If we let Gary Ablett go I'd put two question marks on the end of my pretty reasonable question, rather than one.

I'm Merely pointing out that everyone here is pretty much stating we need outside pace and we let a player with that quality in abundance leave (who also was a tig fan) which baffles me. Don't think I was over the top at all but obviously you seem to think differently?
Its been done to death(Earlier in the year),We offered White a contract that stayed within the parameters of list management requirements for the future(look no further than the Dusty standoff),he was offered more by Port(length wise) and he took it.What did you expect us to do? Bendover on the basis of 1 good season out of 5?

We need a small forward who can kick 35+ goals a season. Jake was good at locking the ball in but he was never going to kick a ton of goals. Gordon isn't the body, speed or athletic type. Dusty is way better and bigger than this type of role. Ballantyne may be a turd, but he's the prototype of what we need.

So:
a
. Is there anyone on our list who can become a Breust/Gunston/Betts/Ballantyne? Actually, we need two, to provide backup.
Nahas isn't getting much of a run at the Roos...

In all seriousness, Jeff Garlett is probably the best one on the market. Our MO over recent years, however, has been picking an achievable target a long way out and getting in their ear about a future move... We may have done this with Garlett, but he seems more the type who has only just recently become on the outer. We don't seem to jump on these types as they come up, rightly or wrongly.

I think he's more referring to the rose colored glasses people wear for the kid

They bitched about him being in and out of games when on our list, but now he's an elite midfielder (apparently)

This is despite the fact Rodney has shown on more than one occasion his stats between this season and last ain't that different. Also he is still used a lot as the sub.
I'm glad somebody said it.

The fact is that two years ago people would have been going on about Matt White in pretty much the same way they now currently rant about Pettard, Thomas, Grigg, and so on: a serviceable but hardly elite level footballer who is a fairly decent depth player but who hardly makes our best 22 going forward.

For my money, the issue with White is that does a few very spectacular things --like that running goal against us this year.

And, of course, people remember those spectacular things and form the impression that White is a spectacular footballer.

But there was a reason he never made it as a regular in our senior team and I dare say that if he was still on our list, then people would be pointing out just how few spectacular things he actually does.

I think this wailing and gnashing of teeth over the departure of Whittey is way over blown, as are estimations of his contribution to Port's success.

EDIT: I made a really unfair comment about Whittey's performance in the EF, overlooking the fact that he was subbed out with a broken jaw. It was very poor on my part and thanks to x_les_x for pointing it out. I've pulled it from the above.

Currently we have 5 spots on our senior list.
Miles will take one of those spots.
I doubt we will have 4 picks in the draft so I reckon we have a FA lined up.
No idea who though

If we did somehow get Adelaide's first rounder for McDonough, it would probably take a deal like both first rounders to GWS for Shiel, their end of round 1 compensation pick and second rounder to get it done. They might even throw in someone like Whiley too.

I don't know whether I'd want to pay that much though, even though I do rate Shiel

Hell, go and look at the full time stats for last weekends EF and look who's at the bottom of Port's list. That's right, Matt White. Five disposals and one goal --in a game where they absolutely dominated their opponent.
I think this wailing and gnashing of teeth over the departure of Whittey is way over blown, as are estimations of his contribution to Port's success.
Ease up he was subbed off during the second with a fractured jaw. Numbers on a page don't tell the whole story have to look at the context of the game aswell.

Yeah, sorry, I don't know why that fact escaped my attention --it's common knowledge he was injured and I should have factored that in. Mea culpa. :(

I'll stick by the rest of it, however: simply put, nobody was screaming about Whittey leaving Richmond. Perhaps it was the club's fault that he never got a full time gig at Tigerland. Maybe it was a failure to develop him properly, or to utilize his talents, or whatever. But the point remains, there just wasn't all that much love for Matt White during his time at Tigerland, so suggestions that we should have bent over backwards to keep him (or suggestions that he was all that keen to stay) strike me as a bit hollow.

Thanks for answering my original question. I was literally unaware of the circumstances surrounding his departure and thought we just let him go no fuss.

Still love seeing players who support the club beforehand be successful, I guess that's why I rate White.

Whether it's maturity or the confidence he gained from securing a long term deal with Port, or simply a change of scenery he is definitely playing better football this year. I agree with you though. I put him in the Jay Schultz bracket - had he stayed at Tigerland it just would have been more of the same.
