sensible people want all the coal fired power stations shut down right now, we just want to see their demise as soon as reasonable practicable. Batteries and battery technology are a very important part of the solution to reduce coal dependence. Comments like your one above are just simplistic Liberal/National propaganda.

I'll elaborate, the whole story is very complicated but essentially the battery works because you can substantially reduce total production of electricity level by fossil fuel sources while retaining security of supply. The battery covers those few short moments every year where demand spikes beyond normal supply peaks before you can turn up the output from coal fired power and hydro etc. It doesn't need to meet demand for 30min. In most cases it's only needed for a much shorter period than that and it's done it's job.

If you think loyal support for political parties when they give exclusive privileged to celebrities and the wealthy for border entries, quarantine and lockdown I more important than calling out this bullshit you are part of the problem.

I have zero care for their motivation.

im not placing any ceiling on the elite.

im redistributing wealth to where it is valued and provides actual happiness.

That is the role of government. The days of billionaires doing the nation building are long gone. Unfortunately the government are simply an extension of the billionaires.

You can do that already with a tesla home battery.

Thats not the large batteries job though

Its both criticism & support in that it clarifies the role of batteries. As you explain to fill very short term gaps in the electricity market when demand exceeds supply.
Some see it as allowing renewables to power the economy when the wind doesnt blow & the sun doesnt shine as we have seen in the UK.

Hey dude - the tesla doesnt hold a charge

Never been strong on electricity, got no further than Watts before I knew it wasnt for me. In those days you needed a science to matriculate so Chemistry was easier for my little brain.
So what does a tesla home battery do, is it different to a car battery in that it powers the starter motor ( cos you cant bump start an automatic Holden).

The home battery is there to provide power overnight and for as long as it can in inclement weather.

the big battery is to smooth out transitions as massive demand spike / drops hit the network that damage both network and customer equipment - the tesla battery can both absorb the extra generated power from a drop or release extra power for a spike - it stops brownouts and overloads.

traditional network generation equipment is not fast enough to transition when a large load is suddenly applied or discontinued. Lithium batteries unlike lead acid/ agm / etc batteries can both charge and release huge amounts of energy without being damaged.

Coal is really not suited for that sort of transition as you just end up burning a lot of coal that cant just be switched off like gas can. Gas can be spun up / down faster than coal but isnt fast enough for large transients.

i have a lithium system with a pretty clever charging and monitoring system in my caravan. I installed a 240v microwave the other day and it pulled 180a out of the twin battery when in use. Id need about 8 lead acid / agms deep cycles to pull that sort of current and even then i reckon doing that regularly would shorten the life of the batteries by quite some time.

traditional batteries are either high current or deep draw - lithium is both + you can actually draw a lithium to closer to true empty without damage. Deep cycle lead acid really shouldnt even go to close to 50% discharge if you want it to last. Hi current batteries should only be used with even less % discharge.

so of course thats a pretty shallow but factual analysis of the various types of tech, their advantages and disadvantages.

Of course sky / fox / stokes will have you believe “we spEnT milLiOns on bAtry thAt oAnly haLF hOur wOrk loL”

which is utter pigshit - it was never the job of the battery to be a large scale baseload storage unit. Its a transition device - a shock absorber for the network. AGAIN you have been lied to.

Your ordinary imbecile might understand, but I'm a couple of rungs under ordinary, so I will need a couple of reads to absorb all.

Most articles I've read talk about '10,000 houses for one hour ' or similar & I dont limit my reading, so thanks for that.

I used to do a lot of work with this german guy with impeccable english who was a genius at explaining tech to non tech people.

im not that good at it and get easily frustrated when people dont understand. He had simple analogies that made sense to the uninitiated. I can disappear up my own arse with jargon etc - if you dont get anything ive said up above let me know and ill try and “Matthias-ify” it

Rhinehart spreads misinformation at a school in a rambling angry speech!!

She boasted that she had once helped to convince students climate change was not human-induced by organising a talk at the school by climate skeptic Lord Christopher Monckton and Prof Ian Plimer.

“The first thing Lord Monckton asked the senior students, being aware [An Inconvenient Truth] had been shown repeatedly to students, was to put their hands up if they believed that climate change was human-induced,” she said.

“About 70% or more of students put their hands up. Lord Monckton and Prof Plimer were only given a comparatively short time to speak … at the end of their speeches, the question [about] human-induced climate change was re-asked, and the hands changed, about 30% put their hands up.”
