Hey you dont have to convince me I agree!
In actual fact I cringe about that whole draft looking at it again...
2004 draft...
9. Russell
25. Hartlett
41. Blackwell (f/s)
73. Bryan
77. Raso

what upsets me is in the 2002 draft where we lost our first 2 pick we still ended up drafting better than 2004

Hypocrite.
3. I don't think I've ever said Russell was better than Houlihan,

4. Carrazzo won our B & F last year, so finishing fourth isn't much to write home about in a year when we've sacked our coach and nearly won a third spoon.

Houlihan and Russell aren't even in the same league but if you seriously think they're comparable you're kidding yourself as usual. It tool houla all of half a season to establish himself as a walk up start in a team that played in a Preliminary Final and he was a pick 73. Russell is in his 4th season and if all or most of our players were available as in Round 1 would not get a game in a struggling side. He did not deserve to be promoted on his Bullants form and only remains in the team because of our growing number of injuries. He is clearly being given a final opportunity to prove if he is worth the first round pick we wasted on him. If he were a pick 73 he would have been delisted long ago. Houla had to earn his spot on merit.

Oh and Houlihan had 142 B&F votes last year to Russell's 6 despite struggling with a hip injury requiring injections all year. What's Russell's excuse? They don't call off the B&F just because the coach was sacked or we finished 15th. Anyone can play well in a good side surrounded by good players. It's a lot harder to stand up in a struggling side but trust you to try to turn everything around to suit yourself. And if you think I care about your opinion I don't. The MATCH COMMITTEE recognize the players who contributed and completed their assigned tasks. Your opinion is worthless. We saw that with your ridiculous claim he was about to be dropped when he had a serious injury that required surgery and a long absence from playing.

Anyway why do you constantly bring up Houlihan when he has not even played lately and we are discussing Russell? You can't blame him for yesterday's loss. Pity the same can't be said about your Russell. Are you incapable of following instructions and sticking to the topic? Or are you trying to avoid discussion of Russell? You are nothing but a troll and a miserable 'supporter'.

If you don't understand the meaning of the word Hypocrite you can forget it. I've had enough of wasting my time trying to explain it to you. You clearly have no idea about anything and can't even see your hypocrisy. Find someone else to fight with. It's all you're good at.

Well said... once I brought up hard, clear line facts about Russells game, including the 68% efficiency and the 5 clangers not to mention the momentum swinging kick into the man on the mark he decides to go and dig up a comment I make on the Essendon board relating to Ricky Dyson. Dyson is on about par with Russell in terms of showing and following through on potential and he went pick 44 and that was in a draft that included Cooney, Stanton, Walker, Ray, McLean, Buchanan, Shaw and S.Fisher...

And just because I go off and rate another footballer at another club so what... Russell was a waste of a pick however in such a weak draft I'm not that upset... i upset that he is getting game time over some other players such as jackson, armfield and even the o'hailpin's... an insipid performance on friday night should see him banished to the VFL to work on his skills, and hopefully if them send him back they play him in the guts so he is near the ball not in an obscure back pocket or something!

Was a lot better than I thought he would be.

Tackled well, handballed well marked decently.

His kicking especially at goal was his only poor aspect. But he's not baggable in any sense.

Thought Russells lead up marking today was exceptional. When we were on fire in the first half he had a lot to do with it, but don't let the facts get in the way of a good bagging. Some of his disposal was ordinary particularly that kick into the man on the mark but to me he adds value to the team on the hff with his pace, leading and marking and if he can just finish it off a bit better which will come with confidence we have a pretty good player on our hands. In comparison to say Carrazzo who I thinks offers little value. What he does others can do, ie get 20 possessions and turnover 10 and bomb the rest into the forwardline. Russell did not cost us the game it was the turnovers leading up to that in uncontested situations by players who really dont add value that cost us. Oh and by the way its the second week in a row I've heard the coach praise him. He has done the job asked of him again.

I reckon Jordan has been ok for the last couple of games. Seems to have lifted his intensity and attack on the ball, confidence is up and tackles are sticking. Apart from his kicking which is still shithouse, seems to be improving.

Its just frustrating the wat he turns the ball over after we bust our guts to get it. Not acceptable from such a highly rated player when drafted.

I agree. He does undo a lot of good work done by teammates further down the field which really does let the whole sidedown. His kicking looks like a confidence/decision making related problem rather than flawed technique or lack of skill. Hopefully he can get his head right and the rest will fall in to place. I think the coaches realise that once the penny drops we could actually have a decent player on our hands.

I think it mainly confidence. Seems to make the mistakes when he is under the least pressure...bit like Bannister used to. However, when he has no time and reacts instinctively, he seems to dispose of it pretty well and make better decisions.
If it is a confidence issue, he has all the tools to be a good player. He's big, fast and from all reports has a pretty good kick when he's not cacking his dacks. He did some pretty surprising things in traffic on the weekend (handballs/bullocking work) which I was suprised by and gives me hope.

Give him a chance...I think he must be showing some pretty impressive talent in training for Ratten to persist with him like he has (his first couple of games this year were crap)...maybe a few more games and some confidence and he will come along like Bower has.

EDIT: Sorry 112, just read post...basically repeating

GIVE HIM A CHANCE????? Are you kidding. Are people watching the same game as me out there or what? His turnovers along with Carrazoare so costly which has also swung our momentum numerous time. How many more goals does he have to cost us before we dump him. I pretty sure the only reason he gets a game is that he was taken at # 9. Ive had enough and would rather give Armfield or any other young player a crack.

The coaching staff have a good understanding of each players strengths and weaknesses...so they must think Russell has larger upside than a speedy, tough but unskillful Armfield or all the rest of the younger kids...I think given his game last week, the experiment with Russell deserves a couple more weeks.

so russell becomes a second ruckman out there... can mark and handball but not kick... not what you want from a 185ish mid field pick #9...:p

As frustrating as some of the things Russell did on Saturday were I think he is on the improve.
he laid some great tackles and was the go to man coming out of defence often - ran hard to space to take heaps of uncontested marks.
His delivery is not great - shocking mistake to kick into man on the mark when a goal would have given given us some great momentum
Think he needs to be persevered with

Armfield hits targets with approx. one in seven kicks according to one fan who watches training.

So why does everyone want to promote a player who is older than Russell and a poorer kick?

Ditto for Jackson who is slower and unaccountable after Teague gave him a huge bake yesterday.

People just keep getting dumber and more reactionary by the week.

If it's new, it must be better.
