Hey Bishop, I couldn't find a thread about mature age recruits this year but surely Patrick Wilson from Sturt is a certainty. 21-22 years of age, has had some injury troubles but looks to be over that now. I remember he was very stiff to miss out on his draft year.

He's absolutely tearing it up in SANFL at the moment. Has brilliant skills and is a great kid.
I really hope you get drafted, Patrick.

Where do you rate this kid Bishop Callum Coleman-Jones ?

Also if we end up with say #13 & #16 which players do you think ?

What would you think of say Coffield ,Balta & Naish return for our 3 selections this year if they were not traded out

I have Coleman-Jones as a late pick if that - talls either go top 25 or they don't make it historically. For me he isn't Top 25. Clunks contested marks - but kicking is ugly, (all be it kicking at 70 % yesterday)

I reckon those three Coffield, Balta and Naish would be ideal - but reckon Balta has potential for top 10.

I don't watch the SANFL unless I need to watch someone particularly and Wilson is not one of those that I watch it for.

Vic metro should win every game from now on you'd hope with those rankings !!

Well they aren't tipped to go undefeated and win the champs for no reason! Will have more drafted in the top range than Country will.

Nathan Murphy's a new name Bishop. Missed out on the metro squad if I'm not mistaken. What can you tell us about him?

Have seen Murphy play a fair bit over the last few years in the Brighton Grammar school team - playing in the same team as Andy McGrath last year and having some gun opponents this year when I've seen them play. Wasn't considered for the Metro squad at all.

Has booted bags of goals as a medium forward in the APS school footy comp - but only started playing forward in about May as he's been a defender for the last few years. Lots of interest at club land and one long time AFL recruiter rated him a 5 (out of 5) to be possibly drafted.

Clean at ground level, marks well for a medium tall. Goalkicking does need a touch of work (but he hasn't played there at all in the past) - but I like him as a defender. Late addition to the Sandy Dragons squad so will play for them in the school holidays in defence.

Is also Australian/Victorian cricketer so bit like Sutherland will have a decision on his hands. But looking at the list of players with managers, he has one - so might be a sign there's enough interest with AFL clubs.

Can you tell me much about Charlie Ballard? Massive 195cm for a wingman and around 80kg apparently. What kind of player is he and does he have potential as a big bodied mid or a kpp?

Have only seen Ballard once from my recollection and don't have a lot of go off (Chris25 knows far more than me about the SA guys and I won't pretend to know them as in depth as he does - so worth asking him)

195cm 81kg - looking at his numbers he's been playing outside averaging 20.5 disposals (8 contested) in the SANFL U18s which suggests I don't think he'll be a big bodied mid BUT

Had 20 disposals (11 contested) on Saturday for SA playing through the midfield. Will see him play this Saturday.

Ballard goes to my school and he's definitely key position height. Hopefully get to see him play school footy after the champs. Real x-factor on the wing at that height.

Hi Bishop, You have sam hayes renked 7th/8th i think, Do you believe he will go that high in the actual draft keeping in mind clubs seem extremely reluctant to select Ruckman (which he probably will be in the afl after 5 years) with a top 10 pick ? Aslo looking at how the ladder sits and the teams on the bottom
Brisbane
Carlton
StKilda (Hawks Pick)
North
Gold Coast
Fremantle
West Coast
StKilda
Bulldogs
Brisbane (Port pick)

There is a very good chance that Hayes could slide all the way to Richmonds 1st selection at #12-#15

whats your gut feel

I watched him play against WA and he was one of the standout players for mine. Looked to be playing in the midfield from what I noticed. Was a touch outside, but still did some very good work. I liked his marking ability and for a skinny looking kid, did not seem to mind the contest.

Only based on the one game and watching WA v SA, he looks like a potential top 25/30 pick for mine. I was almost more sold on his game than the potential number 1 picks game.

It's an interesting debate - few clubs I've spoken to see Hayes as a fwd first, ruck second. Whereas some people have it the other way round. As you've alluded to - ruckman always slip as per Grundy and English have in recent times.

Hayes would fit in nicely at Freo I would've thought - but it's too early to place anything to any club because the order always changes between now and the grand final & then again in trade week which will probably be bigger than last year.

Yes he could slip - but that might come down to whether clubs might take him thinking he's a forward (IE: 2 metre Peter @ Gold Coast) or as a ruckman. Early days at the moment.

Do you think with the draft being supposedly shallow that clubs will draft kids in the 2nd/3rd rounds not many would have heard of outside clubland?

Definitely think clubs will be looking 'outside the square' more-so than they normally do in a deep pool. School footy is a big focus and probably gets more scouted each year I watch. State leagues will get looked at, but it wouldn't surprise me to see 1-2 plucked out of local leagues in Victoria which might surprise a few.

With about 30-40 "draftable" players at a lock in most peoples eyes - those players in the remaining 30 picks on draft night might be a fair bit of lottery. I clearly remember one head recruiter telling me last year "player X is not good enough to be drafted" in September and the player ended up being a late national draft pick - so every club seeing the lesser likes different.

Believe Sutherland Landt and Murphy all played in U/15 Vic cricket team together. Talented bunch

I've speculated about this on the Brisbane board. With the rookie list still in place, we might not see clubs clearing out lists like last year, but rather using just two or three picks at the draft and upgrading a player or two from their rookie list.

I can see clubs trading more aggressively and drafting less.
This is not the year to rebuild through the draft unless you have top 20picks.
The saints, Richmond and Brisbane are in nice positions.
Hawthorn not so much ............

Brett Anderson's raised it a few times on radio but the one to look out for is clubs signing players on 1 year contracts who would be out of contract this year. Reckon 3 picks at the draft will suffice for most clubs.

Agree completely.

I was waiting for everyone to get a chance to see Charlie Ballard. I'm a big fan of the SA team as a whole, but I always had him as one of the more draftable players this year.

Primarily an outside type, he's also played a bit at CHB for his school. That's where I see him being developed long term, that third tall defender. The same path that Taylin Duman is taking at Fremantle. He was generally rated a 40-60 prospect last year, was a surprise to see him available as a rookie. And I think Ballard is about the same.

But in a weaker draft crop, a versatile 195cm prospect could climb the board pretty easily if he keeps performing.
