Reason for Coleman-Jones omission Bishop?.....Highly skilled big men like him don't grow on trees.

I'm not huge on him. I wouldn't call him highly skilled. What are you rating him as? A ruck or forward? His contested marking is very good up forward, but his kicking/kicking technique is poor & I have some question marks on it at the next level. For me, if I'm drafting a tall forward it's either inside the top 25 or not at all, as the hit rate is very low post Pick 25.

As a ruck, I don't mind him - but there's other rucks such as Bailey Griffiths, Joe Griffiths and Joel Amartey I'd take ahead of him. Just not a big fan of CCJ and never have been warm on him over the last few years.

I have to agree, never really caught my attention.

There are a few players which I have slightly different thoughts on.

1. Hayes - I'm just not sure rucks go that high anymore. Hayes has a little Boyd about him (yes I know he went pick 1) and Boyd was a much better forward and he has not massively progressed at AFL level. Hayes does not have that aggressive nature for the ruck and his skill set when rucking was not amazing.
I just cannot for the life of me place him in my top 10.

2. Balta - His football IQ seems very low whenever I've watched him. He also seemed very robotic as a defender and it made him look slow at times, I just think it is those glimpses of a 60m goal that make people get excited and forget about his football brain.

3. Allen - I've struggled with this player as I love what he offers, but he just seems very reliant on lead, mark. AFL is about zoning and endurance, just not sure that Allen with his height plays a modern day forwards role. When you compare him to someone like Curnow who is more a modern day forward. (Unless you happen to fall upon a Cameron, Patton, Lynch, JD....

4. Lachlan Fogarty - Every time I watched this kid he impressed me and maybe is slightly above average in mosts categories and just not elite in one or two, hence he does not get the love. I just think he will be insanely solid at AFL level.

5. Ling - People keep telling me to watch out for Ling and the few times I watched him, I wanted to get excited but it just did not catch my attention. Is his kicking really a highlight? Can he increase his production levels? What am I missing with him?

Cheers Bishop, love your insights into this draft class.

Fair enough I heard very early in the year that we where interested but im very sure most clubs are haha. The Calder Cannons link would be strong we tend to focus on that area quite a bit, we have Daniel Hanna available to our academy but not sure we will even consider him for a rookie.

Also happy 2,000 post :p
What has Hanna done all year? As a key forward how many goals has he kicked this year? His hands and kicking deserted him this year. From the games I saw he wasn't worth even a rookie slot. Running style needs a lot of work and certainly needs to put on a lot of muscle mass.

Great read.
I believe Constable at 3 is a real chance.
I believe Claravino to the Bulldogs is a real possibility and Aiden Bonar will go higher than most of us would expect.

1. Hayes - I know a few clubs who have him in the top handful of players, but I really couldn't see them drafting him there. English last year I rated very highly and he slipped down the order. I think teens + for Hayes is his range.

2. Balta's decision making is what lets him down - but that's similar to how Alex Rance was coming through the U18s and the like. Balta's got plenty of upside and X-Factor, and whilst he isn't the full package yet: I project him highly just due to the fact he 'could be anything'. Have seen him about 15 times over the last two years. I'd be happy to take him in the 10-20 range.

3. I've liked what Allen has produced this year and whilst I've seen him the least out of anyone in my top 30, from what I've seen it has been super impressive.

4. Agree RE: Fogarty, I really like him, size will probably count against him - but he's one I've liked watching throughout the years.

5. Ling's kicking is in the elite category, he can break the lines - has very good agility. He's not a huge ball winner and has probably stagnated a bit since mid year where I'd hoped he would get to. But one that could pick himself up in finals. Has a lot of traits that I look for in a player.

There's potential upside with Hanna - and when you can get a developing tall with an elite tank, very good leap for free, I think they will be willing to put a few years in. Needs to put on a lot of muscle, but that's what S&C coaches do with every player - whether they're a top 10 or the last player picked in the draft. Kicking technique needs work, but he has shown he can mark the ball. Has had a broken finger for a chunk of the season and is out for the rest of the year.

Agree regarding Constable at 3 - I've mentioned it in here previously and on the Blues board. Most of the talk I've heard RE: Clavarino will be a 3rd rounder + -- didn't have a great champs from a drafting point of view.

Bonar agree that he'll go higher than everyone thinks. Players that size are what AFL clubs love.

I feel he is one of those players that doesn't need to get a lot of the ball to have an impact, was suprised to see he only had 14 or so touches against Murray a few weeks ago because I felt he had the most impact out of all the Geelong players that game. His ability to carry the ball and be so clean in doing it is perhaps the best in this years draft he just never fumbles and he is near impossible to catch when he gets going.

I think it will be one of Coffield or Constable if they last to the Dogs. Need more mid sized players who can take marks around the ground.

We took quite a few young KPD's in the last few years. Don't think we will go there again with an early pick.

Hanna couldn't mark the ball with two good hands this year. What is a chunk of the season (the last three weeks)? Not sure where you get the elite tank from either. To get the bulk on his frame it would mean take a good three years or so. Not worth it for me.

14.2 on the beep - one of the best out of any of the talls in the draft pool this year. Take your Cannons negativity out of it .

If Bonar has a decent finals series, reckon he gets a gig to the All-Star game so recruiters can see him in a psuedo champs scenario.

Reckon he's a real shot at a top 20 spot, similar to Ryan Burton.

Red hot go at North's second pick imo.

I think both Brisbane teams will overlook him.

He'll be in the mix for their pick - but he isn't a pure midfielder. I still think the Blues need an inside midfielder and I'd be targeting LDU (let's say Cerra & Dow are off the board). I also think they'll consider Charlie Constable as a similar player to Patty Cripps on the inside.

I do rate Rayner at 1 - but I don't think he's too good to pass up. Considering BL & GC do in my example - Rayner still does have his weaknesses (as do every player) but if they want a full time midfielder he isn't the man, but if the Blues want an exciting Fwd-Mid in the Robbie Gray/Christian Petracca mould, he's the guy.
Really rate your input Bish, but i'd be very happy to get a Robbie Gray/ Christrian Petracca into the club. We need to improve our scoring ability, and Rayner with our young talls is very appealing.

Jarrod Brander very ordinary up forward today, Flynn Appleby giving away plenty of size had the better of him, looks to need a bit of work on his leading patterns today to my eye. Certainly didn't play like top ten pick today.

There was a two minute patch in the second term where it looked like Brander had finally released and took a few grabs, kicked 1.1, but after that Appleby beat him in every 1v1. Granted the conditions didn't suit and his teammates weren't doing him any favours, but Appleby's performance hopefully made recruiters take note.

Is there any chance RFC could trade their 2 firsts for one of North/St.kilda/Collingwood/Fremantle picks or would these clubs be crazy to trade out of the first 4-7 picks?

Thats two disappointing efforts in 2 weeks for Jarrod. Feel he is more 10-20 than 1-10. Appleby very solid! Thought Domic was good in patches, Meek rucked superbly, Bullen and Cox dangerous forward.
Pioneers
Davis....hardly touched it kicked a goal
Schumacher- Another to have a bad day
Farrell- A good solid performance, used his run and kick well
B Henderson- did a couple of nice things but an average performance
O'Brien- Consistent, not brilliant but named best
Daniels - worked hard and kicked a nice goal, good run and carry
D Henderson- his inside work was really good, hands good, kick average, great tackling

Where does Ben Silvagni rank Bish?

Later on at this stage. Was underwhelming this year for Xavier in all the games.

Could put your house on him playing that game. Few recruiters I've spoken to put zero emphasis on that game. There's zero defensive work and it's pretty average in terms of the little things clubs look for.

Definitely a shot for top 20

Where do you see any potential bids coming for Naish?

Appleby has been super this year. I've said for a while I like Brander at CHB - He isn't helped by the poor ball use going inside 50 from the Pios. They're one of the worst teams I've seen this year.

Interesting to see whether someone looks at Appleby - no combine invite. Reckon he might be one of those guys that does a really good role at TAC Cup level. but end up getting overlooked draft wise. Will be interesting to see.

I can see Collingwood/Freo trading back, to try and get a player or two that they really like. We'll see.

15-25, for me - most likely in the 20s.

Yeah considering he was giving up 9cm and 5kg roughly to Brander he matched him well 1v1, was good at positioning himself in the contest and protecting the ball drop and he also peels off and comes in as a third defender to spoil a contest. Reminds me a little of Tyson Goldsack in that sense. I hope someone throws a rookie pick at him but yeah no invite makes it unlikely (unless one club is secretly keen of course)

I reckon that there are a couple that can get rookied without an invite. Why the hell Brander wasn't put at CHB against the wind is bewildering. Pioneers have the names on paper but no real game plan
