Yep. Any player already on a senior list is more of a known quantity. As you say, their basic attributes have already been put on display.

Where it gets tricky is trying to ascertain if they have upside e.g. the anvil or if what you've seen is all you're ever going to get.

A visit to the ground might not get you that level of knowledge either. You'd have to talk to the player and get a better understanding of their potential to further develop. A video or even a visit to the ground won't uncover any problems/opportunities e.g. disconnect between the player and the coaching staff etc.

And in fact, a long interview with a so-called professional like derek hine might be of limited value. How many times has derek misread a player in these aspects. Better to send a trained research psychologist with a proven metric

We know he got dropped to SANFL but really I am not sure he deserved to be on his form 6 games disposals 18ppg 6.5 marks a game 5 reb a game I think if he was playing as a KD for most teams he would be picked most weeks on that form.

Another good thing was when dropped to the lower level he still kept up his form so I think he knew the Pies were interested in him,I also think he may turn out better than most of us think 3yrs is a good contract for a player like him but I am glad we have him.

He was a role player, recent history suggests you need your tall defenders to be taking plenty of intercept marks and providing rebound, not just being a lockdown defender, to win the flag.
Good thing Roughead took a shitload of marks then

We do need another key defender and Billy will be given every opportunity to that player it's all up to him, he's coming into a good environment and has a good defensive coach there in leppa to help him along.

Still think we need 1 or 2 young developing KPP to work with what we current have

Depends on your definition but we have Kelly Kreuger and Dean…as well as adding mcstay and frampton. We,ll probably draft another although turfing McMahon after two years is a head scratcher.

He got dropped after that game because he couldn't defend one on one and in the two games they copped a hiding in (GWS and Carlton) his effort levels were average at best. For a cellar-dwelling team that is looking primarily for players who are willing and able to bust their gut out on the field during games even against much better opposition he slipped back into his normal ways at the wrong time.

People on this board are hoping that a 26 year old can suddenly learn how to do so, pointing to Roughead as an example despite the fact that he was primarily a defender for most of his career and was just shifted into the ruck out of necessity (and poor list management) at the Doggies for a couple of years.

The other line that gets trotted out is that a "team defence" structure doesn't require good one-on-one defenders at the KPD spots because there's always support coming, but the fact is that there is plenty of one-on-one defending to be done in any scheme throughout a game, from the initial bustle at the huddle in the goal square, to covering short jab leads, to tracking your opponent on longer searching leads to close them down and then inevitable contested pack marking situation (which is really just a bunch of one-on-one contests happening in the same area).

I don't think Frampton has ever shown himself to be overly effective in any of those defensively-minded actions, but I guess time will tell as to whether he ends up being VFL filler or whether he can grow enough as a footballer to carve a role out for us at AFL level.

Roughy did plenty of that.

Pretty much par for the course I would have thought party, if he were a polished article he wouldn't have been available.

He's size, age and position fit our list parameters and he has had enough good moments along the way to hint that he could grow into a role.

The rest is up to him.

Fair enough, he needs work.

If it were just Adelaide dropping him Id say their strange club situation might be a part of his form but he was moved on from Port as well.

Wait and see what Fly etc can do with him because physically hes it and a bit.

Let's just hope he doesn't make it three-for-three in terms of clubs where he has started a punch up with a team mate on the training track...

Traded a few punches with Hartigan at Adelaide. What happened at Port?

If he wants to endear himself to the Pie Faithful he should belt some Carlton flog and cop four weeks early on. Instant cult hero.

Glad to hear he has some fire and passion. The powerful Richmond teams of the late sixties and early seventies had regular punch ups at training. Hafey loved it.

Indeed. He chased Rance out of bounds, and Rance rolled over and pushed his studs into Francis' nuts, so Francis gave him a toe tap on the arse...sIx WeEkS! But nothing for the foot-squirrel.

Got ripped off worse the next year when he had 40 and 3 against the Crows but Troy Lehman got the 3 votes....
