To stop Andrews?
So why didn’t we do it?
Obviously Kes is just cracking a joke about Frampton’s cult hero performance on Andrews in the 2023 GF, however in all seriousness, the answer is that the Frampton hard tag on Andrews (or any other key defender really) will probably always be a once off special. So why didn’t we do it?
It would have disrupted our established defensive system. Frampton was much more of a utility role player back then.So why didn’t we do it?

Needed a second Billy FramptonSo why didn’t we do it?
Pure confidence. After injury he needed time to build. Each player and situation is different. Right now Billy needs time to build. Bring him back early and the risk is not competitive and brain fades. Billy being good Billy is very good.Sliding doors moment. You have to wonder where we would be if Reef didn’t do his knee in round 2.
The club was preferring him in his maiden season as a defender, over Billy.
We’ll never know. I just find it hard to imagine our season would have gone any better. In fact Billy missed rounds 16-21
Round 16 we beat West Coast but didn’t play well.
Round 17 beat Carlton
Then we lost round 18 and 19
Beat Richmond round 20
Lost to Brisbane round 21 and I’ll never understand why Billy played in the VFL and not on Logan Morris!!
Andrews only had two extra disposals against Geelong than he did against Frampton.
Also it wasn’t even that special. Harris Andrews was well on top of Frampton after the second half and had a ripper last quarter that almost got them over the line.Obviously Kes is just cracking a joke about Frampton’s cult hero performance on Andrews in the 2023 GF, however in all seriousness, the answer is that the Frampton hard tag on Andrews (or any other key defender really) will probably always be a once off special.
I think Andrews or any other competent interceptor now would realise pretty early on what we were up to, and that there’s absolutely no use in following Billy Frampton blindly into a random forward pocket away from the hotspots.
Billy wasn’t even attempting to mark the sitters that were kicked to him that day!
Or just used McStayNeeded a second Billy Frampton
One to stay in the backline. One to tag Harris Andrews.
In hindsight probably should have tried it again
Yep that’s precisely why it wouldn’t work again. Andrews clocked onto it in the last quarter and the tag completely broke down. Also it wasn’t even that special. Harris Andrews was well on top of Frampton after the second half and had a ripper last quarter that almost got them over the line.
Only the last quarter really. He was kept from having any influence on the game for much of 3 quarters. Also it wasn’t even that special. Harris Andrews was well on top of Frampton after the second half and had a ripper last quarter that almost got them over the line.
Even in the third quarter Andrews was getting on top. Then in the last quarter Andrews absolutely thumped Frampton.Only the last quarter really. He was kept from having any influence on the game for much of 3 quarters.
I wouldn't say really thumped in but was frustrated when the game was in the balance late that he allowed Andrews too much access to the ball and he was able to clear into their danger zone.Even in the third quarter Andrews was getting on top. I think 9 disposals, 4 marks and 6 intercepts to one handball in a quarter of footy is a thumping.I wouldn't say really thumped in but was frustrated when the game was in the balance late that he allowed Andrews too much access to the ball and he was able to clear into their danger zone.
He did a great job for three quarters. Just let the man have a little credit without mocking his efforts. The Lions lost. We won. Billy contributed to our victory. Also it wasn’t even that special. Absolutely he did.He did a great job for three quarters. Just let the man have a little credit without mocking his efforts. The Lions lost. We won. Billy contributed to our victory.
yes!He did a great job for three quarters. Just let the man have a little credit without mocking his efforts. The Lions lost. We won. Billy contributed to our victory.
I’m happy with that narrative for the GF day however if posters are gonna suggest he should have played in Andrews on the PF I’m gonna bring up the flaws. He did a great job for three quarters. Just let the man have a little credit without mocking his efforts. The Lions lost. We won. Billy contributed to our victory.
