Would you do a swap.Say
Pick 11 & Ellis if it meant landing us WHE?
I'd imagine GWS will do all they can to keep him, and if he were to ask to leave, we wouldn't be prepared to pay the asking price.

As good as Ellis is, WHE is something else entirely. I couldn't do that deal tho.

Anyone who has read this, I'd just issue a word of caution

The little-known list asset the Tigers do have, and this is the most tantalising one they have for the years to come, is a war chest. Richmond is understood to have significant space under the salary cap – in the realm of seven figures – for next year, which is room they began making years ago to be able to position for free agency.

Its actually a good read generally, but I think this paragraph needs to be taken with a grain of salt. So far we have lost King and Jacko, who were on decent coin, but nothing stellar, so it comes down to how much of that $1m is genuinely for a FA.

I suspect a fair bit of it will be used to retain our kids (we have a wave coming through for new deals in 2015), and some front ending may occur.

Remember while we have $1m now, we need that $1m to remain available for the next 3-5 years if we genuinely want to buy someone in.

Also the guy is a drip, because the only FA off memory even attracting discussions for big coin if Frawley, and I cant see us chasing him. If the cap gap is to be used, it will be for a trade IMO
Jacko is on 400+ and Kingy was on 350. Rance is on 400+ and Foley's contract is killing us too (rumoured to be about 400). Dan Richardson came into fix our contracts, and part of that is front ending some guys like Deledio so when it comes to end of next year only 300-400k of his salary is in the cap after Vets payments.

If we are not paying Newman on the Vets list it suggests to me the problems with our cap from last year were greatly exaggerated. I don't take it with a grain of salt at all i'm very confident we have big cap space for next years FA period.

my understanding on Foley is his deal with heavily performance based given it was done around the time of his injuries (remember some were concerned back then if he was officially done)

On front ending, Lids is the only one we can get away with that, most of the others are 2-3 year deals, so the benefit of such a big move is much less

as good as WHE is, we are trying to build depth in our midfield, not reduce it
Depth can be built by other means. My concern is look at our Mids and after Lids,Cotch and Dusty we struggle with actual matchwinners.I like Ellis and his ability to run but the truth of it all he'll never be that extra matchwinner that we need.WHE is that type we are lacking.Won't happen but i'd do it.

its a massive price to pay for one bloke, esp off the back of Elli's improvement, and that this draft is supposed to be a decent one

Interesting they didn't wait until after the trade period finished to notify of the changes.
Don't they normally hold off the announcement in an attempt to swing any last minute trades of player x (who was to be delisted) to the benefit the club and player. Maybe no hope held out for that group, or just a change in process.

Writing was on the wall for Helbig and O'Hanlon when first year players (Llyod, Gordon, Miles, Lennon) are getting more games.

Was hopeful for Darrou getting a gig and taking over down back - tough gig being 3 years on the rookie wage.

Looking forward to seeing some youth come onto the list and given an opportunity to grow.

We technically have 7 Senior positions available under the 38+2+4 build if we want them, with Thomas and Miles still on the rookie list
Helbig, O'Hanlon, Edwards, Jackson, King + 2 Senior positions currently used for rookie elevations
Miles obviously takes one so we're at 4+2
Thomas stays on the rookie list
Club currently needs to bring in 9 new players
40+4 build = 6+3 new players
39+1+4 build = 5+1+3 new players
38+2+4 build = 4+2+3 new players

Although I assume we'll stick with he 38+2+4 build

List managers talk to each other before the end of the season, they know what currency their players will get

some interesting names there. Reckon a few might be on hold depending upon what we can attract during trade week

nothing there is screaming trade bait
I could see Batch and Donut fetching a worthwhile price. Possibly Dea as well. That said, it would be dangerous to have a fire sale and not retain at least a certain level of depth, even if we're holding onto guys for another year or two who aren't going to take us to the next level.

You would of hoped so with regard to Foley but Craig Cameron messed up a lot of our contracts, i've heard from a few people its a good contract for Nathan a bad one for us.

Its not just lids its anyone who is signed on past next year. You could pay Jack most of his three years this year and next and not pay him much in 2016 knowing he'll be a vet by then. If we've got 500k in the cap this season we'd be stupid not to pay that to any player to get it off our books for next year which creates more space for next season to pay even more guys front ended.

Our cap has been cleared deliberately for a big signing since Dan came on board because Cameron couldn't do it. Whether we make the signing or not is another question but the word has been around all year that we have big space in our cap.

Pretty sad for Darrou and always liked Big O. Helbig just never really got a good chance at it with injuries hurting him.

Arnot to be our next tagger? Big body, loves the rough stuff and a good runner I believe.

Jacko and King probably free up a bit of cap space too wouldn't they?
