What about the Bombers wearing black armbands halfway up their arms to show respect for Long & Wallis.
What a load of crap!

That disrespects the purpose of the black arm band- nobody died to my knowledge so why trash the concept of paying respect???

It gives less meaning behind wearing them for people that have passed on, it just cheapens the concept of paying respect.

Stupid idea.

Maybe it was in anticipation of the death of the Essendon ego, or perhaps the Essendon song - they haven't sung that for ages! ?:D

an absolute joke that further demeans the use of the black armband. And yes WCE2000 it seems that if a clubs floor sweepers best freinds great grandfather dies they wear the armband. I reckon AFL players should all get them permanently tattooed on.

If it's true that they wore them for Long, I think its offensive to the real meaning of the black arm band.

If I was a Brisbane player it would have fired me up a bit.

I think the AFL should make a ruling on this - no armbands unless it's a legitmate death which truly relates to the Club.

If it is true, then it is absolutely disgraceful.
It just shows that Sheedy and Essendon think they are above everything else. While Long has been a great player (though I can name 30 better ones over the last decade), no one deserves such a treatment. Who the **** do they think they are.

I just cannot believe their insensitivity and arrogance.

Bloody spot on ,next we will have armbands for a blokes dog who died, keep it for the appropriate purpose.

If the theories as to why Essendon wore black armbands are correct (for Long), what an absolute disgrace.

He is not the only player to miss on playing in a Grand Final. He has already played in 1 (or 2).

Players of the ilk of say, Robert Flower didn't even play in ONE.

I really hope that this is not correct, as it downplays the respect given to those who pass away.

Nobody died, the black armbands half way down their arms were actually to hide the puncture marks for their drips (they got the idea from Brisbane) that they used at half time.

Could not believe it when I heard why they were wearing them. What a joke that demeans the real reason why they are worn. Anyway it backfired, the emotion they tried to build up during the week did not work.
