Definitely think clubs will be looking 'outside the square' more-so than they normally do in a deep pool. School footy is a big focus and probably gets more scouted each year I watch. State leagues will get looked at, but it wouldn't surprise me to see 1-2 plucked out of local leagues in Victoria which might surprise a few.

With about 30-40 "draftable" players at a lock in most peoples eyes - those players in the remaining 30 picks on draft night might be a fair bit of lottery. I clearly remember one head recruiter telling me last year "player X is not good enough to be drafted" in September and the player ended up being a late national draft pick - so every club seeing the lesser likes different.
Fremantle i personally dont believe they would be interested as they have a few similar types 8 players that ar Ruck or Ruck/Fwd all 200 cm+ with 5 being under 25. I think their priority would be more inside mid or KPD

Apeness -200cm 105kgs - 22 yo
Pearce - 200cm 98kgs - 22 yo
Clarke - 203cm 98kgs - 27 yo
Taberner - 199cm 98kgs - 24 yo
Darcy - 201cm 111kgs - 19yo
Strnadica 200cm 94kgs - 19 yo

Griffin - 201 104kgs - 31 yo
Sandilands - 211cm 118cm - 35 yo

Brett Anderson's raised it a few times on radio but the one to look out for is clubs signing players on 1 year contracts who would be out of contract this year. Reckon 3 picks at the draft will suffice for most clubs.

What radio station is Brett Anderson on? Being in Brisbane, we don't get a lot of AFL media outside of Foxtel. Mainly listen to Twomey's and Anderson's podcasts.

Looking at that list - how many of them have experience at AFL/were high draft picks. Statistically tall forwards not in the top 25 don't make it. I can't ever see Strnadica coming on and was amazed he got drafted last year. Thought they took Darcy way too early for my liking.

Sandilands can't play forever and will Jono Griffin & Zac Clarke both be there again at the end of the year after Sandi has re-signed? I'm not so sure.

Pearce plays as a defender too.

SEN 1116 in Melbourne. Worth just jumping on their website, normally they upload the audio from whenever he's on. Does a 'trading places' segment each Wednesday from Midday - worth a listen. Audio is in this link below on SEN Afternoons + as you mention his podcast is well worth a listen.

Yes Sandi has re signed a 1 year deal and seems to be the way teams are going these days after 30 but the way sandilands was talking he seemed like he would continue a couple more.

Puple's rate Apeness and Darcy very highly and Taberner looks to have slotted in up foward and looks to be favoured , Griffin is the player that would be on the edge and Clarke is a free agent. Just dont think they would draft another 200cm player with a top 10 selection when they need mids Urgently

who knows

Now how can we get Balta,Hayes & Coffield with only 2 first rounders ......... We need to upgrade 1 of our 3rd rounders to a pick in the teens
Miles,Edwards or Lemon ?

3rd rounder not worth anything in this draft - don't think too many clubs will be picking in that range.

Lennon tested the market last year not much, Edwards I doubt leaves and Miles isn't worth much considering what Richmond would get for him.

Also noticed you have Naish at #26 - Stop talking him up ;)

Kid wont make it :p

I agree - Freo has lots of rucks but:
(1) Zak Clarke probably has a degenerative injury and has not looked like getting anywhere near the park. Was offered a one year life-line and there is a good chance he is gone at the end of the year;
(2) Griffin is near the end but has also been a bit in the way of getting Darcy full time rucking opportunities at Peel - may be retained as a backup but also would be a decent chance of retirement;
(3) Apeness is going through a second knee reco, and even he gets on the park is likely to play more forward and ruck. Given we have got very little out of him, he could be close to delistment as well or relegation to the rookie list;
(4) Strnadica - has shown talent particularly as a forward and looks great in the flashes but doesn't have the fitness atm, but given he has had the opportunities to get fit already I suspect (as you say) he is not likely to make it.
(5) Pearce is a key defender and has had a broken leg.
(6) Taberner is in and out of the side and is only now rucking because being a backup ruck is about the only way he can be justified in a team that is pretty horrible atm.

Darcy has been going really well in the WAFL - still I do partially wonder though how he will go at the next level.

The_Gun - we would not be after key defenders - arguably that is where we are strong with Cox and Logue* (who have shown a bit in their first year) added to Hamling and Pearce with Collins also there (Dawson is also there as well). Johnson may go another year as well.

The mids are an interesting one - we are being smashed a bit in this area but we do seem to have decent prospects in this area and we presumably will pick Jason Carter in 2018 through the academy who was looking like being the best WA mid this year in the U18 before injuring his knee. We probably have speed covered but height will become a problem particularly if we can't keep Fyfe and Mundy continues his slow down. It also depends what they were drafting Logue* as (or what they think he will be ultimately. I can see us looking at a tallish mid prospect if they fell (say a Rayner or Fogarty) - don't think it will happen though.

Most freo supporters would love a true tall KPF but there aren't likely to be any apart from Hayes and Brander(arguably not his best position) and it is unlikely the latter would be at our first pick anyway even factoring a further fall down the ladder. Most fans would love Sam Hayes to be chosen with our first pick (As a ruck /forward) but I suspect that is not how the actual recruiters will see it. There are strong and multiple rumors that the club is interested in Oscar Allen but I can't see him going at our first pick particularly as he is not really modern KPF height (mind you I can't see him being there with a 2nd pick in the third round)

The other area I could see us going is small forward - with Ballantyne nearly finished, Walters spending more time in the middle, Crozier not very consistent, Grey and Deluca not really better than B grade and ??? over Bennell if there was a gun small forward I can see that being the focus. None of the potentials (IMO Higgins, Spargo) have done enough to say emphatically PICK ME!! and I still feel this are could just as easily be addressed with a later pick, but you never know.....

Hi Bishop, You have sam hayes renked 7th/8th i think, Do you believe he will go that high in the actual draft keeping in mind clubs seem extremely reluctant to select Ruckman (which he probably will be in the afl after 5 years) with a top 10 pick ? Aslo looking at how the ladder sits and the teams on the bottom
Brisbane
Carlton
StKilda (Hawks Pick)
North
Gold Coast
Fremantle
West Coast
StKilda
Bulldogs
Brisbane (Port pick)

There is a very good chance that Hayes could slide all the way to Richmonds 1st selection at #12-#15

whats your gut feel

There a few if and but to get there..... We want outside foot skills and pace but if it's not on the board and we can offload Tippett we will definitely interested

Worth a look - but he doesn't have near as good marking/goalkicking that Paddy did. But different players, Paddy better from the goalsquare. Tom moves better up the ground.

Was the VicC VicM game typical of TomMcCartin?.. did not really look threatening as a forward option... then not many tall VicC forwards really stood out. Not sure who id pick so far

Played a much better game the week before at TAC Cup level. Showed some of the Tom McCartin traits, with his good marks overhead moving up the ground. Wasn't a day that the tall forwards stood out (just glimpses from all) - and infact I reckon not too many Champs games see it happen (talls dominating) as personally reckon that the density rules can affect it at times.

Posted this in the Vic M and Vic C thread. First time to LDU and as you picked out those early things he did stand out. Was dissapointed for the rest of his game. Was pretty impressed by Rayner and like LDU did go quiet as the game wore on. If you had pick 1 out of the two who would you go for? We need to keep building our midfield desperately but Rayner, eventhough his endurance is lacking at the moment, looks like a person who could win a game off his own boot almost, a match winner. What are your thoughts on the two?

Still not sure why Cerra is not being discussed in the same conversation at the moment.

I'd take the pure midfielder Davies-Uniacke - there's no guarentee Rayner's endurance improves as large as everyone expects. You can't be running a sub 12 beep and then suddenly become an elite endurance athlete.

Rayner is a forward than pinch hits in the midfield - yes he's damaging/powerful/explosive & superb overhead which are great traits, at AFL level if you can't run you get found out.

Davies-Uniacke is a star - Saturday was by far his worst game of the season and that first 27 minutes of game time was still elite.

Both Davies-Uniacke & Rayner went quiet in the second half compared to what they did in the first half.

& for what it's worth - reckon you should be looking at Adam Cerra.

Thought Sutherland was just ok.

Too much hype about him.

Only one or two contested marks and a goal. Ten disposals.

Mid strength beer at best

He was never going to come in and star - 10 disposals, five marks was a decent output in a match where no tall stood out for either team.

It was a solid game and he'll be better for the run. The hype is worth it - he's the best forward in the draft and no club left the game (on Saturday) not going back on what they've thought over recent weeks seeing him play for Scotch.

Still not sure why Cerra is not being discussed in the same conversation at the moment.

Agree - best midfielder in the draft for me other than Luke Davies-Uniacke. Critically underrated by some which I can't believe - was super on Saturday in the best players in the midfield for Vic Metro. I have him in conversation for the No.1 pick. Smart, good decision maker and kicks it well on his right foot.

Thanks Bishop for your insights. Bit difficult for us up North to get an insight into these players bar the info that is provided by the likes of yourself and co. and the games in the national champs.

I saw about ten minutes of the game on the way to the MCG on Saturday. I was really drawn to watching Tom McCartin. The guy doesn't stop moving and working. He just looked like he had such a great frame and workrate for an afl player. I'm surprised that he doesn't seem to be rated especially given his age, limited preparation and brother. I'm happy for him to end up at Port if no one wants him.

How would you know about his "limited preparation" if he is just some random Country kid you happened to stumble over and watch for all of 10 minutes on the way to the AFL game?

Shouldn't have had that extra pot at The Royal and you might have seen 40 minutes of him instead.

Looked at his number. Google and big footy are your friend. There was a recent article about him. Missed all of last year and had a hip injury. I thought he played like an afl player. Had some things to do at home. Missed train! I almost stayed for more of the match but that would have been silly.

It would do Tom's draftability no end of good if he could have a sticky fingered game , caped off with some good kicks at goal. When watching the Vic game.. it seemed the forwards on the M side were more dangerous. DeKoning looked a good size but really didn't look too threatening.
