I just can't shake the feeling of being underwhelmed by this years draft crop.

Might be the year to trade pick one down to a couple of top 10's if you can. St Kilda with 6 & 8 at the moment might be a good deal if you can get it. Can't see Ballenden going before then so you wouldn't be wasting the true value of a no. 1 pick. I reckon the first noticeable drop in class comes at about pick 9 or 10

Is next years draft predicted to have great depth as well as great top end quality at this very early stage?

In short - yes it is far deeper.

Vic Metro are probably a tiny bit down, but SA appear to be very strong already with a solid group coming through. Throw in a stronger WA - it should shape to be deeper. 2016 pool is a 'TAC Cup' draft as a few recruiters have labelled it to me, most the picks in the draft will have come through the TAC Cup and that's recognised by the majority of Victorians invited to the combines.

Is it too early for a 2018 discussion thread for you guys Bish?

I'm happy to chat next year's crop whenever! I won't open a seperate thread in a sense til 2018 (as it may get confusing), but happy to answer any Qs in here.

Quick question relevant to the Dockers quest for a KPF; in your opinion should we consider pulling the pin on Brander if available, or hold for next year?

I expect us to finish in a similar position on the ladder, but the general feel is that there are likely to be more KPFs available.

The other complication for Freo is that Hill the younger looks super exciting and a very likely top pick. There is no doubt we will be interested in him.

Depends on finishing position, while you can say 2018 is chock full of talls they may already be off the board before then: Jack Lukosius (Pick 1), Max King (Pick 2) is how I would have it now, not to mention Bailey Williams (KPF/Ruck) & Ben King (KPD) who I'd also have inside the top 5-10 names. Then Nick Blakey (SS Academy) - so if you get it wrong and 'wait' 12 months you might miss it entirely.

I would have nothing wrong with taking Brander this year if I was Fremantle. He's a quality player and one that I've rated highly for the last few years. Think Freo will highly consider Nathan Murphy with their second rounder too.

Will Essendon also get Darcy Denham next year?

Next years draft (not the kids, the actual draft night) is going to be awesome.

Why?

Live pick trading.

Look at the "likely" teams that will be down the bottom and their possible list needs. If you're a team in need of KPP talent, likely you don't properly address this need in this years draft.

There are going to be mid tier teams desperate to get up the top to draft a KPP. There are some real exciting small/mid players currently in the top 10 mix. The only thing missing are a couple of top tier contested beasts, and there might be some kids who step up to that role.

Not enough rounds to really do live pick trading, I cannot see much happening to be honest.
Future picks.

As the GWS recruiter on Road to the Draft mentioned in Twomey's latest podcast, open the future pick trading right up. Get rid of the restrictions, such as only trading one year in to the future.

I do not believe there will be a lot of trades. There might be a couple of early ones if teams are willing to pay overs to go after some one at the top of the board. Or teams looking to trade up only a couple of places, or even one place.

Remember last year, GWS traded pick 3 and pick 16 to Brisbane for pick 2, 31, 51 & 60. I can something like that going down.

Say Brisbane draft first and pick LDU, and Carlton draft second and pick Cerra in this years draft, St Kilda might approach the North with the third pick and propose a trade of pick 6 (originally Hawthorns 2017 first pick) and their own 2018 first round pick, for the third pick in the 2017 draft and the other Norths 2018 second round pick.

Haven't seen him play - can't comment.

Live trading will come in next year - BUT speaking to some recruiters they don't want it, but I think the newer/younger head recruiters seem happy to push it along.

At the end of the day, these trades can be made in trade week - no real difference doing them on the night of the draft. Yes you sometimes can't tell who you're gunning to take at trade period, but generally you have a good idea.

AFL need to find a way to stop it dragging on for a long period of time, we're not the same as the NFL.I don't think it'll be that exciting, are 2-3 trades of picks really going to make it more interesting? If a mid tier team really wants Max King - they'll do a trade of picks in trade week, rather than do it on draft night where it might not get accepted and the player (King) who they focused on and really loved isn't going to be their selection...

Excellent!

With the hype around the King boys, the SA duo plus Hill from WA and Thomas from Tassie it looks like Blakey is going to be back end of top 10 at best. It's early doors but is that the way you see the top 6 looking for next year? What's your range for Blakey and based on that should we be trying to bank points through this years trade period if we are able to?

Blakey will choose the Lions as a father son anotherletdown.;)

They have a 'like' rating but what this board really needs is an 'optimistic' rating. You would have fully earned it!

No chance he'll want to sit behind all your other talls... still, as long as he doesn't go to North I'll be happy. Screw that mob of toss pots
