What a gorgeous bird. Look at the colours! Great snap.
Southern Africa has some magnificent birds but the bee-eaters and kingfishers were my favourites.

What is your set up if you don't mind me asking?

I'm hoping to save enough to do an upgrade by the end of the year.
I started with a second hand Canon 5D Mkiii with a second hand Canon 400mm f5.6
I'm still using the 400mm but upgraded to a Canon R7 body.

I think I picked up the lens for around $800 and the 5D for about $400. It was a good set up to learn on but the R7 has great auto focus settings to detect birds eyes.

Saw a few Red-Rumped Parrots foraging on my morning walk. You can see the striking colours of the male in the foreground. If you look closely the eponymous red feathers appear just above the tail. Out of focus in the background is a female who bears much more muted colours.

Does anyone else own this? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/What_Bird_Is_That?

I’ve got the 1984 version I think. It’s fabulous with lovely artwork, and really well structured to look at related bird groups and their native area so you can flick through and work out what bird you just saw. I’ve got the hard copy because I’m 1,000,000 old in November. You need a forklift to carry it around with you, though.

Highly recommend

There are two nice King parrots eating my pomegranates. This guy is much brighter than you can tell from my very average photo because I took it very early and the light wasn’t the best.

His girlfriend is with him but out of sight. She is more green but slightly duller in colour. The juvenile parrots are like that too, but it’s the wrong season.

There are definitely some lorikeets waiting their turn because I can hear them screeching

This is incredible!
I was well pleased because that tree usually gets lorikeets who are lovely but little bullies, or bats which you won’t let me post on this thread (mind you, dark lumps dangling from a dark thing on a dark background are less than riveting - but I still think there is a plumage bias in operation here).

I need to keep getting up early.

I might consider this. I like looking at birds but the iPhone camera doesn’t do them justice. I might make my sister an offer. She bought a terrific camera years back to do landscape photography in Tasmania (my family have all settled down there for some odd reason) but she’s kind of dropped the hobby so might release the gear for some much needed cash.

Lighting wasn't perfect but this is the clearest shot I've gotten of an Eastern Rosella. Hanging out on a tree on my street this morning.

They are one of my favourites. We don’t seem to have any where I live which is a shame, but I used to meet lots in Canberra
