I just posted something in a different thread re: Yarran, and an idea for a magic trick suddenly occured to me.

From a study of negative posts in that thread (and the million other threads on the topic), I've noticed the following reasons constantly surface as to why we should'nt have drafted Yarran with our first rounder:

a) You dont draft on potential!
b) Has shown nothing this year!
c) Take the ready made gun NOW!
d) Has issues outside of footy OR massive go home factor!

So here is a little magic trick to take your minds off all the negativity:

Imagine... suddenly we have been transported to Bizzaro world. A world where it is the 2008 Draft all over again.

And remember... What happens in Bizzaro world... stays in Bizzaro world.*

Bizzaro World Melbourne have just drafted Rich with pick one to bolster their Midfield, and Bizzaro West Coast have just had a brain snap and passed over Nic Nat with pick 2.

Carlton have the next pick in this strange land... and YOU are Bizzaro World Wayne Hughes.

Nic Nat, Yarran, and Watts remain.

Who's name do you call out?

Sounds pretty easy doesnt it? Lets not repeat the same mistake right?

Make you choice now... then click the spoiler below for the correct answer...

Check crtitisims a, b, c, and d (above)... Bet you can apply them to the player you selected.

Its magic!

Clearly, this experiment shows that all three players are total hacks.

FWIW I chose Bizzaro world Nic Nat.

Then again, we would've picked the real one should he (by some miracle) have been available.

Hard to overlook Nic Nat, but considering we have plenty of up and coming ruckmen, ala Kreizer, Hampson, Jacobs, we really need a gun CHF and given time Watts is the man!!!

I voted Watts, because we need a tall marking forward. Truth is at this stage I'd be happy with any of them. Who knows how any of them will turn out? - well, aside from the complete knobs who ejaculate "Rich!" every thirty seconds.

I would have taken Nic Nat ahead of anyone.
Same... but there was no way (in the real world) that he was going to be available at our pick.

Point is, Im happy with Yarran... for now. Nice to know we have a bloke in the wings with his ability.

Getting a little sidetracked by the way, the point of the thread isn't to discuss hypotheticals but to attempt to debunk (in an interactive way) the points being made about Yarran in a million other threads such as:

  • You don't pick players on potential with top round picks.
  • He hasnt shown anything at AFL level!
  • We should have drafted a ready made gun.
  • You dont draft kids with go home factor.
  • You dont draft players with issues outside of footy.
Etc, etc.

Pretty much all the above points can be applied (in spades) to picks 1 and 2 from last year - Nic Nat and Watts (whom from the early poll results a majority of posters would have preferred over Yarran).

Hopedully this can put some peoples opinions in perspective.

Easy - Nat. Has the body and athleticism to play key posn so being unsure where the other two might be able to play - I will opt for his potentiality (my word) :)

Come on Mal, you cannot expect us to read all of such a long OP :p

Something short like a riddle next time - oh yeah but that was a riddle :(
Ill bear that in mind for next time ;)

I was trying to be creative in my defense of Yarran... as a plus, the poll results have been interesting however.
