They might not match Mutch and they would be greedy to match McCreadie but they would be fools not to match Sproule and show a distinct lack of cunning not to match Cumming.. As for Perryman they better be very WARY... Man..

Sproule they could get for a late pick in the 50s, whether they match that or not. I think they match Setterfield & Perryman (100% ish confidence), 75% confident Macreadie & Cumming but not sure about any of the others. It's just going to depend on draft night & whether sanctions come or not....

Well first of all that comment of mine was a bit of joke, bit embarrassing when I have to point that out. But seriously my whole point is based on the fact that they do get sanctioned because that could change just about every clubs thinking except for Hawthorn. .

If I've worked it our correctly, then IF GWS lose their original 1st and 2nd rounders (15 & 37) then they would end up with picks 2, 39, 45, 52, 55, 57, 58, 59 & 60.
If GWS use pick 2 before any bids on a non-academy player then they have 1902 points remaining to match bids.
If Carlton bid on Setterfield at pick 5 and GWS choose to match they have only 400 points left for the rest of their academy picks.
A bid on Perryman at say 14 per Bishop's draft would cost ~929 points bringing them already into 500+ points deficit.
If they continued to match other bids where as per Bishop's draft (where they match bids for Setterfield, Perryman, Sproule, Macreadie and Cumming, Ie. not even including Mutch, Garthwaite or Tiziani) they would be 1700 points in deficit.
Currently GWS have no 1st or 3rd round picks for next year after trading these to Richmond. They do, however, have 3 2nd round picks. If they do go into such deficit it could cost them all 3 of their 2nd round picks.
This would leave them with a 4th round pick at the earliest and I believe they have some good academy talent coming through next year as well?
I think this would definitely be concerning and they may have to leave more academy players on the table than they would have otherwise.

I guess they would have to rely heavily on being able to bring in more top draft picks next year by trading away talented want-away players.

I believe GWS will be wanting to save as many points as possible for next years academy group. As highly rated as this years group is, next years academy class is rated as even better.

I do not believe GWS will match a bid at pick one for Setterfield. At pick five yes.

Bishop, your thread is a great read. Cheers for doing this.
Two guys I'm a bit intrigued by are Bailey Morrish and Josh Begley. Both seem excellent talents. Morrish seems to me to have a lot of really good traits- an intercepter, a good 1v1 defender, a great left foot kick and is quick. He's a smart player too. Seems like the sort of guy who would slot straight into an AFL defence without much fuss and play a role.
Begley has tremendous power. He has good skills, clean hands, a great feel for the game up forward or at stoppages and is a great size. Endurance and a lack of production are the only significant concerns I can put my finger on.

Despite this, these two don't seem to be spoken about very highly. What is stopping these two being top 30 picks?

Morrish has an outstanding leap for a 'small' defender, Does intercept the ball well and at times played at full back for the Stingrays in 2016. I like his left foot, but I've honestly never seen him kick on either (right) & for a player like him I'd be a good thing. A similar player is Cedric Cox who has similar traits- but kicks it on both feet and is arguably cleaner. Morrish's endurance does need some work running a 12.4 beep at the combine & he isn't a big ball winner averaging 13.1 disposals in the TAC Cup this year, all be it with a few of them being from the kicks ins when he played on.

Begley really burst onto the scene but will need work on his conditioning. It's a bit of an unknown with him- he didn't do a preseason & just started the year as a plugger out of the goal square before the Ranges conditioned him to play through the midfield. His testing stuff at the combine was pretty good and there is a big ceiling for him in the future. Once he has a few preseasons under his belt I reckon he'll develop into a good player.

Neither have been spoken too much about due to their limited performances- neither playing in the U18 Champs & only Morrish playing in the All Stars game.

Both players will likely find a home in the 25-45 range. If I had to punt I'd say Begley will go higher.

I haven't seen him play this year, so can't comment on him. I know KM has a huge 'bias/love' over him seeing as he saw him at the Pies, I doubt he's seen any of his stuff in the WAFL this year, so it'd be daft to comment on how he has gone.

Not a reach at 30/31- it sounds like he could go anywhere from 25+. I'm not a huge fan, I didn't mind his stuff in the Div 2 champs, Div 1 I felt he was quieter.

Depends where the bids come in for others & Sproule. If he went in the 20s I don't reckon Sproule is matched, but in the 30s I reckon they would.
Your opinion KM is biased on Jye Bolton what is not an opinion is that he won the most coveted award in WAFL the Sandover Medal

Doesn't mean much. Aidan Tropiano won last year, Aaron Black the year before. Which AFL teams do they play for?

My comment was simply that you do not have to have seen him kick a ball in the WAFL to know he had an excellent season , the Sandover is proof of that .

It had no comment regarding his draft chances , you are taking the discussion a leap on .

But I did find it somewhat refreshing to see someone comment that they reserved judgement as they had not seen them play .

Hi Bishop,
Being at work I haven't been able to read the full thread, so hope I'm not asking something you have been over before.

Give there is a lack of KPP depth at Richmond and particularly in defense, would the Tiges look at Jack Maibaum at 27, or at that pick stay with best available talent?

No worries all good!

I think best to take best available at 27 for the Tigers. Key defender Brennan Cox may be one they look at #27 - I'm not a huge fan, but it's not that far off his mark. Could be a few defenders available at their next pick 55, Jack Maibaum probably goes 30-50, but needs a bit of work as he is really just a lock down defender that is really good in one-on-one situations, but has played forward at times for school & Eastern.

Rucks seem to be the ones that get picked later and come good more often.

There's talk of next years draft having more tall players, but I would be worried about using both our early picks on talls next year, think it would be good to get a likely prospect this year and take one good tall and one good mid next year.
Try an pick up another young ruck/forward if there is one available later this year, otherwise pick one up next year.
We were caught out on rucks when we lost Ty this year, but Nank could be a good long term pick up.
Still need another quality ruck coming up behind him and I think the jury is still out if Soldo can make the grade at AFL level.

Your First round, is quite unusual with Alex Vilis in there and Cedric Cox .
Interesting to see how close you will go. I always rate your phantoms.
Although a couple of issues/explanations:

Will Brodie outside top 10 ?
SPS is more of a slider personally. If anything those two should be swapped.

I query Griffen Logue as a top 10, sure Camp results were a huge boost for him but I don't think his football skills are top 10 worthy.

Will update mine later this week, but Villis will be right out of it now after a heart issue - which is unfortunate because I rated him very highly. Cedric Cox I put in there, because I know Nth/Adel/WB have done a fair bit of work on him.

Brodie should get outside the top 10 at this stage, would think that North (despite not needing another inside mid), West Coast & Adelaide would be his likely destination.

I think SPS will be off to the Blues at 5, Suns at 6 or Fremantle at 7 - Definitely couldn't see him any lower than that.

Logue's work in the WAFL was very good, testing well is always a boost: but they need to be able to play football. His stuff in the champs were good, he could have almost got a gig in the All Australian team. He's built very well in his upper body and it seems very likely he'll be in the top 10 or so names.

Can you tell me what kind of defender Brenan Cox is and if he would be a good fit for the Lions defence or is he too much like McStay Gardiner

He's a key defender that reads the play well in defence and is good athletically. He was All Australian in the U18 Champs & held down the fort for South Australia at full back in the National Under 18 Championships and often floated between forward and back, with some stints in the ruck for Woodville-West Torrens in the SANFL. He played both Reserves and Under 18s football in South Australia, where he showed off his good leap and marking up forward and his intercept marking and one-on-one work in defence. Despite his early season testing results, he at times can appear slow moving around the ground. Is one of the handful of best defenders in the draft pool.

I'm not a huge fan of him- I don't think the Lions would look at him personally. Think you've got enough talls and I wouldn't take him with the picks they have at the moment with others I like there.

Me either just that Mick Ablett chose him for us in Road to Draft's Phantom Draft and wanted to know more about him

Hey bish, if you could pin point 3 players that will be in st kildas range that you can see landing at st kilda at pick 23 so I can do some research on them? I feel as though it could be either Powell pepper Bolton or battle, would like to know your thoughts as I've heard there is flight risk with Bolton. Cheers

Does Alex Villis' heart issue rule him out of playing in any league and hamper future draft prospects?

If so Bishop, do you recommend him becoming an asst coach somewhere?

Or, if you were in the same spot, would you pursue further studies or go for another job?

It's always hard to predict those picks in the 20s because it'll depend heavily on who goes where in the teens. I think names such as C.Cox, Sam Powell-Pepper, Shai Bolton, Josh Battle & Todd Marshall (although I can't see them picking the pair) + there is bound to be a slider.

I think there may be a flight risk with Bolton- but that's my view.

I think his heart issue will probably rule him out completely, meaning he won't be drafted. But without knowing the full details - It'd be misinformed of me to do that.

Not sure what Villis' plans were study wise in 2017 but I'm sure he'll stay involved in some form.

We need quality mids in general. Brodie trained with us last year too and by all accounts impressed, I'd be stunned if we passed him up.
