My experience playing with talls in both football and basketball is that if they have slow reflexes and are slow to move it can't be significantly changed through training. That said - if they are slow - then they may as well be 2 feet tall as 9 feet tall. They will never improve. Blake is a perfect example of this, IMO. Watching him organize his body to do things like grabbing the ball, turning around and kicking or handballing it is painful. I got nothing against the fellow, but thats how I see it.

And I don't remember his father being overly slow.

As long as we all don't forget, Blake is a young man in rucking terms, 24 or 25, and his father didn't hit form until 28 and then blitzed. Mark still has lots of upside and does seem to be slowly improving.

Receiving his coach's support widely in the media only to have it withdrawn publicly 2-3 weeks later the way it was on Sat night is a mixed message that will do nothing for his confidence, which is already fragile.

I'd rather that we had him here WHEN and not if he fully develops. Hawthorn would love to get their hands on him according to some people working for the club. I know there will be plenty who will come out and call him a dud, but he isn't.

I don't believe that his father's development is at all relevant. Different person, different game etc. This argument is weak. Improving slowly is the most relevant point. I think Mummy illustrated what development is. Most ruckmen are washed up earlier rather than later.

The coach has given him all the support he can. He is now trying to give him a kick up the bum to see whther that works. I don't think that a coach should hold back just in case he hurts someone's feelings. That is soft.

When is he reaching his pinacle. And what will it look like. And maybe he has reached it already. Looking for blue sky could be a falacy, and cost the club another talent like Mummy.

The Hawks may love him, but will need to trade to get him. I am sure our squad will benefit with the addition of a jordan lewis as well.

People need to judge him on him, and not the progression of his father. If he is too soft, then so be it. But he is not some superstar that deserves so much attention.

I completely agree with that, providing our coaches apply that policy to all our players (i.e. no one is immune from receiving such criticism when it is duly warranted). Consistency is the big thing with this.

As for the Hawks thing, Blake is contracted for 2011 is he? Hope so.

A few things. The Hawks may not love him, but he could be what they need
When did Jamar become the gun that he is this year? Yes, this year.
Why does everybody say Mummy is such a supertalent. Has not done anything earthshattering against us 2x this year. And Blake broke about even with him.
His father is mentioned only because Rod himself believes that Mark is developing at a better rate than he was.
Nobody needs convincing here, we all have opinions, and it's obvious the coaching staff agree with the BF majority regarding Blake, and it's thus likely he'll miss finals this year. Very similar to 07, so if we get a flag out of it and can convince him to stay on, I'll be happy with that.
People object to me never picking us to win, or my negativity, but I'm not rapt abput the constant negative comments directed at Blake, Byrnes, Mackie, Lonergan, Wojo, and to a lesser extent, now, Varcoe. I'm almost convinced some people take pleasure when they do the odd stuffup to justify their opinions. Apart from Lonergan, these are ALL premiership players, and Blake was selected in preference to Mumford last year, so he is NO SPUD. Similarly, I really hope Lonergan gets that opportunity this year. Bet not one critic here on BF has the skill or talent to get anywhere near any 1 of these maligned players.

For me, the most annoying number for Blake - is his jumper number.

I recently went up to get my grandfathers number put on my jumper, number 24.

When I got home and put it on, a mate said - 'hey Blakey', and I realised who's number it was in the current team, I hadn't even realised.

Now I have freakin Mark Blake's number on my back, and believe me I'm not his biggest fan.

Oh well, still a special number for me I suppose.

I am not really fussed about the Hawks, just that they offer over the odds for him.

Why does everybody say Mummy is such a supertalent. Has not done anything earthshattering against us 2x this year. And Blake broke about even with him. If clubs were offered a choice of the two, Mummy would be their pick time and time again. I would say he was the dominant ruckman the other day. No-one is saying he is a super talent, but what application can do.

So he would, so that his boy keeps his spot in the team. As if he is going to say anything negative about his son. Again the game has changed from dinosaur rucks.

In regards to Byrnes and Varcoe they have their moments where they show how good they are, but need this to occur far more frequently.
I'm almost convinced some people take pleasure when they do the odd stuffup to justify their opinions. Apart from Lonergan, these are ALL premiership players, and Blake was selected in preference to Mumford last year, so he is NO SPUD. Blake needs to grasp the opportunity afforded to him. He needs to show that he has taken it on board, and tackle, shephard etc. Similarly, I really hope Lonergan gets that opportunity this year. Bet not one critic here on BF has the skill or talent to get anywhere near any 1 of these maligned players.
This is an internet forum, where one expresses an opinion. If only those that had more ability than current players were allowed to post, there would be very few posts.

You very well know the difference between opinion and ridicule. Even the stuff that gets said about Ablett by some of "us" is appalling. Anyway, all the stuff you said makes complete sense; I just keep going back to that Pies game early this year where Blake and Hawkins dominated and really enjoyed it. Sincerely believe he can play and thought it was going somewhere when he got the coach's support, yet the Crows' game was a shocker. Now that support has reversed and we're going around in circles. Blake out until????

I'm sorry, I didn't relise that Champion data and the Geelong midfielders were the same thing, my mistake
Haven't looked for a link yet but I'm pretty sure Cameron Ling said that Blake's tap work was excellent in an article by Rohan Connolly about Blake in early 09, month or two before he got dropped.

I agree on that (i.e. that that is not the thing supporters should do), but I didn't see any of that in Me's post. In fact I thought everything he said was pretty spot on.

Yeah I noticed last week Bomber said Blake wasn't playing "our way" and wondered what he meant. Is it an attitude thing with him or is he a genuine trier (in areas other than tap rucking) who just isn't good enough??

I suspect the latter rather than the former but only those inside the club would know.

What's interesting, is how he still doesn't seem to be making the changes that they want, and around this time every year ends up in the VFL.

i thought this was interesting:

''We've always told him that if Gary or Corey or Selwood or Bartel are saying maybe he should hit it over there, it's probably a good time to listen, because they're pretty good at the game. We do remind him they also make him look pretty good if he hits it to that general area".
