Re: Rod Blake - "Cats failed my son"

People tend to forget that king has played 192 games for our club and has stuck with us through good and bad times, he deserves to play in the final because his been a great servant. He will probably not play in another GF, but Blake probably will. Rod needs to grow up and stop crying

Re: Rod Blake - "Cats failed my son"

If either Blake can justify a grand final spot based on his performance against Port in Rd21 and Collingwood in the Prelim. then they have something to cry over.BUT as we all saw his efforts were well below what was required!!!

Is this a team game or not? Is the premiership the most important thing or not?Was his performance in those games up to standard or not? If he can answer those Qns honestly he will stay,if he can't then he'll leave.
I hope that he's the kind of bloke that will do the right thing if not good bye and good riddance. :(

Saints off Blake contract

Saints move for ruckman Blake
Stephen Rielly | October 9, 2007|Realfooty

ST KILDA moved straight to the heart of a heated market for ruckmen yesterday by offering a three-year contract to Geelong's Mark Blake that, financially, is likely to be beyond the premiers to match.

Blake is yet to decide if he will leave behind the disappointment of his 11th-hour omission from the premiership team for a new start but the Saints signalled their intention yesterday to make that decision easier rather than harder with their offer, which is understood to be in excess of $800,000 over the three years.

"Like a lot of clubs we're looking to bolster our ruck division. With a young ruckman like Mark Blake considering his future, we're putting St Kilda at the forefront," said football operations manager, Ken Sheldon.

The Cats told clubs on the opening day of trading yesterday that Blake is required at Geelong — as is midfielder Brent Prismall — and did not raise the option of moving Steven King on to ease Blake's concerns about again playing third banana to Brad Ottens and the man who replaced him in the grand final 22.

The Saints are less interested in King who, at 28, is six years older than Blake, but the former captain is likely to be the player the Cats release if one has to go — especially if money has to be found to improve Blake's offer against the salary cap pressure that will inevitably increase as the club seeks to hold its premiership list together.

Whether the Saints, who also have an interest in Melbourne's Chris Johnson, are prepared to go as far as offering their first-round selection (pick nine) to Geelong for Blake was unclear last night but they were conceding that they will need to trade given the interest from Richmond, among others, in the follower.

The Tigers, with first pick in the pre-season draft, have another option available to them. Richmond's director of football, Greg Miller, met Blake's agent Anthony McConville yesterday afternoon.

The Cats indicated yesterday that they are prepared to discuss Charlie Gardiner, Henry Playfair and Kane Tenace and have all but agreed to release Tim Callan to the Western Bulldogs for a late-round pick, but Geelong would not budge on Prismall despite interest from Essendon and Melbourne.

------------------------------------------------------
Pretty bad that they've offered him more than us, looks like either him or King has to go to make room for the other. Sad to think they most likely won't play in the same team again.

Thats the bit I cant understand, its not as if it was Marks last chance at the big time or anything - its his first year of senior football for christs sake.

So we have Rod in the ear of Mark and Ricky Nixon in the ear of Steven King. If we are not careful we could lose both of them because they are getting selfish advice from people that only care about their wallet and not team sports......... I'll hold my breath until the end of the week.....

Spot on - if he looked at the Prelim he'd know why he was dropped. I am getting over the Blakes - if St Kilda are offering as much as they say I'd be taking it.

Pick 7 is a fair reward I think. If blake decides to go then that's the way it is. West will have to accelerate his development if that happens though because King cannot be guaranteed to stay on the park.

I had enough of these cry-babies. Surely his father, an ex-Geelong player would be happy that we broke the drought and that his son contributed to getting us there (not in the GF, but Egan didn't play in the GF and does that mean he didn't contribute?). Someone need to tell these guys its not the coaching staff's fault that Mark was played terribly in a final and scared Thompson into dropping him.

well at least it's good to hear that the club aren't keen in getting rid of Pris.

If blake goes it'll be a bit disappointing but as SS has said it'll mean West will have to step up and at least he can kick the ball.

if we get pick 7 for blake I would be as happy as a pig in mud

if we make the gf next year can we also drop another average player so the media beat him up for two weeks to increase his value.

I think some of you need to look at traded more objectively. If we were getting a ruckman from St Kilda who hadn't really developed into anything special yet would WE offer pick 7? Pigs arse we would. Top 10 picks are sacred unless you're Judd.

Not to be too cynical about this, but I would not be surprised if Rod has been quoted out of context on this. I do not know Rod at all, but I am aware how the media works & how they can turn an innocent remark into a raging headline that has nothing to do with the truth.

All this makes good copy; the other part of the story in the paper was that Mark will stay - seems like they are having a bit each way & then claim later that they broke the story first!

Maybe so,but we're taking about StKilda who haven't got a Ruckman.
Clarke has retired.
Gardiner hasn't been able to get on the park for 2yrs.
Rix is a Vfl quality player
Brooks is a dud.
Kozi is needed in the forward line especially now that Gehrig has gone.
That makes Blake worth his 100kgs weight worth pick 7.

Re: Saints off Blake contract

Actually it's pick 9, apologies for leading you all astray.

Blake is an emerging ruckman, he has had an outstanding season and at his age has a lot of improvement in him. StKilda need ruckmen now and I personally think in what has been touted as a weak draft that pick 9 is fair reward for a ruckman that has proven his potential, but then again no doubt saints fans would disagree.

It really suprises me as well that the dogs or hawks have not chased playfair, sure his disposal is shot but he makes a decent tall defender and would go very cheap. (I actually think we should hang onto him).

Re: The Official Mark Blake thread

Yet this is all coming from the Media and Rod. Yet to hear anything from Mark himself. If Kingy breaks down at the start of next season, we'll be in a spot of bother.

At last a voice of reason, Blake played twenty two games this year, the most improved player at the club who has come on in leaps and bounds from last year, gets dumped on the eve of the Grand final and is understandably upset, but from what I've heard hasn't opened his mouth, bagged the administration or said he'll be leaving, yet many "supporters" haven't stopped sticking the boots into him without first finding out exactly what his intentions are.

How about worrying less about what his Mom or Dad have to say and waiting to hear what Mark himself thinks before rushing to judgement.

Agree totally.

While Pick 7 for Blake is a pretty sweet deal, he's becoming a gun ruck and as Danny Frawley said, injuries to ruckmen are not a question of if but when. At the end of last season most thought he was the new Peter Street, would take a hitout and then be bloody useless. This season he's put on nearly half again his average hitouts (17.1 from 12.1, 11th in the competition), increased his disposal level (and skill), kicked some goals and even picked up Brownlow votes. He'll never be Dean Cox but I think we'd have to be looking at a very, very good deal for us to trade him.

Was quoted in one of the papers "will give his answer before he leaves on his end of season trip" which is today.
IMO his silence says it all!! :(

Yeah it sounds okay on the face of it but like yourself I wouldn't be looking to trade Blake off, as you point out his his improvement has been remarkable and we all know how long it takes young ruckmen to develop, he continues to improve next year as he should and we'll have a very decent player on our hands for quite a few years to come.

If it came down to it, and again this is all just speculation like nearly everything connected to the kid, I'd prefer to move King on before losing Blake, ten years as against one, possibly two seems like a no brainer decision to me, but who knows, we may keep them both as neither have given any indication they want to leave as far as I know, and that's what gets me riled, just wish people would wait for the facts before commenting.

Silence by Law is assumed to be in the negative.
Why would StKilda offer him a three year contract if he wanted to stay? Imo he is trying to force the club into making a decision b/w King and himself.

Blake staying at Geelong

Blake wants to stay, Geelong want him to stay so it looks like he will be staying. St. Kilda could be hurdle though.
