I would pay a 2nd rounder but closer to the end. We gave a 2nd for Hampson so I wouldn't be against paying a 2nd for a defender where if he turns injury form around has the potential to be a very solid player down back.
The plus we have is when Rance was out Injured Astubury performed extremely well as the number 1 defender. He does have runs on the board.
Also we need to keep in mind Jetta has 3-4 years of good footy ahead of him Astbury has 6-7
Thats true Astbury did perform when Rance was out so thats a positive. The negative is since then Astbury re-injured himself again.later 2nd rnd yeah maybe if they say its true about this years draft.
Might come down to who decide to keep out of Him and Elton.Tough call.

ive watched him from day one and he was never agile.yes has got even slower which is a worry.Elton really needs to replace Chaplin, but i would be looking outside for a replacement if he doesn't show anything.
Dave reads the ball /game well, but hes slow getting to do what he needs to do physically.
he's the opposite to my wife:DDave has a good brain ,poor body:$
its a conundrum thats for.Astbury that is.

Sydney & Brisbane will need KPD and possibly a few other teams like
freo & Carlton maybe

It would be a good time to play and increase david Astbury's value

Wouldnt be suprised if we got an early 2nd pick for DA, But my prefference would be to try and entice Leppa for a Astbury/Aish deal or GC for a Astbury+Knives/Wright

Astbury/Jetta would also appeal

Best value for us trade wise with Astbury is for a best 22 player as opposed to a pick IMO.

Someone like an Aish who when in form is clear best 22 would be ideal, question is, is he cooked or is it just the environment.

Really think its the enviroment with Aish, I think if he comes to richmond and spends a year just developing certain aspects of his game with Chocco he would be a fantastic player - Really rated him as a junior and does have a good football brain - Things just havnt clicked for him at the lions and is a massive talent.

I really hope that Richmond do talk with him and he would be top end talent that come cheap very similar to Polec did to port

Given Astbury can't hold down a first 22 spot for more than a few weeks due to injuries, I think we need to be realistic about his trade value

IMO he has none, and if he moves it will be via delisting

Clubs don't pay for injured potential any more
Depends how he goes for the rest of the year IMO. If his body holds together and he strings together good form in the VFL he'll attract some decent bids. Less accomplished talls have been traded for 2nd rounders before.

Less accomplished talls get bid on off afl form, not vfl

He is injury prone and that massively discounts the value he has on his limited opportunities to shine to date

Here's a question, when was the last season he didn't spend at least one month on the injury list? I honestly don't think he's had one

True, but he's far from the first developing tall to struggle adapting to the rigours of the game. There's a good chance his body will come good. Clubs will have seen how he was able to hold together our defence at the beginning of 2014 and think him worth a punt based on that IMO. A second rounder is probably optimistic, but like I said, a lot will depend on how he holds up for the rest of the year. Might even get a gig this weekend with TV out.

If he was at Carlton, what would we offer for him?

Even with an afl return, no chance a pick - people are arguing a second round for Yarran remember

We're not the ones desperate for KPP. Plenty of clubs - Carlton, Brisbane, Essendon, Bulldogs, Geelong, Sydney, even Fremantle - could use a healthy Astbury. 'Healthy' being the operative word. Which is why I've said much depends on how he holds up for the rest of the year.

I agree he has little value but at least at richmond you can argue he is behind Rance, Chaplin and grimes, battling to get in. If he was at Carlton he would have played more footy.

I could see him being the steak knives in a trade for someone like yarran

He's missed the bulk of the season already, ship has sailed on calling him healthy

Look at kruezer, he is back and killing it, but people here only want him on a discounted wage because of his injury history, and because as a FA we pay nothing

No chance Astbury will get interest as a second round pick, even in a poor draft like this one

The era of steak knives is gone

Those trades rarely pay off and lock up a spot on the list

As we have seen, clubs now prefer to pick steak knives up as delisted FAs

Harsh on the healthy call, considering the main injury he's had this year was from a friggin stringray barb. He's only had a minor hamstring strain otherwise.

The one just gone, until the stingray incident. He was in line to play round 1.
Until, that means it wasn't complete

Issues like falling on a fence post or slipping in the shower are random, but they all impact on preseasons and the ability for the body to be conditioned

Doesn't matter it was caused by a stinger, it was yet another major injury his already battered body has had to cope and recover from

THAT is why no one will pay for his potential, just like they didn't for Thursfield, or McGuane, or Post, and so on

You realise it happened literally one week before round 1? So he completes sixteen and a half weeks of preseason, misses the last one (which is a lull after a heavy training load anyway) and you call it incomplete? Sounds like shifting the goal posts to me.

Look all I'm saying is, let's see how the year plays out. His body isn't in as bad a shape as you seem to think it is.

The preseason was complete by the time the stingray incident occurred.

Has plenty of exposed AFL form. Was leading our best n fairest last season prior to his injury.

And what happened to all that fitness and conditioning he developed? Much of it would have been for naught once he had to go off his feet for an extended period

The whole point of a preseason is to get your body in good nick for the season proper. Like it or not, Astbury wasn'twasn't
