Hello All,

This is my first time here and it certainly looks like an impressive discussion board. I hangout quite a bit on the World of Rugby League forum, even though I prefer AFL, and I haven't had luck in the past at finding a quality AFL forum to talk on. The Hawthorn official one is okay, but it is slow and sparsely attended, whilst the Australian Football Newsgroup is a clique for longterm posters. Anyhow, on to the topic at hand...

More disastrous news for Saturday night's "blockbuster" at Colonial with James Hird being ruled out and Dustin Fletcher under a cloud. As a Hawthorn "tragic" I can't believe that things are souring so badly for what should have been our biggest
game in a decade.

James Hird is clearly the best footballer in the business at the moment and I always enjoy watching him play, in spite of my unabashed enmity for the Bombers. This also serves to effectively make the game a no win situation for the Hawks and really puts them firmly under the pump.

Kevin Sheedy appears to already be contemplating defeat, which is the only logical spin that I can put on his comments in this morning's paper. He clearly went to great lengths to overstate Essendon's injury woes, ensuring that he'll come off looking like
a legend if the team gets up. His comments on Essendon's brave battle against injury "throughout" the 2001 season did bring a smile to my face all the same. Someone needs to give him a subtle reminder that two weeks may seem like an eternity in football, but for the opening six rounds Essendon was barely short of full strength (Misiti being the noteable exception). They're certainly doing it tough right now, but given the brilliant run they had last year they're clearly ahead on the ledger.

I really wanted them to be a lot closer to full strength for Saturday though, bugger it!

Oh well, we'll play the cards as they're dealt to us,
Kevin

IF ONLY PEOPLE COULD RETURN THEIR TICKETS FOR THE GAME AND ONLY 40000 ROCK UP IT WOULD BE THE BEST OUTCOME. ESSENCRUD AND CH7 WOULD BE PRETTY ********ED AND IT WOULD BE JUSTICE FOR THEIR PATHETIC ATTITUTE TOWARDS HAWTHORN FC AND THEIR SUPPORTERS!! AS I CALLED FOR EARLIER HAWK FANS IN MELB SHOULD BOYCOTT THE GAME ENTIRELY AND ROCK UP TO WAVERLEY OR SOMETHING AND START RIOTS. WHY GIVE ESSENCRUD ANYTHING- EXCEPT A GOOD OLD PUMMELING ON THE SCOREBOARD!!!

Cheers... I've heard about Dunstall_19, but I didn't believe it. Oh well, he's not hurting anyone and he seems to have genuine passion for the game. Can't say that I agree with all of his sentiments though, Hawthorn supporter or otherwise.

There's little doubt Essendon had a tough run in '97 with injuries, but their 98-99 wouldn't have been any worse than several other clubs. Its something you have to grimace and bear (alas) and while supporters invariably get plenty of mileage out of a bad injury spell, coaches generally refrain from making too big a deal out of it. Mind you, Sheedy doesn't generally behave like other coaches in regard to these sorts of things.

I think, therefore I might be...

CyberKev,

If you want to go a good Hawthorn site and you don't like the official one, give this one a go:

www.elevenoclock.com/forums/hawkheadquarters

Dunno if you've seen it already, but it is a pretty good one.

The worst angle I can find for the Essendon injuries this weekend is that if we do get done by them, we are a long, long way short of being a contender. I don't know how you can equate Hay, Rawlings and Holland missing as opposed to the 8 Essendon guys, but a fit Hird always goes well against us and his injury should give us a leg up.

I'm hoping for a good showing. That's as good as I'll offer at this stage.
