Seems like the Dons have got the final details nutted out and that Orange will now be their new major sponsor.

How long before some guru from marketing at either the Dons or Orange put forward the
'notion' that it would be good for 'marketing' if the Bomber were to change the Red stripe for an Orange one???

I reckon we will see it at least by 2002 and maybe even next year.

What do the Dons fans think? Or anyone for that matter.

We can now start calling them the Tangerine Queens!

it wont happen. Im pretty sure the admin are pretty aware of the feeling about changing our colours, even if only for one game.

It'd be an absolute disgrace if they gave us the orange stripe, unlikely as that is, and I for one would be protesting in every way possible to the club if they considered it.

thats what I think grend.

If you check on the Essendon board, this thread has already begun.

Here is what has been said regarding the new sponsor according to afl.com.au :

"The Bombers will be with telecommunications company Orange for the next three years, having split with the Transport Accident Commission after a nine-year association.

But Essendon chairman Graeme McMahon said the team would not change its guernsey under the new deal."

As soon as I realised Orange would be sponsoring us, I thouught about the possibility, or inevitability of them "ASKING" us to wear an orange sash.

But, realistically, we don't need the money.

One of Esendon's most marketable qulities, is that we have NEVER changed our guernsey. Ever. No test pattern stlye pre-season jumper, for example. Even Carlton have tried an Ansett Cup jumper.

That marketable comcept would be lost if we went for an orange sash, for one match. I think those at Essendon want to retain the colours of the club, and they want to be known as the only team to never change their guernsey.

I see your points, Arch,Dan. Still regardless of tradition you know that the people from Orange will probably always niggle away. Add to that people within the Bombers admin who will look at a potential marketing bonus "well $250,000 for ONE game, hey they just said $350,00" will no doubt go through some administrators head.

I still reckon it will happen, money talks all languages, hell sometimes it screams it from the rooftops!

I suppose it wouldn't be disasterous, since an orange sash would be very much like our jumper now. It wouldn't be much of a change.

However, we have just signed the biggest ever sposorship deal for a team sport in Australian history, so we are not exactly going to be short on funds. I hope we don't do it. i don't think we will

If I were Essendon, I'd get together with "Orange" and make up a rumour that we are going to go with an orange sash. Of course we won't go with an orange sash at all; it's just a rumour.

The media get hold of it, and Orange gets more free publicity. People write into newspapers regarding this "rumour" stating how they disapprove, talkback lines are jammed etc.

And the end result is that Essendon retain their jumper and have NO thought of changing, and Orange get hepas of free publicity.

That's what I'd do if I were Essendon. Use the media to keep your sponsor happy. After all, they're giving us 3 million !

The club can't agree to change the jumper (even for 1 game) without the support of 60% of Essendon members - it's in the EFC constitution.

But saying that - that law applies to AFL Premiership Season matches only so the option is there for pre-season games I guess.

I like your idea of a a rumour. Manipulate the press like they manipulate us.

Not sure on the value of "never changed our jumper" as a marketing tool. I think that jumpers are only sacred once people have something ivested in them ("I died in 4 world wars for that flag etc etc"). Once people are at this stage they are not going to change teams anyway. I can't see a died in the wool (what does that mean ?) Carton supporter switching to the bombers because they have not changed their jumper.

Jumpers appeal to kids (that is why Port's sucks so much). Changing Essendon's jumper would have far mor marketing postives than keeping it the same. Kids buy jumpers, adults don't. With Essendon's massive following with kids they could retire and go and live in Spain on the takings.

As soon as I read Grendel's message, I was wondering how long it would take for Dan to tell us that Essendon had "NEVER changed [their] guernsey".

Once again Dan (I have brought this up on previous occasions), I will ask you why the current Essendon training guernsey is red, WHITE and black and why Essendon wore red, WHITE and black shorts in the pre-season final.

I'm only asking because most of us are sick to death of you telling us all that Essendon have the best colours, nickname, blah blah blah.

Why don't you talk about the shorts, dan ?

And on essendon not needing the money - of course they don't - they can get thier fans to pay through the nose to get a seat a stadium which is too small for thie 'huge' following

And on jumper sponsorship - they don't like the colours to be the same. Take samsung - its blue and white colours stand out on the mainly gold Hawthorn Jumper - that's much better for them than 'blending' in on the Roos Blue jumper for example.

Pessimistic,

How do you explain Ford and Geelong then ? Blue and white, both of them.

And as far as I know, shorts have never been considered part of a jumper. One garment covers your genitals, the other, your torso.

And at Colonial Stadium last year, I recall plent of walkup seats available for all our games. If a $3.25 booking fee is regarded by you as paying through the nose, then you are a tight-ass.

This booking fee, to book seats before games, goes to ticketmaster, anyway - not Essendon.

And you can do this at the MCG too, a venue, which we will play 9 games at in 2001; same as Colonial.

Essendon v Hawthorn was a sell-out (even though there was no advertising of the fact until 1 hour before the start)

As far as I am concerned the game will always be 50,000 plus -anywhere - even at waverley (add the -15% AFL fudge)

And saying the shorts cover the genitals only is splitting hairs (unless you're Hirdy, who probabaly shaves) They changed the strip. Period.
