Has anybody watched this?

It was made nearly 10 years ago but was banned in NSW up until a few years ago due to the trial of Neddy Smith and his involvement in the murder of a truck driver which is depicted in the movie.

I thought apart from some production glitches and discrepancies (i.e 1976 comes up on the screen which shows Neddy doing some bad stuff on a public street and a brand new commodore drives past and other things)
it was a pretty accurate depiction of the dodgy dealing of the NSW Police force in the 70's and 80's.

Some strong performances from Garry Sweet playing Christopher Dale Flannery and Tony Martin as Neddy Smith. Richard Roxburgh also plays Roger Rogerson really well.

Just wondering if anybody else has seen it and if not do yourself a favour and grab a copy on DVD.

Yeah i think so too, so much so i am buying a copy this week to own it. I am fascinated by the dealings of crims and cops in Sydney throughout the 70's and 80's.

I have been in the room where Neddy, Roger, Chris and someone else go crazy shooting at the wall and and at wooden boxes. You can still see 100's of bullet holes on the wall. The old Iron Duke hotel in Alexandria. Neddys old HQ.

ps where do you get it from and how much?

I also liked The Great Bookie Robbery which was on TV circa 1980. I was pretty young at the time and always wanted to see it again to see if it really was any good but they never put it on TV again.

Yeah the great bookie robbery was a good movie and I too watched it as a kid. It has the dad from Hey Dad playing one of the crims.

Video store Bunsen. I got it from Civic. It's a 2 part series.

Also finished reading a book called "Killing Juanita" which also deals with the corrupt Darlinghurst cops and the greedy property developers of the 1970's and their run ins with squaters who were opposed to the redevelopment of Victoria St in kings Cross. One of the activist was a lady called Juanita Nielson who was heir to the FOYS empire and lived in Victoria St. She was shot and killed inside the old "Les Girls" club which is now The Empire Hotel in the cross.

Dam Melbourne has all the fun these days!!

Great movie / series.

Melbourne has bullet holes too! In trades hall in Carlton there's still holes in the wall of the stairwell from when Squizzy Taylor fled there to escape the cops. Or something like that.

top movie. I have seen it a number of times.
What he said. In a sense (about police corruption) timeless.

Gun performances from Richard Roxburgh, Tony Martin, Steve Bastoni, Marcus Graham & Alex Dimitrades.

You can always do what a mate does at blokes BBQs: have some sort of loop of Blue Murder, Two Hands and Chopper going.

And note how all the bad guys drive Falcons.....

Yeah forgot to mention other lead roles played by those guys. Also Peter Phelps as Aboe Henry.

haha true!! Except for one scene when they chase some crims in a torana but the falcon catches up to it and smashes it to bits. ;)

BTW has anyone ever dealt with someone connected to any of the characters or any Syd/Melb heavy?

I used to buy my stuff from this guy in Newtown who claimed to be Warren Lanfranchis (played by Alex Dimitrades) mate and the story he told me of warren and neddy were ****en unbelivable. He really was a loose cannon and hence why the dodge shot him.

I loved it. The ABC have done some really good stuff. Did you ever see Phoenix or Janus? If not you should try to get a copy of them.

Great movie, I watched a bit of it (the part of the boat, when they threw the lawyer overboard with a oven tied to his legs) when it was first shown on TV a decade ago. I brought the DVD for my brother a few years ago (2001 I think) as he loves movies about police. The movie is a vertual who-whos of Australian actors and each plays their part perfectly.

I'm with FF, if you don't have it, get it. Just a pity the DVD doesn't have any good extras to go with it.

Yeah it lacks extras like maybe some archived footage or Ray Martins real interview (although it was cleverly edited in the movie which was actually the real interview from 60 minutes crossed edited with actress playing Sally-Ann) with Sally-Anne and also a doco Mike Willesee made a year after Warren was murdered that was shown on tv a few years ago.

I have read around that the dodge denies the whole thing and thinks the movie has made him out to be myth. Also lays some slack on Neddy Smith...tough when the guy is behind bars and has Alzheimer's. But i wouldn't trust this old bastard one bit. He was touring with Mark "Jacko" Jackson at the end of last year doing stand up.

Do I know you???

I grew up in Richmond and knew a few shady characters. I scan the death notices everytime a gangster dies to see how many people I know who have put in notices.

He did an interview for Sky News's In the First Person late last year and basically said the same thing. Though with the stuff he is reported to have done in the movie and never getting charged with it, he is hardly going to come out and say "Yep, everything in the movie is true"

Even if what happened in the movie wasn't true, its still a bloody great movie.
