Bloods may tackle Giants

GREATER Western Sydney coach Kevin Sheedy wants his club to play its first game outside NSW against West Adelaide under lights at Richmond.

Sheedy said a pre-season trial match between his Giants and the Bloods could draw a crowd of up to 10,000 and would benefit both clubs.

The Giants are scheduled to play trials in Canberra and Albury but could visit the Bloods before SANFL trials begin on March 12.

``There's one (Giants' trial) swinging at the moment and if that doesn't come through then hopefully we might get to Adelaide and play West Adelaide,'' he said.

``I'd love to see that on a Friday night here . . . If it's a possibility we'd love to get something like that done.''

Sheedy is good friends with former West president and current SANFL commissioner David Shipway and the pair discussed the idea at a speaking engagement late last year.

Bloods president Paul Sperling said he was yet to discuss the suggestion with coach Andrew Collins or chief executive Kym Russell but believed they would be open to the idea.

Both the Giants and Bloods have entered in the 16-team second-tier cup competition that will be played this winter. But they are on opposite sides of the draw and would only meet if both made the final.

Meantime, Sheedy said he was hoping to gain the services of former Central District captain and 200-gamer Peter Krieg at GWS.

``He might come and work with us off field on match days,'' Sheedy said.

would be a good experience for you guys.

It would be a great experience for our players. Especially at that stage of the pre-season - after a few weeks where GWS's young list will have played AFL lists, moving on to playing a SANFL team may be a welcome change of pace before the NEAFL season starts.

But I can't see it happening. The AFL would be keen to ensure the Giants have a NAB Challenge game against an AFL club that weekend (unless GWS makes it past the Swans and Gold Coast into the knockout stage of the NAB Cup), otherwise one of the other AFL clubs would miss out on a NAB Challenge game.
