Has anyone had a good look at Rayners wingspan. Watching Friday's game, it struck me that Rayner has shorter arms that normal. Take a good look at Dusty's arms compared to Rayner. Rayner has a shorter upper arm from elbow to shoulder, big bicep.

Hey Bish & LM, is the fact that Rayner ran a 12 beep a concern?

Bit late reading this post but the combine testing has changed for this season.
The yo-yo test in place of Beep
2km TT instead of the dreaded 3km.

I suspect Rayner will test a lot better in the Yo-Yo test than beep. Yo-Yo test more anaerobic system of running, rather than your aerobic system of running. Similar in the fact of 20m run but once you hit the line you don't wait for a beep, you run straight back to the starting line (equalling a 40m effort) and then have a 5-10second rest before going. The beep gets quicker each run back and forth (40m effort like the beep), but the rest very much remains the 5-10 second barrier, on the final few levels gets down to around 5 seconds wait. Not as start and stop as the Beep. EPL clubs use this method of testing, I could try get some times from the clubs over there, see what their elite runners are getting.

2km TT i think was the right move by the AFL Combine committee. A lot of clubs now do 2km pre season time trials, I really don't know to many clubs still on the 3km band wagon other than Port Power and Melbourne Demons. Plus the players won't be stressing about that deadly 3km TT come the last day.

Lions still do 3km tt.

Interesting - I haven't actually noticed it. They don't do wingspan at the TAC Cup preseason testing, but it is done at the National Combine. Ask me then :p

I think that will change in the next 24 months, its kind of getting blown out the door now.
I think due to the game have so many rotations (although cutting down now), originally this is why the 2km time trial was brought into club fitness programs.
Im not sure what you think but i tend to sway more with the 2km than a 3km, just due the game changing.

I actually did notice that and the 1st thing that i thought of was this looks a little weird and had a resemblance to Daniel Rich

Rayner looks to have a similar leg to trunk ratio of a couple of other blokes:

Yes it is, I remember speaking to a club recruiter earlier in the year and he was very scathing about it. 11.10 is terrible.

The fact is he's never had a history of running a good beep test so the endurance stuff has always been lacking.

In saying that - it hasn't had a notable effect on him, but I've rarely seen him star in a fourth quarter this season. Whether that's a coincidence or telling about his endurance.

I suppose once he is on an AFL list he will be able to build a tank, but you're right in saying a 11.10 beep is terrible.

The reason for the 11.10 Beep, and others like it, is the main thing.

1) He is inherently lazy.
2) He has physical deficiencies that make him unable to have very good endurance.
3) He just hasn't concentrated on getting real fit yet. Just being a bit of a teenager.

1 & 2 = Not good.
3 = No drama.

He looks like a REAL topline AFL player in the making. He looks like the No1 Pick.

But you gotta be able to run hard and long in AFL to be a Real Gun.

Every aspiring draftee has deficiencies, so this is his. Certainly workable!

Absolutely. He isn't going outside the Top 5 or so. The debate now, is whether he is Pick 1 or 2 or closer to 5.

In that conversation, everything is analysed and put through the wringer.

Bishop I remember Dimma giving a speech on our draftees from last year saying how we really value players who show desperation and effort as much as anything. Assuming this is the case this year looks like there's alot to like re: KPP's this year. Kreuger was awesome, Clavarino, Naughton, Petty. Do you think it's worth trading one of our first picks for 2 in the 20's so we can get 3 KPP's this year?

Would trading next year's first pick for Matthew Kennedy be a bad move or should we just go to the draft with that pick at this stage?

I wouldn't be trading down any picks, it can be dangerous. Gold Coast traded down a few years ago to get Clayton Oliver, with the pick they gave up ending up being used on Oliver before they had their own selection.

I wouldn't have any of those three (Clavarino, Naughton, Petty) in the 20s at the moment, all a bit further back for me. I'm not so sure Clavarino shows desperation, he picks & chooses when to intercept at certain stages and got a bath in the 1st half on Friday.

Kreuger the only one I'd like in those selections and I wouldn't be against taking him with where Tigers have one of their first selections in the teens.

One golden rule for trade week this year - Don't trade next year's picks. Unless it's Josh Kelly/ Dustin Martin a club is targetting.

So bad move - trade two 1st rounders than this rather than giving up next year's 1st rounder.

Are there any Clayton Olivers atm...some players who could come from the clouds? The Nationals haven't been very inspiring IMO

Every year kids get drafted that don't play in the U18 Championships and this year will be no exceptions. In saying that - I couldn't see anyone breaking into the top 10-15 that we haven't seen at the carnival like Oliver did.

I reckon the three VIC U19 cricketers Will Sutherland, Nathan Murphy and Ed Newman will be three that probably get a national combine invite, with the latter two very much unknown to those not watching school footy. I reckon they could be two that come from the clouds should they nominate.

Talking about school footy, how do you rate the public system vs the APS and AGS. I am sure it wouldn't rate that highly. I know a lot of boys get scholarships to the private schools and I read that everybody goes to watch those but does anybody go to watch the public system games?

I've watched 2 'public' school games this year - all of which have been Grand Finals and they have been absolutely worthless. Standard was worse than the worst APS or AGS schools going at it.

APS is ahead of AGS on standard, but public competitions are so far back.

At one of the two public school games there was 3 scouts watching - one club recruiter who I know well left at Half Time and suggested I did the same.

At the other public school game there was 1.

And we aren't talking about head recruiters, mostly the part-time blokes.

Haileybury are renown for giving out the most scholarships in the sporting scheme, and it's no surprise they will win the APS competition this season. Games of APS/AGSV footy are heavily attended and watched by every club.

Newman was listed at Dragons a month ago, then pulled out.
Won't play TAC despite the opportunity.
Highly unlikely to pursue draft nomination.

Murphy has played and will now play the balance of the season at Dragons. As for Sutherland - that is anyone's guess.

Out of curiosity, does anybody go to the ACC?
