Might be an Olive-backed Oriole. The often get confused for each other. They would be much more likely in that area.

Yeah that does look very similar. It was probably one of them. The belly of the one I saw was a bit more coloured and the beak honestly looks way off what I saw so I'm still not sure but I knew you'd have a good answer. I'm tipping it was an oriole. Might’ve been dirty on its underside, throwing off my guess.

It didn't make an audible call which would've helped I'm sure.

Thanks mate :)

A female Ruff has somehow made its way all the way from Eurasia to the Western Treatment Plant near Geelong.

A rare bird for this part of the world and so Victorian bird nerds are piling in from all over the state to see it.

Lucky I only live 20 minutes away :grinning:

The male of this species is a pretty funky looking bird (male not my photo).

Wow that's so cool.

I asked a few weeks ago about Satin Bowerbirds, someone in my area (quite close) actually snapped a couple photos of a pair hanging out in their backyard so I'm starting to think it was a SB I saw which would be neat. I hope they frequent the area more often. I would love to see one of their nests, from an appropriate distance.

Can't get over his head. Are ruffs related to snipes at all?

They are. All part of the Scolopacidae family.

Though they closely resemble a bunch of sandpipers like the Sharp-tailed sandpiper and Pectoral sandpiper.

To be honest its often super hard for regular bird people to tell then apart when they are all bunched together in large groups.

Like if you're not up close and there are a lot of birds in a small space moving about only the experienced eye will be able to tell these two and the Ruff apart.

That's because there might be hundreds of sharpies and only 1-4 of the Ruff or Pectoral.

That's cool, I'd definitely struggle to tell them apart. Appreciate the info :)

I can't remember if I posted any Bowerbird shots or not. I only have a few of a female I saw down Lorne way last year.
