I really don't understand this, and have a hard time believing people when they say they do a job because they love it and it's rewarding (would you do it for nothing? yeah, nah). My life goal is to find the easiest job with the highest paying rate.

Obviously there's a minimum financial level but suffice to say that financial reward is not the key driver in what kind of employment I seek.

If he was childless, unemployed, taking government handouts, living with his parents and doing SFA then i'd say he's a bludger. He sounds successfull enough and more than happy. Some people don't need to be constantly challenging themselves.

Like me. Stress less, live longer. :thumbsu:

I couldn't get through life if I had too much free time on my hands. I feel at my best when at Uni, because I know I'm striving to earn a decent living with a good career. I stress as much as anybody, but get through knowing there is something good of it to come later on. Over Summer, I have a part time job, which I love, but I still have far too much time on my hands than I need. Not to say I don't enjoy the time off, I just feel it could be better spent at times doing something worthwhile.

This isn't supposed to be offensive, so don't take it that way, but you sound like someone who hasn't been involved extensively in the working industry. Are you still at school, out of interest? Personally, i'm very new to the workforce; i'm 19 and working full time in my gap year. My job is very easy, and pays pretty well (For my age). Is it tolerable? Yes. Could I tolerate it for my whole life? No.

The crux is, you spend such a large portion of your life at work, you need to find the right balance between enjoyment and salary. As a 17 year old, I had aspirations to work in Sports Management; You know the drill, work my way up from your standard office job to being the CEO of a Sporting Organisation. However, having worked in one for 9 months, its not what I had envisioned. So, instead of chasing a higher salary at the consequence of monotonous hours spent in the office, i've decided to do something more rewarding. I'm gonna teach. The pay in comparison will be lower, but you can't put a price on your enjoyment in the workforce.

9 in 10 teacher's are knobs with control issues, and are generally PC natzis. You can always tell a teacher outside of school. Just don't be one of them. :thumbsu:

This :thumbsu:

I basically chose my career when way back in year 10 I looked through the paper to see what professional jobs paid the most.

My goal now is to set up my finances so that I have enough residual income to pay for my living.

As soon as that is achieved ... bye bye work. I have no interest in it what so ever.

If you think your mate is a bludger then you have pretty much branded 90% of the population bludgers.

Holding a steady job, raising a couple of kids and heading to asia once a year for a holiday is pretty much what the majority of the adult population of Australia do.

Yep. With ambition comes responsibility. Do not want.

I don't need a 2nd job though, the one I have currently pays very well, up to 20 bucks an hour this season, which is more than enough at my age.

The difference is the majority of the adult population of Australia are cretins, and my mate is not.

I'm sometimes feel gulity when I think about how I don't work that hard, spend alot of time on BF and generally do not care about school yet still manage to be my parents golden child. (srs)

My sister tries harder than me, helps around the house and does everyting asked of her but she can never get the same level of marks or as good report cards as me.

feelsguilityman.

Things changed maybe you have peaked:p

Anyway at the moment I can honestly say in the last 2 years I have really gone through the motions and really havent applied myself. I am at uni and dont really work that hard at it.

But I have to say taking it easier in the last 2 years I have pushed myself out of my comfort zone by backpacking by myself for 3 months, worked a couple of short term tricky jobs and pushed myself socially (wasnt the best socially before).

Its good to have a transition period and I'm looking forward to applying myself next year and hopefully do something exciting like travelling to south america.

Believe it or not, money isn't actually what drives us in life and likewise isnt the motivator people think it is.

There's 3 factors which lead to better performance and personal satisfaction.
Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose. Autonomy allows us to be self directed, Mastery; being the best at something and money whilst being good isn't any good once cognitive skill is involved. When the profit motive becomes bigger than purpose motive, people dont perform to the same standard.

I always found it sad when people who finished with TER scores over 97% they were automatically expected to be entering law or medecine.

Great point.:thumbsu: I know a few people from high school who got TER's over 97, but decided money wasn't the sole factor in a career choice, and are on far less pay than they otherwise could be in the future. I was one to get over 97, but I'm happily doing an engineering course which I wouldn't change. It may not be everyone's cup of tea however, which is fine.
