Phantom Draft Bishop's 2017 Draft Thread

Bishop I feel you are drastically under rating Aiden Bonar. He was the best 16 yo in the country prior to his knee injuries. Despite the knee, he hasn't lost any explosiveness or agility.

A Ray's talent manager was recently quoted as saying more AFL scouts have asked about Bonar than any other player at the Ray's. That includes LDU.

He's been eased back into things playing forward however will be a beast mode mid at AFL level. He's a mutated version of Bont/Charlie Curnow. 190/90 bohemeth with a booming leg.

Internally at Haileybury he's rated one of the best kids to come through the school system.

The hype is yet to hit mainstream media/draft watchers. I'll be extremely surprised if the Pies skip him at 6....if they do, Saints better pounce at 7/8 or I'll lose my shit. He'll be the best of the draft.

Get on board the Bonar train...BT will.

I've said for a while I think he could well wind up a top 10 pick- I even took him in the Big Footy Phantom Draft in July when many hadn't heard of him!! The hype is there for me.

I've probably seen him more than others - but you can only go off what you can see. Not under rating him, because from what we've seen you couldn't say just off his form he's been a top 20 players because he hasn't - but his traits and moments have been very good. Will he move up from my last rankings, yes - But that's due to be able to watching him a lot closer lately. I wouldn't peg him inside my top 15 just yet though.

How does Bonar's exposed form compare with, say, Nakia Cockatoo's one-game draft year?
I'm no expert but I think Nakia's game which I saw was just WoW imo explosive pace out of the centre square, he kicked that goal first or second possession from a centre clearance. I don't think Bonar hasn't done that yet.

Bonar is a completely different player aswell, not many players to compare him to but from the little stoppage work I've seen from him he is similar to Fyfe with his clean hands and how he approaches the taps. Very good at getting his arms up and releasing and he is good at getting his body over the ball to make sure that first possession is perfect. He also tackles hard so can see him being a very impactful inside mid

Very similar player to Bont

Different players hard to compare.

Bonar's probably hasn't been as good as Cockatoo - but I reckon there's more there that will appeal to clubs when they look at potential & how good he might be projection wise in the future.

Bish, you still reckon Naish slips to the second round?

Yep - still expect a bid after Richmond's 2nd pick in the first round at this stage.

I know your question is directed at Bishop and i would like to know his opinion as well but to me he just isnt worth a selection in the top 17 picks but more around #25

Last 2 weeks there has been a few players really come up and put their names up to be in the top 15 picks
Strong inside mids,KKP and elite outside players with great skills and pace are more top 15 and Naish does not tick these boxes

He's been playing across HBF at times - but his decision making is poor & he tries to pull of the miracle kick.

For me if he played forward all year (where I've seen him play some very good games) maybe I'd rate him higher.

At times he can be a bit 'soft' - but I think he can develop into a decent HFF/FP in the future for the Tigers. Just think there's plenty ahead of him at the moment in players who could go 1st round.

Hey Bish any good player from the Corowa region this draft?

No idea - don't know it all that closely. Sorry!

Bishop

To me that means Bonar is more polarising and scouts havent yet settled on an opinion of him. It certainly does not necessarily suggest they rate him above LDU.

Quick question,

With all the talk it's a weak draft compared to recent drafts, the first 20-25 seeem to be starting to stack up competitively against recent years??

Falls away after that though?? Am I right in my analysis??

Question to Mr Sandringham Hedge Fund and Bishop.

What is Will Walker's fitness like? and is there any impediment to it getting better in an AFL Club?

He looked likely in the semi final. Then in the Granny he looked like he was gonna tear it apart until the Dragons midfield went to sleep in the 3rd and he got starved out until thrown onto the ball to get them moving again himself.

He looked a little buggered with the effort, but he's got IT as an excellent AFL prospect imo.

Hey bud

Good thread.

Agree re Miers - I have had him pegged around 20 for a long time.

Re Walker I am a bit more bullish than you. yeah his kick at times is average but he plays inside the contest a lot. what i really like about him is he can move between forward and mid and have fantastic impact. I've been bullish for a while.

Stephenson is a top 6 pick for me. He has just been outstanding in the back half of the year. Some of his moments in the last 6 weeks been as good as anyones.

Parish kicking is a big issue. Keep hearing in the games I havent watched him its gotten better but in the games I've watched it hasnt. As you say a clearance machine but he is a taller Mark McGough.

Agree with those summations on all 4 players.

1. Yes
2. No
3. Both

I had Miers pegged as a 2nd rounder coming into tonight, things didn't change for me. But probably thought he was more 30s than 20s, I've got him ranked outside my top 30 though.

McLean strong first half, but lacks speed/athleticism/agility - which those big men tend to struggle

Constable just doing what he's done all year, people only starting to wake up now.
From all accounts Miers had a good game kicking 7 goals. He can turn most defenders inside out and he reads the ball well when it comes to him, however; if you put a defender with speed and agility who can also read the ball well on him he doesn't go as well. Congrats to him on a good year.

Hey Bishop

We've had an unsubstantiated rumour on the Port boards that we're keen on Jackson Ross, and in keeping with the silly season - I'm running with it for all its worth.

I've not found much on him other than that he is an outstanding athletic prospect with a tennis background (covers the ground very well - which Hinkley will love), and is a 192cm stringbean, goalkicking wingman/HFF, something we desperately need.

What I'm curious about:
- is he an athlete first, footballer second? We don't tend to do too well with those types. We need footballers.
- how is his kicking, both in general play and for goal? We need someone who can spot up the odd target, other than Polec :)

Cheers, enjoy GF week. Jealous.

Walker has great speed once up and firing, still good off the mark, but better when accelerating from 80% to 100%. Endurance has improved markedly over the two years in TAC. He runs track and field and will easily improve with a more targeted AFL fitness program.

Always looks buggered. Has improved his physical resilience dramatically since the start of last year. Was initially a bit of a softie, but not now.

Not for me, I'd take last years top 20-25 over this year, players in last years crop who were in the teens that I'd suggest would be top 10s this year.

13.13 on the beep. Not a bad effort earlier in the year. Of course it can/will improve at the next level.

haha well I can certainly confirm the rumour. Probably one of the teams most keen in Ross.

For me, he's an athlete first - footballer second: But that's only slightly in that favour, has really improved over the last two years and someone who I've really liked in that 30+ bracket all season. Has a big upside and sometimes you've gotta way that up as he's a nice size and his footballing can really improve.

Kicking is pretty good on either foot and he can kick it long off his right foot - played HFF/CHF/Wing throughout the year and has been decent. Booted 29 goals I think it was in APS school footy season too. Has scope to develop into a good footballer.

Cheers Bishop (and Knightmare and D_P_S , thanks for all answering my q's)

Good to have a range of views on someone we might pick up

Hey Bishop, I'd love to get your thoughts on Oscar Chapman (PAC/North Adelaide)? From all reports, gained a lot of momentum in the second half of the year and could go National Draft.

Never seen him play so cant comment, medium forward - nice set of hands. That's about all I can give unfortunately - Lot of clubs liked his work in SA school footy. Came on late in the season and played games for North Adelaide.
