Hey Bishop.

I'm interested in your view on Hugh Dixon.

He looks like a really natural tall. His major weakness seems to be a lack of speed. Do you think he can get up to speed in a professional system? Does Tasmania make players slower!?

Also. I'm wondering the draft range for Ross and Starcevich. They look like talented players to me. I'm hoping one slips through to Port's first pick. 46

Cheers.

Speed is a big issue for Hugh. I've always said with KPF you either take them in the top 25 - or you don't touch them. I wouldn't touch Hugh. Speed will be hard for him to improve, while trying to drop some "puppy fat" and work on his endurance + having to build up some muscle.

Ross & Starcevich will be somewhere between 25-50, probably both 2nd rounders that could get through to Pick 46. Probably more likely Ross does - though I wouldn't put it past Carlton really considering him at Pick 30.

Hey Bish. So did Coffield play actual full games in the midfield at TAC Cup level this year and if so, how did he go there?

I see that he had a 34 disposal, one goal game, and a 30 disposal, 10 mark game and am wondering where he was playing in those games or how much midfield he played this year.

Yep he did play through the midfield a lot.
The 34 disposal game v Bendigo he played in the midfield, had six clearances + five inside 50s.

Same with the 30 disposal game, he played in the middle with four inside 50s and four rebound 50s. Worked hard up and down the ground. Used it well by foot that day at RAMS Arena.

if he's so good in the midfield, and potentially a Pendlebury like player, why does he play on a back flank?

seems to be a lot of guys who are either forwards or backs who have "future midfield potential" in them, rather than good pure midfielders.

Because he is one of the best kicks in the draft pool. Still has some size to put on - hence if you throw him in the inside midfield he isn't as effective as other big bodies. At 190cm, he's going to get there long term.

I’m a self confessed big Coffield fan. Northern Knights at full strength had enough decent inside midfielders to be able to use Coffield as a playmaker off half back. Those midfielders aren’t better players than him (in fact they’re slightly inferior), but they could win enough footy to allow Coffield to play in the position from which he would most likely start an AFL career (medium rebounding defender).

He is an excellent reader of the opposition inside 50 kicks, and is one of the best intercept marks in the TAC of the last 2-3 seasons. He can play midfield too, but his ability to play in defence is a clear point of difference versus Rayner, Cerra, Dow, LDU, Stephenson, Higgins, etc. Brayshaw is another who is equally adept in defence as midfield or attack. Hence I rate him higher than many others here as well.

Hi bish,
If coffield has been so consistent throughout the season and boasts high potential to be a very damaging outside/inside mid then y isn’t he being talked up at a top 8 pick by many journalists?
What are the doubts surrounding him?

I like Fogs as a 2nd rounder, elite tackling machine - goes under the radar. Numbers are always very good. Impressive me a lot live at RAMS Arena v Calder later in the season.
I've read his skills are very good too? Also seen him compared to Zac Merrett, how fair is that?

What can you tell me about Lachlan Fogerty he seems to be a huge chance to be drafted by the Lions according to Cal Twomey

On Fogarty - 178.8cm, 75.5kg

Tackling machine, wins plenty of the football - good clearance/inside 50 numbers. Pretty clean right foot kick. Classy balanced midfielder. One who has flown under the radar.

As for comparisons, I refuse to do them. Not sure he'll ever win as much inside/centre bounce ball as Merrett, but I like him across half forward where he can pressure players and tackle.

Not sure why others don't rank him - but everyone rates players differently. I've had Coffield that high since the Champs. I'll back my judgement over others - so who have hardly seen Coffield play live.

Straight from the Inside Footy guide "Coffield appeals to AFL recruiters because he can play in most positions. Highly skilled, clean and athletic"

That's a pretty good summary - the concern will be over whether he will be able to win enough contested ball, but adding size will help that long term moving from a general defender to inside midfielder.

Hey Bishop,

Wondering about your thoughts on why Cameron Rayner is so highly rated aside from his X Factor and power?

Has he shown he can accumulate elite midfield numbers this year? Or are we looking at a medium forward who just kicks goals and applies pressure? Do you have any TAC or school footy stats that show his worth?

Cheers

Cam put simply can do things that others cannot in the draft pool.

X-Factor is plenty, but he takes contested marks inside 50 as well as anyone and can burst away at stoppages. Plays a lot like Christian Petracca.

While he hasn't had a damaging 30 disposal game etc - you can put that down to his endurance at the moment, which holds him back from being a "full-time" midfielder, whereas at the moment he's probably a fwd/mid rather than inside midfielder.

So his numbers aren't as great compared with other top midfielders in the pool, but he's the best fwd/mid in it. Hits the scoreboard and applies pressure, as well as being capable of marking inside 50.

Obviously Higgins is linked to us at 11 a lot but what are the chances of us pulling a surprise pick like O'Brien or Murphy? If you were the GWS list manager which of the three would you be most keen on?

Lot of people have linked Higgins to GWS - I'm not so sure at the moment. Get the feeling they might take a tall in Brander/Naughton.

I can't see anyone taking O'Brien before Brisbane's picks in the teens. They've watched Nathan Murphy a fair few times - Emma Quayle watched him when he booted a bag of 7 against Geelong Grammar back in May. So they'll consider him I reckon.

Who would I take? Sticking to my rankings - Higgins, Murphy, LOB in that order out of those three players.

How would you compare Rayner and Bonar, who to me seem to have a hell of a lot of similar attributes and traits?

I get that it's difficult given that Bon is coming off two badly injury interrupted years, and as such was probably going at well below his full capacity, but they have so much in common:

Similar size.
Both strong and powerful/explosive.
Both fast.
Both terrific overhead in contested/pack marking.
Both good at winning their own ball in the midfield and can be a marking target forward.
Both tackle ferociously.
Both have good leaps.
Both need to work on their endurance....

If they both develop to their full capacity at AFL level, do you see them playing really similar type roles, or are their some key differences that I'm missing? Maybe Bon more mid/fwd and Cam more fwd/mid?

Fair enough. I really rate Murphy and I think he'll be better in the long run than Higgins so I would definitely be thrilled if we pick him up

They're pretty similar.

Though I reckon Bonar is more likely to just be a pure midfielder, whereas I think Cam will always be that fwd/mid or mid/fwd.

Bonar's forward work I reckon isn't as good as Cam's - but I project Bonar to be a better midfielder long term.
